On entering the car park the first impression is that it's a bit of a dump. Old fridges and freezers abandoned here and there, and also various other junk ( old broken furniture etc) lying around. It looked like a bunch of pikeys had just moved out. Inside is also a bit scruffy, and in need of a good clean and a new coat of paint. But it was busy on a lunch time session and the quality and choice of ales just fine. Service was efficient and friendly . We didn't eat but food looked good (if just a bit pricey)

Very friendly (staff and locals !) , good beer and they have really got it together with the food. We have been over for Sunday lunch a few times now and the food is excellent value.

A regular road side pub, perfectly usable and no doubt ideal for those living nearby. A good selection of ales on offer, no issues there, but hardly a destination pub

Good local pub with good range of beers and honest food. It has also got the balance between boozing and eating just about right (not too many laid up tables in the bar)...

Scottishgirldownsouth is another one hit wonder; publican or staff masquerading as a member of the public. Perhaps she should go back up north, too many scots down south anyway. roll on devolution

We came here on a weekend break in October last year after eating elsewhere (unfortunately) and immediately realised our error. Stayed for a drink - local Cider and a beautiful glass of Merlot and vowed to return if ever in the area. We did just that this Sunday, which was Mothers' Day - my husband had booked a table for us prior to our arrival. There was a tiny hitch with the table but, oh my, did the amazing Sunday dinner and service make up for a tiny error. Our two young children were perfectly catered for and all the food was actually amazing!!!! Today there was a folk band playing and they were a lovely addition to a great afternoon. The kind of place where the locals don't look annoyed at outsiders and the amazing range of ciders, beers and wines make the pub a lovely place to spend some time. To be honest would have loved to have stayed in King Alfred for hours but the kids had other ideas.

Visited on a hot midday in May after sitting on top of Burrow Mump and taking in the view. Friendly staff and nice decor inside - lots of stripped wood (looked like this was an ongoing project). Interesting food menu; good mix of ales. Highlight was a pint of straw-pressed local cider on the beer terrace, overlooking the church next door. Great pub in an idyllic location. Would've liked to stay all afternoon.

They have live music on Sundays, I've been along a few times and it's a lot of fun. The beer is well kept, there's proper cider from just up the road and I understand they've expanded the restaurant to upstairs to cater for the increase in demand. It's good to see the place turned around.

I'm a local so I can tell you it's about to change hands (Tues 7th Oct is the changeover).. The previous owners lost interest in the place a couple of years back and wanted out, so chopin's observation of it seeming run down are fair. Despite having a good kitchen they weren't really interested in pushing food and they fell out with a few locals over the years which left the place virtually empty. Exceptions were some good Sunday afternoons and live music nights. I'm sure they're relieved to be moving on.
The locals are all very excited about the changeover and old locals are itching to get back to the place. Jim and Sal are the new leaseholders and we're all confident they have what it takes to turn the place around. Sal has a good catering pedigree and Jim is a big personality and lot sof fun and as well as a beer and cider conossieur..
So expect good food, a good selection of beers (including 3 real ales) and ciders plus a great atmosphere.. Happy Days!

O.K. for a quick one. kind of run down feel to it which is symptomatic of this whole area really.

Convenient to the mump, with some ales on tap. The landlady and locals are friendly enough. Worth stopping for.
