Cracking pub, next to the ferry slip... I'm not going to lie, after catching the ferry to North Shields many hours earlier, then delighting in the hostelries of Tynemouth, then standing in the rain on the top deck of ferry return journey, I can't remember the beer I had. But, importantly, pub was busy and friendly and beer good.. Mentiioned the ferry because its magnificent travelling the Tyne at this wide point...

Handy for ferry and decent ales.

Recent new management have seen a much needed increase in trade, the place heaving with custom during visits on several occasions in April and June 2013 the bar showed a good range of ales (nearly 10 on tap) including Boondoggle, Snecklifter, EPA, many more. Only once saw a pump not in use. Cider included Moonshine. Service responsive and polite, pub atmosphere oldie worldie with interesting pictures on walls. Beer garden overlooks the ferry landing and river and pleasant when there isn't a gale blowing off the river. Awkward steps to negotiate on way in and to the toilets if disabled.

Canny little pub. Part of the 'golden 3' in shields. The others being the maltings and the steamboat, both listed on here. Good choice of beers, lovely location on the banks of the tyne. Friendly staff. Was recently closed for financial reasons, I believe, but now reopened and still a little cracker.8/10

My third pub of the day following the Wouldhave and Rosie Malones (the latter an Irish pub by the market place and not listed on here). The Alum Ale House has a good vantage point of the ferry port to North Shields. On the opposite bank, a warship (I believe the Ark Royal) was causing some interest. Entering just before 11am, I was the first customer here. The main bar has bare floorboards, whilst a side bar is carpeted and has wood panelling with pictures of boats. The bar itself has nice tiling. The pub was cold first thing. There was no obvious TV, but the radio was playing. Live entertainment was advertised including Poker night on Mondays as well as Buskers nights and live music. I don't recall the beers, but they were all from the Marstons range. 3 clips were turned and another handpull was unclipped.

Very pleasant, light and airy pub close to North/South Shields Ferry berth. Excellent choice of ales, and judging by the couple I had - really well kept. Only note of caution would be that when I visited - late afternoon - some of the customers had clearly been in a while and were somewhat loud and raucous. But not at all threatening. Each to their own. Still somewhere I'd go back to - justified by the views and the excellent beers.

Looking a bit dejected in the photo. Hopefully will re-open soon. Always a busy pub, I cannot understand why its still closed.

Closed down 2010

Prominent landmark as you land from the Shields ferry, so diverted from my planned route to try a quick one in this self-proclaimed 'ale house'. Turned out to be a decent sort of pub, with a friendly atmosphere and a good selection of real beer. Thoroughly enjoyed my nice pint of Thwaites' Wainwright sitting at a table on the curiously stepped outdoors seating area in the unseasonably warm sunshine.

I'm not from Shields but I always make a point of popping in here for a livener. It's at its best n the middle of the afternoon when you can nurse a pint of Old Warbler and gaze across the Tyne at radges steeling wheels from cars over in North Shields.

Always enjoy having a couple in the Alum. Prob my fav bar in sand dancer land. Lovely old bar located away from the wild west that is the town centre. Good atmoshpere and decent beer!

Great location right next to the Shields Ferry terminal. Several ales on handpum - can't remember which I had but it was past it's best and I didn't finish it. Clientele included a lot of rather annoying yuppie types. (Yes, yuppies in South Shields.)
I much preferred the Steamboat about 100 yards away.

Located by the passenger ferry landing, this is a great pub to wait for the next ferry. I think there were 5 interesting beers on offer on my visit including Oakham Ales Monpessons Gold, the Rev James, High House Farm Auld Hemp and Houston Killellan. Theres a strange outside seating area (we didnt have time to lock our bikes) but inside is comfortable and feels friendly.
