Lively pub with an excellent and wide selection of ales. Enjoyed the Wolf Gold Jackal.
The crib players mentioned in the 2013 review were still there!

Somehow we saved the best pub until last again on our 11 pub crawl of Norwich. This is a fantastic little pub situated next to the river. There was a good selection of ales and ciders - Lacons Saint Nick's, Adnams Ghost Ship, Partners Stout & About, Moon Gazer Winter Porter, Orkney Northern Light, Woodfordes Wherry, Sharps Doom Bar, Wolf For Fox Sake & Golden Jackal, Farmer Jims Dry & Kingfisher Farm Cider. We decided to finish with two halves. But I very nearly ended up with 2 pints. Whilst I could have happily stayed for more, we had a train to catch. I need to make a note to try this pub much earlier in the day next time. As it's worth spending a lot longer here. Norwich is a great city for pubs and whilst we didn't get to the Fat Cat on this visit, the Ribs of Beef did almost make up for it.

Good pub on the bridge opposite The Mischief. Good beer selction. Ideal place to start a trip up Magdalen Street to The Kings Head and The Plasterers. Give them all a visit.
Very good pub indeed. 9 cask ales available, pleasant location by the river. Shame they don't do food in an evening and the wifi wasn't working but that's me being a bit picky I suppose! Overall, well worth a visit, by far the best pub I've come across in that part of Norwich.

A gem of a pub. I visited it for the first time last week and it was so good we returned today (I live in Herts). Worth travelling for.
Really difficult not to give this excellent pub 10/10.
Visited today for lunch with a lady friend. As suggested by other contributors, a very comfortable pub in a great location (a pity the sun was not shining or we might have been tempted to sit outside on terrace).
Tried the Wolf Gold Jackal and the Hare and Hedgehog, both in good condition.
The food was of a very high quality, I had the Beef Stew, my partner the Salmon Fishcakes.
Beer and food served by two very attentive barmaids.
A near perfect afternoon was topped off with a couple of hands of crib with two regulars. I would probably still be there now if I didn't have a train to catch.
I will certainly return.

Probably the most comfortable pub in Norwich - soft carpeted floor and push-button seating, subtle music - could stay here all afternoon - in the end came here twice. 8 ales on tap with emphasis on local brews especially Wolf - tried the Wolf in Sheep's clothing at £2.75/pint and a pint of Brewers Progress Premium bitter on my first visit. Menu looks good but too late when I arrived after 8pm during the week. Good location by the river.

Always visited the ribs when visiting norwich. I moved to norwich 4 years ago and the ribs has and will always be one of my favourite locals. It is in a lovely location by the river (great to sit on the jetty in the summer) offering great choice and quality real ale (9 handpumps) supporting local breweries Wolf Golden Jackal only £2.40 a pint excellent value, the ribs also boasts a fine selection of wines, spirits and lager. The food is locally sourced and reasonably priced. The scotch eggs are homemade and are amazing!! The pub is run by an enthusactic landlord & landlady in roger & anthea who have been in charge for over 25 years, who have a great set of staff and regulars. Definatly a city local that deserves to be a good beer guide regular! Well worth a visit.

Had not been in here for many years, but it still seems a perfectly good place for a beer, with what struck me a good choice of ales. Took the opportunity for a pint of Adnams Diamond Ale as it seemed topical, and it was very enjoyable. The price for two drinks seemed rather high, but the lager was the real culprit (2.20 for a half of Heineken) and I have to say that the recent succession of price increase in pubs seems pretty general and will surely lead to many more closures in the next few months and years.
Often pop in for a midweek beverage or 3. Great selection of spirits, nice location.
Surprised at all the very positive reviews. When I went a couple of nights ago it was all quite average. Eight ales which is good to see though the only slightly interesting one beyond the usual Woodfordes etc was Wolf and that tasted past its time. Very little warmth considering it was so quiet. Will try again but not going to rush back

We were confronted by a barrage of televisions screening "The Football", from every nook and cranny. It appeared more of a social club for tv addicts rather than a pub. So we crossed the road to the bar opposite: comfy seats, mixed crowd and no compulsory telly. Thank God for Wetherspoon when in Norwich.
Excellent beer, nice town pub. Our first stop on a Norwich crawl, and we stayed for a second pint. Enough said!
I had a fine pint of Elgoods Blackdog Mild in here early last Saturday lunchtime, its been a great pub for some time, comfy friendly and with a varied selection of local real ales on tap. Small and cosy riverside terrace for sunny days. Well worth the short walk out of the city centre for a pint (or three)!
this is a crackin pub, quality choice of beer, nice layout inc. small balcony downstairs (luvly for chillin out with a beer by the river), and sky sports. what more cud you want!
What a wonderful little find this was, good beer, good staff, good location. Would definitely revsisit.
excellent pub, great beer , friendly locals and top notch service. Best pub in norwich.
Tried this pub on a Sunday night when they had some live music playing. The music was so so but the beer (Banker's Draft) and service were great. Nice atmosphere.
Popped in Saturday evening before last. Just a 5 mins walk from the cattle market that is Prince of Wales Street. Excellent range of Real Ale, nice clientelle. Nice decor. Nice staff. Nice
I like this pub, its forth going for the location alone, by Fye Bridge on the River Wensum. I nipped in on the way back to the station from the White Lion. Still got a good selction of ales on, and as with so many real ales pubs in Norwich it seems to support local brewers. Worth a look in.
Largish pub in the modern traditional style by the Fye Bridge close to the City Centre.
There's a largish ground level single bar which is comfortably furnished and a smaller downstairs bar - "The Wherry Bar" - which leads to a narrow outside decking area overlooking the river.
The sun had gone in by the time I arrived, but, unfortunately, this outside area appeared to be the only football-free zone in the pub, which was dominated by people watching the Fulham - Liverpool 5.30 pm kick off. This seemed a tad surprising as it had the feel of a pub aimed at the trendy urban professional types and you might have half-expected it to be a football free pub.
There was a good choice of real ales on - Adnams Oyster Stout, Elgoods Black Dog, London Pride, Butcombe Brunel IPA and a beer from Woodfordes.
I'd probably do this one again - but preferably not when there's football on the big screen
This is my favourite pub in Norwich. They usully have a choice of 10 real ales including the excellent ribcracker which is specially brewed for this pub and can't be bought anywhere else. The staff are very friendly and efficient and the food is pretty good too.
Late review from October when we visited for the beer festival. Had a Brains and Woodfordes beer that were OK but not outstanding. Always worth popping in to see what is on offer though.
Quite disappointed with this one, we had a really ropey beer, which we had a big problem to change, having initially to take another from the same cask and then wait an age while the Landlady went to 'check' the cellar. Non of the beers we had that afternoon were in good nick unfortunately though the food wasn't bad. Not a pub we would return to ourselves, but it is very popular so maybe we were unlucky.
Excellent beer range. enthusiastic staff. Sport screens. Wonderful Old Spot Pork Pies. gets busy but isn't that what they're there for??
Popped in for a pint on an saturday afternoon after a visit to the Cathederal. Bit of a way from the town center near to the river. I can imagine that it heaves on a friday and satuday night although it was fairly quiet when we visited.. It has 2 bars and serves food, Menu looks good. I counted 9 hand pumps of Ale plus 1 of cider. Some good ales on offer and seem to be kept well. Bar staff friendly. Will be visiting again to try some more ales.
I see an average of 6.8!. I'd like to see a 10 then. Great pub, good range of well kept beer.
Two storey pub by the river with an outside area downstairs. Served good beer.
great pub, busy, good beer. nice in winter
Yeah decent pub, usually too crowded for my liking but you can hardly blame them for that. Well furnished, clean, ggod range of drinks. Not great but pretty much ok.
A good pub, fine choice of beer and cider. As described: a haven close to a sea of chavvery.
Good range of Ales, but nothing special. The sort of Pub where everyone stares when you walk in (knew I should have worn some Trousers). Nice spot next to the River. Local Cider is served
Beautiful location by the riverside. Clean and tidy. Moderate range of real ales.
Good pub.

At one end of Norwichs Tombeland area you have a little portal to hell: rows of nauseous chav dens (Yates, Spoons, S&Ls I`ll stop before you chuck onto the screen) and seemingly endless legions of buberry uniformed baboons with the collective charm of a sloppy dog turd.
Fortunately as you progress away from the stench of Alco pops and the clutter of fake jewellery, you do finally end up in one of the many havens of beer paradise that Norwich has to offer: embodied in this case by the simply brilliant Ribs of Beer.
It really is a welcome anecdote to the mountains of rubbish less than a mile away: a natural environment with cosy furnishings, long wooden bar, plush carpets, interesting dcor and the unmistakable feeling that no prick with a clipboard has designed the place 60 miles away in a whorish London headquarter. The tap selection, as others have mentioned is first rate even for a place as blessed as Norwich in this area, with a wide variety of well kept ales that changes constantly. And, to cap it off the service is excellent, the clientele faultless and the food (served in a downstairs restaurant room) affordable as well as filling.
Nothing to drag this one down at all, so it has to be a rare 10/10.

Pretty good. I was a tad disappointed with the beer, though. Don't get me wrong, it was good enough, just not as good as I expected it to be. I had been given to expect tip top ales, but none really hit the spot and I ended up drinking Adnams Best, which was the best of about eight different beers on offer. I liked the pub though, just think maybe it had an off night?
Once a year the devoted spouse makes a pilgrimage back to Norwich to visit her uni haunts. I always let her go wandiering by herself so I can end up in the Ribs drinking about 7 halves of great ales and staring out at the river.
This pub has never disappointed.
Excellent pub. Loads of real ale and the staff were friendly. Good mix of locals.
Went on saturday night and it was heaving, seemed a good atmosphere though and a fair selection of real ales

Great pub, great location, love the jetty. Friendly staff, brilliant landlord, excellent beer, what more do you need?
Allways expect a friendly/welcoming atmosphere from the bar staff to the regular clientele. A good selection of real ales (if you're into them) and other drinks, also a diverse lunch-time menu at reasonable prices.

Fantastic pub for lunchtime and evening, especially in the summer when you can enjoy a beer by the river. Always a great atmosphere with friendly regulars and staff and none of the pretentiousness that seems to have crept into many establishments in the city centre. Big screen for sport lovers showing all major televised sporting events. Never had a bad night at the Ribs!
Ned Labbett - 23 Oct 2003 16:54 |
