Went to this pub as tried some Brew Company Ales at Beer festivals and loved them. Was pleased they had so many on and rotated them. Especially when they had Hop Ripper - the best Pale Ale I have ever tasted - and I make a mission to try every Pale I can - and have covered a lot of ground!! Lots of other guest ales too and recently tried the food - which is very good traditional pub grub and very well priced compared to may other Sheffield pubs that have inferior food. The Bar staff are always very friendly and knowledgable - and great bands on a Saturday too. A great pub! One of the best!

spacious, comfortable & top quality beer. Quieter than the Fat Cat & a welcome contrast
Last pub before heading off and arriving late at the New York stadium to see the mighty U's grab a 95th minute equaliser. New scratch for me and an pretty impressed with the beer range - I really must write them down as after 4 or 5 at lunchtime it's difficult to remember what I had, but they were definitely Brew Company, and like the other pubs we visited in Sheffield all excellent. 7.5/10

After a couple of pints in The Fat Cat the five of us made the short journey to The Harlequin having never been before. It is a spacious split-level pub with good amenities but.... we just did not like the beer (Brew Company) so sadly we left them and headed off to the Kelham Island Tavern. I will try this pub again as it does get some good reviews and perhaps a different beer? Sorry guys!

This pub goes from strength to strength. The Shakespeare may have deservedly won pub of the year but this place must have pushed it close. I would say beer quality better here, there is some strong quality control going on. Great staff, great landlady, and very reasonable prices. But they also have some fancy craft beers too, always undercutting the likes of the tap and dada. This is pretty much my idea of the perfect pub. 11/10

Awesome pub, great beer and cider. Wish I lived nearer!
Average kind of real ale establishment. The pint of 1832 was okay rather than good. There was a rather cryptic kind of quiz whihc very few of the particpants managed to get much of right while I was there.

The pub is home to The Brew Company beers too. As well as great cask beers they also have a good range of cider and perry. Normally live music at the weekends. Known to we locals as The Manchester after its former name.
Good selection of Ales, food and Open Mike night. Very attentive staff. Handy for 1 on the way to/from Kelham Island.

Called in last Friday with the missus. I've been in the Harlequin many times before and we are well acquainted with Sheffield's 'valley of beer'. Very few people in the pub while we were in (8:30 ish). Got myself a pint of something which I can't remember the name of now but which was clearly 'off'. Had an initial slurp and my wife had a sip because I wanted to confirm what I thought (although I didn't have any doubt). Took the more than 3/4 pint back to the bar and had a (pleasant) discussion with the lad behind the bar who insisted that this beer was mean't to taste like this (vinegar flavoured beer, what a novelty!). He eventually agreed to change it for something else and then pulled me a half because he said that was all the landlady would allow as a replacement.
I shan't be going back here. I don't make a habit of complaining without good reason and if there had been any doubt about the beer I would not have had an issue with drinking it. I have had many, many beers over the years which have not been to my taste but I wouldn't dream of taking them back unless they were obviously 'off'. Many more good pubs in the vicinity so I shan't miss this one too much.

Very good pub with decent staff and a wide selection of cask ales. Worth a visit.

Good pub as part of my sheffield ale crawl. Bit dissappointed with a customer yelling at the barman calling him an arsehole. To me an excellent ale pub but you cant choose ya customers.
Me and my No T'ale always start our Valley Beer Crawl in here. Chip Butty and cellar runs!!!! Yum Yum!
Have visited in the evening and it was great. Had Harlequin bitter which was lovely and only 2.20 a pint. Unbelievable value. We went on quiz night and thoroughly enjoyed it, the questions were perfect and we nearly won. Staff are excellent, there is a lovely local feel about the place, can't fault it!

Another excellent Sheffield pub, second only to the Fat Cat in my opinion. With 10 ales and 11 ciders/perries, this is an essential stop on any Sheffield crawl and one where we stopped a little longer than originally planned. The interior is nothing special, and this is the only reason I rated the Fat Cat higher. The single room is large, but has no particular character. There is a garden at the rear, which we did not explore. But the main reason to come here (and probably linger) is the beer and cider range. Yesterday's visit had as follows - Raw Dark Peak Stout, Northumberland Fuggles Gold, Brampton Tramway, Brew Company Zeta, Theta & Epsilon (these were certainly keeping the bar staff confused), Fugelstou Village Life, Glentworth Going Loco, Harlequin Best Bitter & Blonde. Ciders and perries were Cobbledicks Whiskey Cask, Olivers Perry, Udders Orchard Whisky Cask & Perry, Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon, Haymaker & Two Trees Perry, Westons Cider Twist Raspberry, Broadoak KB & Millwhites Rum Cask & Rioja Cask. I will be back at some point.
Another great no-nonsense beer pub in Sheffield. Our dog and us were made very welcome by the lovely lass behind the bar. The Raw Dark Peak Stout was outstanding, wish I could have stayed longer to sample the other ales. Will return very soon for a proper evening session. 10/10
Another good pub! Good ale selection, and pub quite big inside.
A large pub with a large range of beers, 11 on my visit, at reasonable Sheffield prices. A large selection of meals. Pint to the line oversized glasses a major plus point for me, we went on the Monday as was informed that was why the beer was a bit cheaper than advertised.
My first experience of a beer in Sheffield. Great pub in a rather derelict area - useful it faces the Sheaf river. Open & airy pub with diffrent sections of seating. 9 ales on tap & the Acorn Darkness was very good at only 2.50/pint. I also tried the Brew group Hop Monster. Large Cider list & a good large of bottled beers - a lot of them span the entire Anchor Steam brewery range. 9/10 has to be.
Not that impressed given the reviews. Worth a try if you're in the area and a few good ales on; Justinian, Strawberry Blonde and Acorn Porter are the ones we had. Fairly run-down inside but again worth a stop for the beer if nearby.
I don't know why but for some reason I was expecting this place to be a bit dark & dingy inside. I couldn't have been more wrong. Open plan, clean & airy this is a single room boozer on 2 levels. A superb choice of handpumps including their own Harlequin Best Bitter & Harlequin Blonde. However it was their massive selection of mainly American bottled beers that really impressed me - any pub that sells Goose Island IPA is well worth a visit in my opinion.
This was the Manchester Hotel and had a superb Ward's frontage including tiling and leaded windows. It's now all modern. However, it's reliable and recommended for beer, also good sandwiches. The pub is now run by the nearby Brew Company, and their house beers are very good. Bus 53 from town.
Good pub with a large selection of well-kept beers. Sometimes feels a bit overly busy, though that just reflects its popularity. Small yard out back isn't great, particularly with the industrial-strength extractor fan blowing across the tables. But these are minor quibbles; it's basically very good, and makes a fine alternative to the excellent Kelham Island Tavern, Fat Cat and other "Valley of Beer" pubs.
Excellent pub. Huge range of drinks at very good prices and a huge range of customers. Friendly staff. Can get very busy on Friday and Saturday night. I've only ever had very well kept beer here. Highly recommended.
Great pub. Regular beers are a Blonde and Best Bitter brewed by Brew Co and 10 others including Spire, Northumberland, Glentworth, Old Mill, Durham, Milton and White Rose. Foreign draught beer including Paulaner Weisse and Budvar Dark and plenty of bottles in the fridge. Quiet on a Saturday lunchtime. Recommended.
A good place, this. Friendly staff. Wide range of regularly changing beers. Convivial atmosphere - middle aged but youthful; some students. Well attended music nights which are a mixed bag, some pub singers belting outs 60s numbers and some good blues singers. They advertise their Thai accomodation in the gents', which isn't something you expect to see in a pub in central Sheffield. Or in any pub for that matter.
Large selection of well kept ale but the pub itself needs a serious make-over. Every shelf was crammed with charity shop - style tat ornaments. Maybe I'm missing the point and it's meant to be some kind of joke. It was like being sat in an old peoples home, so I didn't stick around for long. 5/10
Great selection of beers, pub was a bit tired when we called in december but it had been a busy day by all accounts. Tidy pint.
Excellent choice of beers and great atmosphere. We've had to leave a couple of times on Saturdays when the live music made it impossible to have a conversation. Personally, I prefer the Harlequin on a week-night.
Another visit on Friday and excellent beers as always with good company and friendly staff in this superb pub. Enjoyed a couple from Mallinsons, the Hop Cracker from Brew Company and a new Church End.
First visit here on Saturday. Good selection of, in the main, local and localish brews. Beer in good condition, nice atmosphere and good sevice. The great big rolls being served at lunchtime looked good too!
Once again for Sheffield, glad to simply endorse recent reviews for the Harlequin. Different people will prefer the Fat Cat, or the Wellington, or the Kelham Island Tavern on a Sheffield crawl, but the Harlequin can hold its head up in that company. The strengths of this pub are the space and comfort, simple but good food, the range of high quality beers, the friendly staff and even the piped music is far better/more varied than the normal conversation-sapping pap.
And i thought The Kelham Island Tavern was Sheffield's best................I was Wrong!!(only just though!), Absolutely amazing pub this, it was my last one i needed to tick off from the good beer guide and i soon realised i had saved the best for last!!! stayed and quaffed 4 winner pints at amazingly cheap prices and very friendly service, Shall deffo return!!! Well Done :)
Oops--- if no-one spotted my mistake I was there on Saturday, not Friday for the beer tickers excellent pre Xmas fest.
Another excellent visit on Friday to this pub packed with beer tickers for their pre Xmas festival. Wonderful atmosphere and excellent beers. Enjoyed Beeston Stirling, Bull Box Ho Bloody Ho, Gertie Sweet Gertie Sweet and Peerless Full Wack IPA.
Another visit to this fine pub as we caught a train in to do a crawl of favourite pubs. Had lunch, excellent menu of pub meals like lasagne and chips and chilli and chips for 3 alongside sarnies for soaking beer up. 14 ales on we had not sampled before along with house beers. Great range of well kept beers in sparkling clean glasses. We found new brewery Steel Company Life of Brian, Brew Company Golden Wunder, Keltek Galahads IPA, and Salopian Zeppelin helped the food down great. Shame we couldn't stay for more really. Best choice of the day here.
A single roomed open-plan pub on two levels, quite posh compared to a number of nearby outlets, in a twee retro manner to quote a reviewer below. Oversized glasses are used to serve a fine range (10) of well-kept ales, including a few rare brews for the area I noticed a Ballard and Rebellion beer on the go. Piped music with a varied, eclectic output. Good value sarnies available at 1.50 a go, which were excellent, just like my nan would make. Theres boardgames available to keep you amused, along with a dartboard. Live music is advertised, blues being a popular choice it seems.
Overall, highly recommended if you like your beer. Not too far away from the KIT-Cat combo and on the way back (sort of!) to the train station, so well-worthwhile.
An awe inspiring selection of beer, and a very friendly place all in all. Everything a proper pub should be, and 2 superb Salamander brewery beers on (plus another 10 or so). Drank with the Chef who was pushing my definitions of sane.
Another northern Sheffield classic - great atmosphere and beer range, though rather let down by an average pint of Magnet (I have to have one when in Sheffield !)
This pub was the reason for my stay locally in the caravan in March as I just love it. Love the staff, the beers and the pub. The beer festival was fantastic and we called in Thursday and Friday having travelled on the lovely rail line from Brockholes. It is a clean tidy pub with comfortable seating. Brilliant food at reasonable prices add to the perfection. Not to be missed on any crawl of the area.
Traditional one bar open plan pub on Nursery Street, situated the other side of the River Don from the other "Valley of Beer" pubs and opposite a number of newish residential developments.
The Harlequin is yet another keen supporter of local micros
There's 8-9 pumps in total. Beers on included Old Bear brewery ( Keighley ) and beers from Landmark and Hambleton on my recent end-March visit.
The interior is comfortably furnished and on two levels. There's plenty of bric a bric and other exhibits to add interest to the interior.
The pub offers regular live music and beer festivals and is now listed in the 2009 GBG.
In conclusion, well worth the shortish walk to include in any crawl of the surrounding area.
A great selection of sparkling real ales really well kept. Our only gripe was we couldn't get food as we arrived a few minutes too late - after 2.30pm. Shame they don't have rolls made up behind the bar. We would have stayed longer if we could have been fed.
Derby Blonde Escape & Outrageous Drop, Blakemere Ferriers Fettle, OPA Hays Engels Porter, Goffs White Knight, Bradfield Farmers Blonde, JS Magnet, Bollington Happy Valley, Milestone Classic Dark Mild, Brew Co Winter Tan, Goose Eye Owa Thill, 1 unclipped, beers dispensed in over-size glasses. Carpetted open plan room winds around the bar, banquette surround seating, cushioned stools, wood tables, down a step to an area with piano, dartboard in far corner. Varying soundtrack (Acker Bilk, Rock&Roll, Motown), live music seems to lean toward blues Tim Rodwell last Thurs, another band Sat. The whats on board noted MonAles from 1.50, TuesFolk Nt, WedQuiz, Thurslive music (TR), Frifree buffet, SatAle in the afternoon (I askedwas told just sit & drink!). Not architecturally characterful but a great deal to like herea pub obviously making an effort, and a marvellous beer line-up. Fairly busy & chatty on my visit. Recommended.
Relative newcomer to the "Valley of Beer" ale trail. 10 handpumps with a fine array of beer and styles including a mild, a porter and a stout last Saturday. A couple on from Northern as well to please the lighter ale lovers. The two pint I had Goffs White Knight and Brew Company Winter Tan were excellent. The pub is on two levels with comfortable seat all around. There is bric-a-brac on almost every available space with everything from Wallace wearing the wrong trousers to seated Indian Chiefs. I think this place is a in a good location myself as it's 5 minutes from Kelham Island on the way back to town. 5 minutes is long enough to wait for a beer if you're on a crawl.
Late review from November beer festival. I love this pub, its staff and customers, but most of all its beer. Not just when there is a festival on either. It is a great place to be.
Can't understand the last comment, this pub was very busy on a Saturday night when I visited with people of all ages. Great selection of ales and boardgames to occupy yourself with if you are so inclined-why not? Not particularly poorly located as it is about 5mins walk from the centre and handy for starting a pub crawl up the Don valley.
Old fashioned coach party type of pub. Mildly amusing in a twee retro manner. 10 different cask ale compensate - almost - for the lack of atmosphere or self-awareness. This is like the lounge bar of an old people's home. Or one of those hotels used for cheap holidays. It's all the bad jokes about Northern Working Men's Clubs. Check to see if there's a pair of false teeth in your beer before you drink it!
There's some of the board games you'll find in a Blackpool guest house.
This is just off Kelham Island, but shares their situation of being poorly located.
excellent large ale pub. quiet on Saturday lunchtime visit......beautiful pints of Bradfield Stout and Farmers Blonde and Nutty Slack Mild 3.9% (recommended). fine new venue for me, on the now legendary Fat Cat, KIT, Wellington crawl.
Excellent selection of ales, interesting lagers and the wine's not bad. Quiz on a Wednesday which is great and they currently host the quiz of another pub on Sunday evenings - the pub concerned is still being refurbed after the floods. Welcoming place, a great 'local'.
Visited the Harlequin whilst the 'Floody Hell' Beer Festival was on in Sheffield back in August and was delighted with not only the pub and the selection of ales but also with the friendliness of the staff - Managed to get 3 'winners' in Durhams Citrus Pale Ale, Station Houses 3 Score & Kelham Islands Weirs Mi Wellied Don and would have stayed and sampled the other 5 real ales had I not been pressed for time. Can't wait for the Beer festival in just under 2 weeks time (Fri 23rd & Sat 24th Nov) - I'm making the trek up from Folkestone especially.
It is great to see this pub fully open after the recent Sheffield floods. It is close to the Kelham Island Tavern, and well worth a visit by those seeking real ale while in the area. 10 beers on offer served by friendly staff. They also serve good quality reasonably priced food.
