user reviews of the Bull, Arborfield

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Despite moving in to Arborfield several months ago and it being at the end of our road, we had not yet visited The Bull due to the 'anti-children' reputation it had.

We wanted to find a pub to have a family Sunday lunch at, and looked at The Bull's website - we were delighted to see that its reputation is out of date, as it has recently changed hands and is now marketed as a 'family friendly' pub with its own children's menu. So, we went for lunch yesterday with our two young children, and some other family members.

We all had a roast, which was absolutely excellent. Not a soggy overcooked vegetable in sight! I had the roast beef, which was so tender and perfectly pink and everybody else said theirs was wonderful as well. The beer/wine was good, the interior was very nicely decorated, and the staff were friendly and polite.

My only criticism of it would be that the rest of the menu is a bit '1980's Harvester', (full of things like stuffed mushrooms, prawn cocktail, scampi, etc) so it could do with a bit of updating as it's rather old fashioned. That said, if the food is as good as the roast we had, it wouldn't put us off too much!

We will definitely be back, and look forward to visiting The Bull again.

Today I had a most enjoyable meal at The Bull Inn Arborfield. the staff are very welcoming and my meal was excellent. I would recommend all to try and would gladly tell my friends about this venue.

The Bull Inn is now under new ownership. And the staff are lovely and really friendly. It is a rare thing to stumble across such a lovely pub by accident. I highly recommend coming to this place. Plus they have free wifi and open at 11am - pop in for a coffee between meetings.

Visited here on 23 September at lunchtime. Pub about half full. Only two cask beers available, Courage Best and 6X. Plumped for the 6X which was fine. Served by a young lady who was very pleasant. Seafood Lasagne was good, Chicken Kiev appeared to be a poussin stuffed with garlic it was so large. Fish and chips up to pub standard. No real complaints at all, especially as we were soaked having walked from Wokingham in the rain !

The Bull is a fantastic food pub and it is great to get such good food that is obviously home-made. It has one of the most extensive pub food menu's in the local area and we are really spoilt for choice whenever we go there. In addition to that they have a weekly specials menu just to add to the choice!

My wife and I try to eat here at least once a week and we always get a friendly and welcoming reception.

No children are allowed inside the pub so whenever we go on a Sunday afternoon it is an all adult affair which is quite welcome with other pubs feeling like a creche sometimes! I have seen families in the summer months using the lovely garden and we have brought friends with young kids to enjoy the garden on occassion during the summer.

It is definitely our pub of choice to bring friends to for evening meals and/or Sunday lunch. If there is a large group of more than about 4 people then I would recommend booking in advance as it is very popular, particularly on a Sunday.

The Sunday Roasts are excellent as they fill the plate up with food with loads of home-made gravy. A lot of other pubs don't like to give you a lot when it comes to a Sunday Roast so its refreshing that they go against the grain and pile the plate up, and there is a smaller option for lighter appetites.

Overall i simply cannot recommend The Bull enough as one of the best home-made food pubs in the Wokingham and Reading area.

We had lovely food at The Bull. It is really nice to have proper home made Food. I had the Steak Pie which had plenty of filling and real pastry on top. My husband had a really nice chicken in a creamy mushroom sauce. The Menu was good with lots of different dishes. The Staff were helpful and there was a nice selection of Wines. We will definitely go again, but I might try one of their lites bites so I can fit in one of their lovely puddings, which looked yummy.

My husband and I went to this pub yesterday evening for a special wedding anniversary meal. The outside of the pub is very attractive, lots of signs with Good Food served here all day Delicious home cooked Food.. Please do not be fooled by the signage and the pleasant exterior to the properly.

When we walked in the pub was pretty much empty, there were a few people sitting in the beer garden, it was a nice day so we decided to eat in the garden. At the bar we were served by a gentleman who found it very hard to give us a smile. We looked at the menu and were surprised by how limited it was. 4 starters and a list of mains, which were not very exciting at all and mainly consisted of chips.

We made our food decision, ordered some drinks and sat in the garden. It was only until we got outside that we realised how dirty our drink glasses were.

Our food arrived in record time .. ! My husband ordered the Lasagne. It was basically a sheet of pasta about a tablespoon of mince with a load of congealed cheese piled on top, which looked as though it had been heated up in the microwave, as it wasnt brown or bubbling and looked incredibly anaemic. With this we also got a salad, which consisted of a couple of slices of cucumbers, a tomato, a bit of coleslaw, a slither of red onion and one lettuce leaf! (No dressing) Very disappointing.

I ordered the local ham with an egg and instead of the chips I opted for vegetables. I was presented with 2 slices of ham (which was actually quite tasty) a cold fried egg, and vegetables, consisting of a tiny amount of carrots, 2 florets of broccoli and 1 floret of cauliflower. The vegetables were cold and were soo over cooked that they were falling off my fork when I was picking them up.

Our meal for 2 of us cost us 30 pounds, a waste of money.

All the food is apparently local hmmmm, not a good advert for buying locally!

They serve better food at my works canteen! DO NOT eat here, you have been warned.

Recently refurbished, can still smell the woodwork.

Has three ales on - fairly mainstream choices (6X, Broadside and Courage Best if I recall). Served OK.

Quite big and light inside, obviously looking for some diners. No-one there when I went in with my mate, beyond two other staff - must be struggling a bit as it was a weekday evening, so no atmosphere.

Not as good as the nearby Swan, but better than the Bramshill Hunt. Maybe worth a stop on a busier evening.
