Good large pub with three ales on, small bites such as black pudding sausage rolls and chorizo scotch eggs available as well as Sunday lunch. Mad Goose on which was nice.

Had a bad experience in this pub tonight. My partner and I got our drinks (they do have some decent beers) and went to find somewhere to sit. It was just after 10 on a Thurs night. The only place to sit in the bar area was near the door where it was obviously going to be cold when the door opened, so we went through to the restaurant area at the back where there were plenty of empty tables. They had stopped serving food and a few people were there finishing their wine after their dinners. It smelt like a fish market so i assume fish was on the menu ! After we sat down one of the staff came in and kind of glared at us. Then a waitress came over and said we had to leave the area because 'they were cleaning up' so we then went back into the bar area and found a free table. When we sat down we found there was a smell of piss obviously because we were sat next to the gents (not good though !) so we then went and stood up at the bar to finish our drinks. When we left it was still only about 10.30. The people in the dining area were still there so there was absolutely no reason why we couldn't have sat there in the first place. The pub clearly doesn't know how to treat customers properly and has a few other issues too so we won't be returning any time soon.

Nice looking pub. Expensive? 4 for a pint of Brakspears Bitter (3.4%) - not great value when you have 2 Wetherspoons pubs 5 minutes walk away.

Some of the latest reviews below seem very negative From my visit on a Sunny Friday evening, it seemed decent enough. The bar area was completely free when I went up, however 3/4 of the pub were sitting out the front enjoying the sunshine The interior feels quite smart and plush for the area, and there is a hatch which shows it serves food. Meet people in here, so worked well enough for that reason. Prices typically expensive. While was a decent visit, this seems the sort of place would have one and move on unless was with a decent sized group

Went here for Sunday lunch on the 30th October 2011.
I prefer their sister pub, The Bull and Last.
Things here are just a bit cramped, the food is average and the beer selection was restricted.

I've lived in Putney for 3 years and the PoW should be our local as its the closest pub to us. We often land up there out of convenience and lack of inspiration but each time I go I kick myself for being stupid.
This joint is expensive, the staff are ALWAYS RUDE, snarky, lazy and look to be sucking lemons. Over the years there have been a couple of bartenders that were friendly and pleasant but they last only a very short time and often speak of appauling management (and worse). It seems management encourage bitter staff.
I went last night as our intended pub was opening late and I swear it will be the last time I ever visit this horrible place. I hate it with a passion. We had one drink (a beer and a cider 8.40) served by a seriously rude and uninterested bar waitress into warm glasses - they've dropped fosters so you can only get 1664 and Red Stripe draft, half the time something is out and they cant be stuffed changing the keg. We left as soon as possible and I will never look back. Go to the Fox (5 pounds for a round), the Coat and Badge or the Jolly Gardener. Anywhere but here.

Pleasant enough place, although it does ge a bit busy and congested in the early evenings when I tend to frequent. The bar is rather small, and usually understaffed, with a chap trying to show off his bottle spinning skills. And, probably because of the rather high prices, so many people seem to pay by card which slows things down even more. The restaurant quality food is very good (we had my department Christmas meal here - 25 of us), and better than much in Putney. ASR

I like this pub. friendly bar staff, good food (not cheap to be fair, but tasty - and home made). Friendly. Like it. Used to be a bit of a dive before the refurb (but funny because they used to stick a big inflatable snowman behind the bar at Christmas). Worth a visit.

This used to be one of our favorite pubs, food used to be good and staff used to care about the customers, now it appears quite the opposite. The food takes a long time to arrive, costs a lot and when once the whole place was packed, these days there's nothing but a few tables occupied in the restaurant. It seems the owners have taken their eye off the ball and it doesn't take long for that to have an impact.

Beer ok, staff nice and friendly, Scotch eggs massive and looked tasty. However 11 for fish and chips served on a wooden board - you're having a laugh. They also need to loose the TV in the corner as it just attracts football/rugby fans into a tiny front bar space. Otherwise not bad.

The slightly Sloane-esque clientele aside, it's not a bad place if you've half an hour to kill - the Black Sheep's well kept and the scotch eggs are tasty. Everything is distinctly on the costly side, and no, I'm not going to add the usual platitude that crops up far too often on this site, "but it is in London so you'd expect that".

This used to be my 'work' local and I miss it! The food is priced high, but represents value for money, as the quality of the ingredients and the way they are used and cooked is exceptional. I agree with the comments previously submitted, ref. there being a requirement for a bit more variety on tap, but I never had any complaints with the Black Sheep etc. Really good wines, especially the Australian Riesling. Most of the staff are friendly, nice feel to the place-lots of nooks and crannies, good buzz & mix of people. Not sure about the last comment inferring the place if full of Sloaney Ponies, never got that feeling whilst in there. Highly recommended.

I it's the best pub near the tube station, which doesn't say all that much. The beer is well looked after, but a guest pint every now again would be nice.
It's a curious mix of people. Outside tends to be more rough and ready, inside hosts people who row (in a boat) and their parents.
Anyway, have a scotch egg, a pint of Black Sheep and enjoy it for what it is.

I live locally so I've been going in quite a lot recently. They have Black Sheep and London Pride on cask which have always been good, as well as a cask cider (Appletons, I think). I wish however that they had some more beers on - Pride can be found everywhere and although the Black Sheep is very good, it would be nice to have a bit more variety.

i hadnt been here for a few years until the other week and have to say what an improvement. while i dont support the loss of a traditional pub over a gastro heres one thats worked. mainly by keeping the two elements seperate. had a good pint of pride in the bar before an excellent meal in the resturant. belly of pork and duck leg both supurb. the only thing i dont like is the shade of green that has taken over most walls, other than that spot on.
|
I found the staff in here to be very pleasant and the pub itself is very inoffensive. The rear of the pub is a dining area, but the front has maintained a pub feel. 4 lagers and Black Sheep plus another ale were on during my visit. There is a plasma screen on the wall along with lots of old tankards that have obviously been collected through the years.
I liked it in here, although the pictures on the front page make it seem far bigger than it actually is.

Like this pub a lot. Good ale on tap, especially the London Pride, the staff are very friendly and I like the decor and the comfy chairs in the middle room. The major negative I have against the place is how expensive the food is. However, I like drinking in here and all in all this is one of the top three pubs in Putney.

Re: Martini's comments - the giveaway seems to be the choice of username 'princeofwalesputney'. It's like 'robertmugabe' recommending hotels in Harare on trip advisor.
I'm going here for the first time tonight; I'll make a more impartial debrief

kinda fancy photos as well, no one usually goes to that much trouble. I liked the old POW, it was a dump, but I knew what I was getting.

Have to agree with Martinl that nearly everybody else on here hasn't written a review for any other pubs.... Looks a bit fishy to me too!
|
Met some friends here on a quiet Wednesday night and despite the nose bleed inducing high chairs everywhere i really enjoyed it.
Partly because they had Black Sheep on tap (yum) although suffering from that typical Southern 'no sparkler on end of tap' problem that leads to flat bitter.
Bar staff were lovely even asking me if I minded having my friend's Fosters served in a London Pride glass (obviously I demanded a discount for this shocking behaviour).
Worth a visit if you can get a seat, wouldn't like to go there on a busy night though.
|
I haven't posted about any other pubs before so martinl probably won't believe what I say, but whatever...
I live in Cambridge, and this pub is a great meeting point for when I go to see my friends in Putney.
The pub is not too loud or trendy to put off people who don't like those things in a pub - whenever I've been there has been a nice mix of people which adds to the atmosphere.
The bar area is very relaxed and the staff are very friendly, and each time I've been the beer and food has been excellent - both in choice and presentation - and not too expensive.
My only criticism would be that more 'bar food' could be offered for those who don't want to eat a full meal in the restaurant.
Unlike so many pubs of this kind (gastro-pub? I don't know what the right word is) the restaurant is separate from the pub proper, although none of the atmosphere is lost when you are in there.
I had a go at the quiz one Sunday evening and (apart from almost missing the last train home) this was one of the better pub quizzes I've done in a while - the prize money isn't too bad either.

Well, well, well it's that old coincidence thang yet again. Every good review for this place has come from a person who has posted on no other pubs at all. Staff? Management? You decide. Yowza.
|
Met up with a friend here without ever having been before. Popped in for one and ended up staying all night. Staff were really friendly, drinks were well priced and the Steak baguette was awesome. Have been back regularly since and recently tried the restaurant menu too which was worth the visit alone. A real find.
|
If there is a more relaxed, quaint example of what exactly a gastro pub should be in London I have yet to find it. Food is delicious and the prices are very reasonable. If you want a pub that also offers a warm atmosphere then I've come across few better unless you have time to head to the cotswolds for a quick pint. I'm not living in Putney but often do meet mates here as it offers all that a pub should. Food, atmosphere and very friendly staff. Was there just before Christmas and was perfect for a few pints and a great roast. Have been there also on a Sunday for quiz night which is a good laugh esp if you feel like giving your brain a workout while sampling a real ale or 6..
|
Well kept beer a very good selection for a small bar. The staff are very friendly and there is a nice atmosphere within the pub too. I was too frightened to go there before but now i see myself becoming a local i will have to try and get my hands on one of those tankards!!

The recently-renovated Prince of Wales joins a long list of Putney pubs to follow the recent trend of offering a bar-dining experience.
They do have some real ales but despite this there is nothing to get too excited about (mainly because there are loads of pubs like this nowadays which offer pretty much the same thing).
Pleasant enough, but safe and unambitious.

If you do nothing else...you have to go to the Prince of Wales, Putney and experience the relaxing, friendly, atmosphere of this great old victorian building. The night we went the resturant was fully booked, but we still managed to down pints of Guiness, a carafe of Beaujolais,Prince of Wales christmas pudding with brandy cream and Irish coffees, all with good cheer! We love our new local.

I went to this Pub today for Lunch, and i have to be honest it was amazing, sundays should always be like this. The place is relaxed and welcoming, the food is a very good take on british cooking. The Potted Goose with Cranberry chutney was delicious, and the sticky date pudding was the best i've had. Considering the layout, decor and the food, i think this is one of the best food pub's that i have been to in London. I hope that it continues to do well.
