It has been a few years since I last wrote a review. Slow recovery from an accident followed by serious (unrelated) illness meant that pints of beer were mainly off the menu. The new me (4 stone lighter) is only meant to drink 1 – 2 pints a day which means I am more critical than ever about beer quality!
Anyway onto the present. It is years since I had been to the Sun as the drunk that ran it more or less banned me when told him off for being rude to friends. So when I heard that new people had taken over I thought it was time to visit again. What a change! When we arrived it was warm and welcoming. And the most important thing about any pub was that my beer was in perfect condition! My partner and her friend were also very happy with their wine (Sauvignon Blanc I think?). The food looked good and we will be coming back for lunch at some stage.
Well done to Stewart and ? for turning things around. Much appreciated!

brilliant night out on a saturday always a good laugh.Food fantastic if you havent tried the fish its a must sunday cavery always good.Staff wonderful been coming here for years wouldnt go anywhere else
From a Cask Marque point of view, we have found the beer to be very good here and not had any problems at all.
Great pub for a night out the landlord can be a bit mental but you need that for adult entertainment and the comments about the old cronnies having there own table so what they enjoy a night out like anyone else the pub is a pricey on the beer and food side but you can not fault the staff for that they are good hard working people love the karaoke as there are some great singers that get up and perform my favourite is the guy that does the elvis songs and the landlady gives a good tune Will be back soon
Agree with previous reviewer - overall a good fun pub with an enthusiastic landlord. Thumbs up! Haven't heard good things about food - so never bothered to try it... One day I will :D
Not the place for a first date - but quite good fun when the landlord is drunk and has a go at his locals, especially on a saturday night! Visit often - well worth a visit if your not offended by F's and C's :)
Hi to all... I have drunk in the Sun for 30 years and having fairly recently been told to drink up and f... off (obviously because a particular person was pissed) it does not really make me wish to frequent the place too often. Having said that i (as i am sure quite a few regulars are) would come back and use it 2/3 times a week if things were to change. I miss the place, the regulars who still visit and the pub where i 'cut my drinking teeth'. Get a '2nd chance' reunion arranged.... advertise it and see what happens !!

Courage Best & Directors, Pride and Adnams were on offer but I espied the dreaded 'Cask Marque'' and should have known better. After a bit of a trek on a warm day a pint of Adnams should have gone down sharpish (three or four in fact) but this one was a struggle to drink. I recall drinking in here in the past when they used ot have a few unusual brews on and served a decent pint. Cask Marque seems to be the kiss of death to decent ale for some reason. Would go for the lager if I drop by again.

Great beers, the best in the area in my view, at least 3 change regularly which is good.
The food is very good and always enjoyed it.
The pub gives the feel of a very local one, you walk in through the smokers (smoking area is front door area of pub under the covers..) and the bar is normally full of locals sitting around it so you have to lean over to order which is awkward if you are new to the pub (or even been going there for years like me).
I normally visit early evening so cannot comment on the singing and I have never personally seen any trouble there. The pub is frequented by the older 'chav' but they are harmless, bit like a old british pub on the Spanish Costas.
The bar staff are friendly and the services is always good, yes they can come across moody but it is friendly and makes the kids laugh.
Although the customer welcome is good it can be a bit luck of the draw, I have been told off for putting a bike against the fence as there are flowers on it, I knew this from experience and made sure I picked a post with no flowers, made no difference one of the owners came out and gave me an earful. Also been told that 2 other guys were told to 'f* off then' when they did it.. not exactly customer focussed as described.
As you can see from all the other reviews below its a bit of a Marmite pub, either love it or hate it.
I think if you read the landlords response below it might give you an insight to the type of pub it is. It the worst bit of advertising I have seen by a landlord, insult your customers....
I would recommend a visit to make your own mind up, personally I have stopped going there due to the earful I got and since reading the landlords views below I have made the right choice.
I now go to the Long Arm and Short Arm 40 yards away as its more relaxing and friendly.

As a regular of The Sun I think the negative reviews below are totally unfair. The landlord and landlady work extremely hard and try their utmost to ensure that people enjoy themselves irrelevant of the day of the week. The landlord always puts on a fabulous show on a Saturday night and has every right to share his opinions - no matter what they are. The people who have complained are, I am sure, what is known as Those Who Are Trouble(d) (please note the acronym)!!!! Wouldn't drink anywhere else!!
I've been to tons of pubs to find one that suits normal adults and I found this one thank god and now travel 15miles each way to call it my 'local'. The staff are fantastic and the grub is to die for! The landlord and lady take the pub atmosphere seriously and have zero tolerance for trouble... They ensure people can be and act like adults that want to let their hair down and relax without serious tension... The humor is tongue and cheek and perfectly acceptable for adults! The weekend entertainment is always a joy and well worth the extended travel. Thank you to The Sun for giving me weekends to look forward too!!!
Great pub, great beer, great food (whatever that is).
I don't think I've ever had a bad pint here, you will, of course, occasionally get the 'end of barrel' but this will easily be exchanged for a proper pint on request.
Never a dull moment, FUN in The Sun.
For ratings I would, on my limited experience of drinking, give it top marks.

A ONE-OFF RESPONSE FROM THE LANDLORD: There is no doubt why independant pubs such as The Sun are closing when narrow minded & negativepeople seem to be the only ones with time on their hands to post a comment; the positive people are all in the pub enjoying themselves! The Sun has 7 top rated, Cask Marque 2010 accredited real ales. Our food is of an excellent standard & warrants the reasonable pricing: can it be that bad that our Sunday Carvery is booked for weeks in advance & customers of all nationalites come from far & wide to enjoy it. Saturday night entertainment speaksfor itself & is advertised as adult karaoke. I personallyhave worked with many top entertainers in the past including first class comedians Jimmy Jones & Bernard Manning (!) I have also supported & sung for extremely well known bands & producers. I have been in the entertainment business for 40 years, worked 7 days a week & don't particularly take kindly to such personal insults when I have ploughed everything I have into buying this pub. This is not a managed house, my partner & I work a 90 hour week each. In this current climate these idiots do not appreciate such a gem on their doorstep. It would be lovely to have the backing of a multi-million pound managed brewery but unfortuantely we have to create our own atmosphere & environment. On the positive side we are individual & not generic! Ours is a warm welcome & geared completely around the customer's experience. However, I am sure the people below would have felt quite uncomfortable as they obviously don't get out much & wouldn't particularly fit in with the decent clientele who frequent here. As a final note; To those tossers below & any others who wish to insult me personally, S*@T IN YOUR HAT & PUNCH IT!! To those people who like to enjoy themselves, good beer, great food & a landord who makes you feel part of the family - check it out for yourselves! Bring a printout of this review & receive a 20% discount off your first drink. Merry Christmas!!

If you want a few drinks then I suggest the Long Arm and Short Arm., which has a far friendler atmosphere. The Sun Inn is mainly geared towards pub grub. As others have noticed the place has a very downmarket vibe to it. Karaoke and Bernard Manning type "humour" is the order of the day on a weekend night. I would like to suggest The Long Arm and Short Arm or Waggoners (Ayot Green) for drinking. For food I suggest The East (used to The Bull) in Stanborough or else Ask In Welwyn Garden City.
Average pub. Decent beer usually. Often very crowded with people who think overpriced pub grub is gastro food. ""Long and Short" has better beer and atmosphere.
I often come here after work. The London Pride is usually quite pleasant, but the staff can be a little off-hand. I've never experienced any trouble here, but then I normally visit early evenings during the week. The food is surprisingly good. 7/10

Karaoke Saturday If you enjoy hearing a middle aged man swearing and making sexist/racist comments, on an open mike, all evening. combine that with the comments of izzy76 the previous posting and you'll begin to get an idea of the pub.
have been to this pub 3 times on a saturday. first time me & husband got abuse off 2 middle age guys at the corner of the bar who were landlords mates, second time fight in car park and third time last night another big fight with police van called and these arent kids either. not going again
Following the format of the previous review Beer - Good Ambiance - OK Staff - Good Food -mediocre and expensive Burger King need not fear the Sun burgers
Encouraged by some of the other reviews I tried the Saturday night karaoke Singing was OK, appeared to be very much a clique, but the chap on the mike's swearing and sexist/racist jokes, wore a bit thin after a while.
Popped in for a working lunch on Friday 15th Jan 2010.
Beer - Good Food - Good Ambience - Good Staff - Good Spanky - Hilarious
WIFI Network - Boooo, No WEP Key available!!
Popped in one Saturday around Christmas, for the Karaoka, to my amazement same bloke singing the same song "My Mother Eye's" see post of 23 Jan 2008. Though I'd be timewarped back 2 years, so not much variaty then. Having said that, there were two exceptional female singers, who were better than most on the TV talent shows.
have been living in the area for a year and cannot believe its taken this long to find such a gem....took the wife there for the first time on friday night to watch live music which started around 9pm. managed to sample all 6 ale pumps and can say that i did not have one bad pint...the staff and locals treat you as if they have known you for years.. space is limited inside but managed to book for sunday lunch which at 10 pounds per head i found steep initially. Due to the size of the portions and how tasty it was i soon forgot the cost. it s nice to see a pub which still serves it s lamb bloody. This place knocks socks off the crooked chimney, and so nice to run a tab at the bar without being asked for a credit card
Went to this pub last night, 1 small rioja, 1 small diet coke...an eye watering 7.20!! The place was empty at 9pm not in the least surprised at those prices, we won't be back !!
Went to this pub last Sunday. Food and beer was good. Only problem was the wifi, I went to the bar to ask for the key but was told that she couldn't give it to me right now. I suppose she was too busy, but whats the point of advertising it if you can't use it?
Great pub good atmosphere lovely people friendly bar staff what more can I say everything a pub should be
Went for lunch yesterday with my wife and maiden aunt. The whole place was friendly enough and the food was excellent. I had the beer battered cod and it was the best fish and chips I've had in a pub for ages. Then afterwards the landlord came over to ask about the fish - he'd just changed his supplier and I was the first customer to have it. The place was full of people of "a certain age" and they all semed to be enjoying themselves.
There were six real ales on offer, including Adnams Explorer as their "surprise" guest. I had the Joseph Holt 5 percenter ( possibly Fifth Sense, but i might be wrong ) and it went down extremely well. We will definitely be returning.
As an aside, to judge by the number on laptops on show there were quite a few business lunches taking place around the tables at the front !!!
We often pop in for just a drink and have never been rushed or put under pressure to drink up. However, I feel the pub is at risk of becoming a victim of it's own success. The landlord has the right attitude but he needs to keep a closer eye on his staff who struggle with the concept of customer service. An amusing recent incident was being told when we arrived at 6.00 pm for an early supper that there were no tables available when there were numerous free tables with reserved on, however, it turned out these weren't needed until 8.00 pm! Having pointed out we would be long gone by then we were found a table by a member of staff with a bit more nouse, thanks Dave! It seems a shame that they were prepared to turn away business when a little bit of commonsense solved the problem!
Lillady, you should leave Tims comments up there. People will make their own minds up and I think you'll come out on top. (Especially if you let people move from table 12 to a table near the fire ;) - AND they then win a load of prizes on the Sunday Night Raffle (Great idea - I'll not go hungry this week)
Cheers to Spanky, Dave et al!

The person below has been barred from The Sun & has a personal vendetta against the licensee. This review is completely fabricated & has been reported for removal.
This used to be a good pub until it was taken over in 2008 by a new landlord(the Karaoke king/Sugar Daddy). He's taken it from a classy, quiet, traditional drinkers pub to basically an expensive restaurant where people who only go to drink take second place. Drinkers are forcibly moved from tables to make way for diners even though the drinkers are paying 3 now for a pint. I even witnessed the thug of a landlord physically throw a frail old man out of the pub on xmas week because he was trying to finish his pint at a table that he wanted to put diners on to. The place is now a dive and I wouldn't be seen dead there again.
Recently re-discovered this pub as we are having work done at home so no kitchen or dining room.
What can I say?
The food is outstanding, The London Pride is one of the best I have had, if not THE best. The staff are very welcoming. The price is reasonable (So much so that we have eaten here 7 times in the last 10 days)
A real treat - I have family coming to WGC over Christmas and I'll definately be treating everyone to a visit to the SUN.
Keep up the great work.
Used to be a good pub, now more like a Butlins bar now. They've managed to push out most of what were the regulars over the last 2 years. Forget trying to have relaxed drink at the weekend you can't get a seat all reserved, from late afternoon for the evening cronies
still going cavery gets better and better always a friendly face behind the bar
Have visited this pub since the mid sixties.
The outstanding thing about The Sun Inn is that it has consistently presented a good pub atmosphere, with friendly bar staff and a complementary range of well kept good quality beers including Courage and Fullers.
The food is also of a reasonable level for pub grub- with generous portions.
Decent enough pub. Have never eaten there, but the choice of ale is always good.
If I was a betting man, I'd suggest that the reviews posted between 8-9 Jan all came from the same source.....

Have been a regular for many years. The sevice is good, the food very good, great carvery. The new landlords have worked hard and are excellent hosts. Landlord takes a lot of effort with flower display see the photos The pub is a bit pricey. The karaoke on Saturday! Well each to their own, it's best tried once (the landlady has an excellent voice it's worth a visit just to listen to her sing) the rest well once is enough, as in general its the same people singing the same songs practically at the same time each Saturday "Ooh no not My mothers eyes again :)". Hard to get seated on Sunday if just want a drink as mainly all tables reserved for Carvery. Still worth a vists and I'm still going :)
This pub is a pleasure to visit. Effort made in the summer with the beautiful display of flowers and then a lovely christmas display over the festive period really makes the pub very inviting. Alot of positive changes have come into place over the last year. Very pleasant atmosphere, great food and drink. A great lively saturday night. Well worth a visit any day of the week.

as a regular user of this pub for many years i would like to comment on the present landlord and landladys possitive attitude which has turned a great pub into a fantastic one.Saturday nights used to be non existant untill the karaoke started the landlord does an excellent job not just karaoke but a show with some of the best singers around plus those who just want to have a go.the traditional menu is wonderful and the sunday carvery which is excellent value has to be tasted to be belived oh and the beer which features guest real ales is some of the best around
Good food, good beer and a great atmosphere any time of the week. Great to sit outside in the warm weather. Staff are friendly and welcoming and despite the earlier comment the real ale is well kept.Guys, get the boys from CAMRA down, they'll tell you. A proper, traditional pub.
The Sun Inn provides a warm and friendly atmosphere, the staff are friendly, ane the new landlord and landlady have made this pub truly outstanding. The food is absolutly out of this world, (try out the Sunday Carvery) Entertainment provided on a Stauray night karaoke, honestly not a night to be missed.
Well worth a visit, your missing out if you don't take a look for yourself, and when you have been once you will be hooked!!!
Ignore the earlier comments about this pub. It's clean and very well kept. Current landlords have improved on what was already an excellent pub. As for the karaoke on Saturdays - even if you don't want to get up on the mic, you'll hear some of the best singers to be heard on the karaoke circuit - I know - I've been to hundreds of karaokes!
Food & drink are ok and the pub has a nice feel to it, however the Saturday night entertainment policy e.g karaoke is pretty poor and best avoided.
Where did all the comments go? Much room for improvement, but beer by and large good, regular guests. Karaoke truly awful. It says singers keep coming back every week above. It's the same singers, very small in number.

Always seems to have a good selection of guest beers. Something new on every (infrequent) visit. Not convinced they're always well kept though. Had to return a pint recently for tasting like vinegar & was assured by the bar staff that "it's supposed to taste like that sir". Sit in the car park to avoid the karaoke & you'd almost think it was a decent pub.
