Still the best Sheringham pub..
|
Probably my favourite Sheringham pub... a bar to the right, with a lounge with open fire to left. It may not appear initially wow, but trust me, the amount of locals, beer and food quality will win over.. staff are attentive, food is great (and large), and evenings are a pleasure to spend here,in a real pub. Beers during Jan 2019 were the usual Doom bar and Abbot, but also a stargazer IPA and wherry. The Sheringham shantymen sing here, and there are always talkative locals..

Actually, sorry, I think I may be confusing The Lobster with The Robin Hood by way of 'outrageous prices'! :-)

I had few beers in here whilst in Sheringham over the last 10 days or so, & the Abbot was pretty good. The real log fire was excellent, & actually did radiate heat outwards; unlike most, when the heat goes straight up the chimney! However, looking at the menu, there were some truly outrageous prices- eg £19.95 for mixed grill; cf Wetherspoons!- for what should be basic pub grub? I haven't eaten there recently, but did have a very good crab thermidor some years ago; paid for by my brother, so I can't say how much that cost! The place was virtually dead in terms of customers mid-afternoon, which pleased me, & was a nice change from the heaving London pubs to which I am most used!

The ales listed on a board outside the pub did not reflect the beers on the ten hand pumps inside. Five beers were on two hand pumps each, dispensing Abbot, Otter, Wherry and a couple of Adnams.
|
Called in once, during a week in Sheringham. Only half the beers on an A-board outside were actually on. Had a pint of Wherry. It was warm and (I suspect) had been in the pipes since at least the last session: stale! It really disappoints me when landlords don't care enough about the quality of the beer they serve to pull off a pint at the start of a session. Retired, hurt, to the Windham Arms.

Feb 2011 - Not sure about 10 ales but certainly a good selection. They also appear to have some interesting whiskey's if that floats your boat. Visited during half term so the "traditional" side of the pub was quite busy with grazing families and their dogs. Unfortunately, the other parts of the pub are not quite as "comfy" so I tended to repair to the Windham.

Cosy seaside pub full of nautical memorabilia. Interesting looking food menu. Real ales available and my pint was in very good condition. Well worth a visit.

Had Sat evening meal there in the saloon bar. Log fire, civilized banter & authentic atmosphere, lovely beer (Wherry, Taylors Landlord), nice food promptly served. My beef & ale stew could have been bigger, but that was the only criticism. Pub has a nice maritime feel without being too full of captain pugwash type tat.

nice little cosy pub in Sheringham that serves a good chip buttie - only thing is the place can be a bit dead at times and you feel you are talking to the room and not just the person you are with!

I cannot understand why the Lobster has currently got such a low rating currently 4.9. I have been in many pubs with much higher BITE ratings, which by comparison have been absolute CRAP compared to the Lobster. In my book 8/10 is much nearer the mark.
OK, it is not perfect, but depending on ones point of view, very few pubs are.
Maybe the previous reviewers visited at the wrong time. Yes, the bar does have 10 hand pumps and when I visited on Saturday 22 August, FIVE beers, Adnams Bitter, Woodfordes Wherry, Landlord, Abbott and Wolfs Golden Jackal were all available. I opted to drink the Wherry which was served in the CORRECT glass, and topped up by the barmaid without me asking her too. I have no complaints at all about the quality of the beer.
We didnt eat here, but the food looked appetizing and I heard numerous positive comments from those who were dining.
As for the lack of choice, there is a beer festival at the Lobster over the August Bank Holiday weekend during which they are advertising that 30 different beers and 6 ciders will be available.

Traditional pub one side and a modern bar in the other. Our group certainly preferred the traditional side of the pub. The beer selection on offer same as Rod Harigo's review below. At least ten hand pumps with most beers doubled up on pump clips. The pub is in the current Woodfordes ale trail so we had that for the stamp. I was most disappointed to receive the Wherry in an Abbott glass like the rest of my group. Two outside seating areas at the front and back of pub. The rear area has its own model railway club run by friendly staff. They had an impressive track and model layout with 3 locomotives in action.

Went in on the first Saturday night of our stay in Sheringham and the offerings were Adnams Bitter and Abbot - that was it. Had an Abbot and it was a nice pint, but you can get that anywhere. (I looked in again later in the week and just the same) I spent the remainder of my beer tokens in the Windham Arms.

Good pub with several seperate areas. Come in the front and turn left you get a traditional style bar - very wooden and with lots of artifacts hanging on the wall and ceiling. Come in the front and turn right and you get a gastro-pub style bar - very modern and metalic. There is a small courtyard out the back which would appear to be the smokers' area and home to a model railway club. On the side on the pub is a large and modern beer garden. Several well kept ales available on our visit: Best and Broadside from Adnams, Abbot from Greede King, Wherry from Woodfordes and Landlord from Tim Taylor. Warm and friendly welcome from the staff and what looked like a good and varied menu although we didn't actually try it.

In line with previous comments a recent visit confirmed that the Lobster is indeed suffering a period of malaise. The beer was okay but choice not as good as previous visits in high season. Service was efficient and quick (albeit on a fairly quiet lunchtime) but food was uninspiring and lacked attention to detail - so as to make it overpriced. Also the pub itself is looking tired and in need of TLC. Action is required to bring the pub back to its former glory.

I enjoyed the Deuchar's IPA on 2 occasions here.I didn't dare to try a different beer as I was confident any change would be a bad move. The beer garden / terrace is good on a sunny day - loads of room, and offers the comedy cabaret which is fairly constant. It consists of waiters shouting out numbers in all directions, doing three laps of the pub before serving 50 worth of cold food to a deaf punter. A good enough reason for me to visit the chip shop for a hot meal.

Id agree with plenums review: the Lobster used to be a great pub, for both food and drink. Its now merely ordinary, for both. It looks really run down inside and out and it needs a revamp: the premises, the menu, the service and the attention to detail.
The beer selection was no better than average, and served warm. Some beers seemed stale to me. The food is overpriced, in my opinion; its nothing exceptional now. It all sounded fantastic on the menu, but was a bit of a disappointment when it arrived.
We enjoyed the Wyndham Arms, a few yards down the road, much more. Better kept beer and some very good food at reasonable prices.

A shame but a pretty dire pub that was very good only two or three years ago the last time I visited. Heaven knows why it has gone down hill so quickly. Trying very hard to be more than it actually is and concentrating on the wrong things.
Overpriced food that they would have you believe is near silver service standard but is very average. The beer is kept very badly and over the course of a week I couldn't even claim it offered an average pint, quality varied wildly. On enquiring got one tall story after another about the reasons for this.
Outside and in the pub looks very tired and needs lots of little things sorting everywhere you look. Seems to be ingrained in the pub that it is some wonderful place offering the best around but it is definitely not. Maybe this belief is why it doesn't seem to be trying anymore?

Some of the Eagles overindulged at the Lobsters beer festival which was excellent. Very pleasant terrace to sit and while away a few hours. Reservations about the restaurant here though (the stables), trying hard with the food but served a couple of less than average dishes, need to concentrate on the little things like making sure the wine glasses are clean, the tables are not sticky and also make repairs to many of the dining chairs.
