Excellent traditional pub, don't be put off by scruffy exterior, good beer and food, tried the Reet Pale 4%, so good tried it again.

I had an hour to kill between trains in Sheffield so I did a quick pub tick to kill the time. I remember the Rutland from 20 years ago when it were a pub you wouldn't visit, how times have changed including the area.

A fair sized corner plot pub with an open plan bar area that was previously 2 separate drinking areas'. Now a days it's home to lots of old beer bottles, various trophies and a large amount of pump clips.

7 cask hand pumps, my choice was Blue Bee’s Hillfoot Best Bitter @ 4.0%, an interesting ale but still drinkable. A very good range of small brewery ales on the taps, in addition to the cask hand pumps there was a another couple of ales on keg.

I stayed for about 45 minutes reading a couple of the beer magazines that were left on the window ledge, the crowd in were very mixed with ages ranging from 25 to 65. All in all this is another tick from the 2015 guide and a decent pub away from the crowd's at Sheffield station

Truly brilliant. Smallish pub, but plenty of seating with the bar in the corner. Good enough range of beer. I cant quite put my finger on it, but one of the best pubs I've ever been in.

Swift pint before the game.Like last season the local tipple from the brewery was excellent. Blue Bee ales are pretty good stuff to sip. Friendly service and good banter with the locals too.

Shame we had to go to the football, otherwise it is a pub you could stay in and enjoy.

A good trad boozer with a friendly atmosphere and helpful staff. A varied selection of ales in good condition. I always pop in when waiting for a train.

Great beer, brilliant range of ciders too. Food was fantastic. definitely a must if you are in the area

We headed here for a couple of beers and a snack before our train to Barnsley and as usual it was well worth it. They now have at least two beers from their own Blue Bee brewery (the Nectar was just right - light and tasty). Great snacks (try the Smutty Rutty Butty). Very busy as United were at home and this pub is probably the nearest and best for real ale and "sensible" fans. Looked like the re-decorating was still going but at least the seating was back in place since our last visit. A short walk from the station and another of Sheffield's many recommended pubs.

Reasonable enough pub with plenty of ales on. Had a nice pint of Hilsborough Wentworth here.

Good boozer, handy for station.
Beer well kept, including four from Blue Bee brewwery.
pwilkins - 20 Dec 2011 12:43
A decent and popular pub with well kept ales. It was that full that we sat upstairs, which was a shame as that room is tired and grubby and lets the rest of the pub down.

Much improved pub with good selection of beers and ciders. Well worth a look in!

Great beers, traditional decor, friendly staff, good quiz, decent beer garden, friendly clientele...what more could I say. Well worth a visit. My only quibble was the lack of any beer under 4%.

Good traditional pub with rather ramshackle seating arrangements. Excellent range of beer (about 10 ales) with extra on I think because of the CAMRA AGM. Don't fancy the toilets much - wait till the next pub.
Booze_Allen - 20 Apr 2011 14:26
Splendid facade to this corner pub which offers a good range of beers including some from The Blue Bee Brewery (new to me). Popular with Blades fans (but the sensible type who enjoy good real ale) and with cider drinkers - good selection.
Not that far from the station and city centre and well worth the walk. My Bhaji Butty was brilliant - and very filling. Nice cosy atmosphere, prompt and efficient service and overall a very good boozer.

A 10 minute walk from the city centre The Rutland Arms is an oasis in a desert of 21st century architectural blandness. The fine tiled Art Deco style exterior is striking. Inside the Smoke Room & Tap Room have been knocked through to create a bright, pleasant interior. Stained glass, dark wood & red velvet seating makes for a very cosy feel. Good choice of both real ales & ciders. Well worth seeking out

Very good boozer overshadowed by the newish development of Sheffield Hallam university and therefore taking a lot of student business. Like so many nearby pubs, the Rutland has a good selection of beer (half a dozen handpumps with an ever-changing beer selection, mostly from Derbyshire/Yorkshire breweries), inexpensive food and a mostly bustling atmosphere. It also boasts the best beer garden of all the city centre pubs that I am aware of, marking it up to 8/10 for me.

I bowled into the Rutland this evening, having been meaning to go for ages. Superb example of an ex-pubco pub come good - fantastic, traditional interior with a nice mixture of seating - comfortable tables and chairs, along side various sofas. The beer I had was spot on - elected to try the Acorn Blonde, an unusual move for me since I normally tend to avoid Acorn beers nowadays - but it was a delight, as was my Cottage Brewing Normans Conquest. There were at least 4 other ales on too, it is a shame that I had to leave. It was pretty quiet when I went in on a Sunday evening - people will probably complain of the quiz machine/jukebox, but I think this pub achieves an excellent balance. Food menu looked tasty, and I will eat on my next visit. Beer garden looked appealling.

Called Saturday evening. Splendid place. Beer was cracking and the pub feels very friendly. It is still relatively unspoilt (although it has clearly been 'knocked through' at some point) with some very impressive stained glass in the place. Can't comment on the food because haven't tried it yet (but I will). This is the second time I have called in. On the first occasion (Saturday lunchtime), including us, there were four people in the pub. Last Saturday evening it was busier but by no means heaving. If pubs as good as this can't pack 'em in it's not suprising that pubs are closing as fast as they are.

This pub has been reopened after a bit of a clean up but not overdone, it still looks like a homely local.

Good real ales, home made food (including proper chips!) and a warm welcome from the staff.

Well, this pub just warms your heart. I hope Quinno below is as delighted as I am to see this place back on its feet. If he/she has not returned yet, please do. This is a great example of a pub being run down by a pubco then being sold to someone who really cares about pubs. They have turned this place around. A couple of chain ales from marstons are on but never mind - 3 or 4 local ales on and the two I had were top notch. Back to its best if not better.
dry_riser_inlet - 4 Nov 2009 21:17
Reported as sold on by Punch Taverns and now just re-opened as a Free House.

A wonderfully imposing faade which is a sort of flat V-shape with numerous old touches in the tiled decoration. However what should have been a characterful interior was let down the lack of general maintenance which left a lot to be desired; numerous scuffs, drill holes in the wall and worn-out seat coverings which detracted from the positives like the large stained glass 'Rutland' sign to the right of the main bar. The toilets smelt quite bad too. Three ales were available (TT Landlord, Deuchars IPA and Black Sheep), my IPA was OK, no great shakes.

Theres plenty of potential here but it sounds like its been purposefully run-down in order to close it. Shameful.
Quinno - 24 Aug 2009 23:33
Sadly, now closed and boarded up
oftenscore6 - 24 Aug 2009 11:48
This is a traditional street corner pub that has become somewhat incongruous amongst the modern buildings in an increasingly studenty area near Sheffield Hallam and not far from the station. Note the fine tiling on the exterior. Inside its open plan and always seems very quiet on my visits, even on weekends. Still trading and still dealing in good beer- Landlord was on form and Deuchars also available on my visit. Service nice and friendly. It does need to be rejuvenated in some way, but i dread to think what this might entail in a student area- the inevetable 'refurb' may not be a good thing, so visit while you can.
Carlurmston - 30 Apr 2009 13:01
Quite a number of the pictures on the walls seem to have been removed, so maybe a refurb coming or has recentl changed hands? Three real ales on, had a decent pint of Landlord, pretty quiet for a Saturday.

Facing an uncertain future, regularly running out of beer and no longer seems to be doing food. They often don't even have any milk for a tea or coffee. A shame, because it has a nice beer garden, friendly staff, and a good choice of real ales when they are actually on.
SheffieldMickey - 2 Mar 2008 23:52
This place sells Stowford Press so is great to nip in for a quick pint, especially when waiting for a train. It's only 5 mins from the station.
chrisnnr - 19 Jan 2008 00:40
Brilliant place with Hopback Summer lightening on... heaven.
rwmarsh - 8 Jul 2007 23:44
Excellent place to visit if you like real ale, no less than 7 beers are served in a very clean and relaxed venue. The beer garden is worth a look too if the weather is good!
and it is NOT closing down as it had rumours that it was.
Great place, i will be back
camraman - 3 May 2007 10:09
Great pub - friendly service and good choice of beers. We went here before watching Pompey against Sheff Utd and there was a good mix of locals and away fans, all enjoying a good time. As for closing regrettably, it seems it is due for closure in the not too distant future which would be a shame.
copnorsteve - 14 Jan 2007 20:42
A lovely pub handy for the railway station - good beer, good food, friendly staff. Have just heard that it was due to close down in December 2006. Can it be true? I hope not. Anyone out there know anything?
chick - 4 Jan 2007 15:14
A classic pub with eccentric interior decor and a clientele of anarchists, radio journalists and the occasional rock star. Friendly staff, fantastic beer garden and decent beer.
dougald - 26 Oct 2006 19:48
For those with time to spend between trains, this pub is ideal. The room (it's all one room now) is decorated with plates and other eclectic ornaments. Five pumps for a decent selection of ales and if you are fortunate to visit on warm days, there is a superb award-winning garden.
Alerover - 1 Sep 2006 20:48
nice pub with lovely ales and peaceful atmosphere. the lamb casserole was very good.
paulcoret - 25 May 2006 20:29
A smashing pub with good choice of real ales in a relaxing atmosphere. The Timothy Taylors was on very good form and the bar staff are always friendly and attentive. Highly recommended.
Beerybloke - 7 May 2006 18:21
A good pub for a relaxing pint (or several) of normally well kept real ale. There are normally 7 ales on. However, none of them are from any of the local small breweries.
blitzy - 28 Jan 2006 11:58
Excellent pint of Taylor's really good pub for a quiet pint.
BigJapp2 - 28 Jul 2005 15:00
Excellent food - the beers are a bit 'same-y' though - there's never a decent dark ale on. Top beer garden which is good to escape the variable quality of the muzak tape. Rates 7/10
Paul grimshaw - 16 Nov 2004 13:39
A warm, welcoming, quiet relaxing pub to suit all. Friendly landlord and staff, excellent food and good old real ale to wash it down with
michael - 12 Nov 2004 15:12
10/10 for service, lovely meals, well poured pints and a relaxing atmosphere to escape the city chaos
andrew parkinson - 12 Nov 2004 15:05
A quiet 'conversation' pub where you can enjoy real ale. A friendly landlord and staff to match!
michael wilkinson - 12 Nov 2004 15:04
This is a friendly, welcoming pub a stone's throw from the railway station offering good value food and Bed/Breakfast accommodation. I had the pleasure earlier in 2003 of enjoying a superbly kept pint of Barnsley Bitter with my lunch (I forget what I *ACTUALLY* ate but remember being very impressed). Recommended. A good 8/10.
lad_newton - 15 Sep 2003 17:29
Smallish, comfy pub near the station. Good food and cheap accommodation. Classic, award winning, walled pub garden resembles a micro Kew Gardens.
