Still much as Billyfish says. I was very impressed to see three local breweries represented namely Dark Star, Old Dairy, and Three Legs. Food was very good but pricey

I strolled on by this place as I thought it was just a restaurant. Turns out there is a bar inside, a proper bar too with a nice little selection of ales - Old Man amongst the more regular Sussex faces. In fact it's quite pubby and welcoming round the back, but it's a hotel at the same time so you can order cocktails too. How spiffy!

By contrast the dining room is acres large and sort of 1930s stylee I guess. Really quite nice and tasteful. The food is OK. it's good. It didn't blow me away. If I'd eaten in the pub bit I'd have probably thought it was a nice bit of low brow gastro, as it was dining in a restaurant it was alright. Prices were fine so I am guessing the below is out of date (and the Ladhimself's comments just entertainingly barmy).

I said to him: "Is that your wife in the corner with the stetson on?"

He said: "Yes, it is. We're waiting for the divorce papers to come through."

"Is she of sound mind and body?" I replied.

"Yes," he confirmed.

"Good, I'll get me coat."

I stayed here 27 years ago with Lord Funnock of Fife, my probation officer for the current financial year. He is a tender and caring man, despite what it says in the registry of peers.
I had a pint of Su Pollard pale ale and, from the brunch menu, a warm salad of deep fried battered goose and Okra.
His Lordship slept.
I will definitely be urinating against their door someday soon.

Absolutely dreadful beyond belief.
When we stayed for the weekend there was all sorts of building work in progress. Noisy, dirty but still very expensive.
We left a day early as we could take no more.
The food looked OK but was nothing special.
Overpriced, shocking and shambolic. Don't eat, drink or stay here.

Stayed the weekend at the hotel and visited the bar a few times over the weekend. Disappointing not to be told the dining room was closed so had to have dinner in bar too. Food was great but the scary head waitress shouting to the bar staff didn't do much for the atmosphere (WHO MOVED MY KEYS!!!) and in response to the lumpen bread - YES ITS NOT VERY GOOD IS IT. Lots of long faces behind the bar, but we did get great service from one barman. And some of his excellent cocktails, rosemary and thyme thing was amazing. Compared notes with fellow guests at anotehr estaurant the next night and they too found the atmosphere strained and not helped by Herself bellowing across the bar. Easy stuff to fix. But i expected better at these prices.

Lunched in the Tap Room during Rye Bay Scallop Festival. Beautifully appointed bar, charming bar staff, interesting selection of well kept beers and home made pork scratchings.

Unfortunately the food turned out to be execrable. Our 'Scallop, Cod and Saffron Leek Pie' turned out to be a mush of volcanically hot mashed potato, the faintest hint of scallop and cod, no leeks or saffron and (worst) bulked out with farmed salmon. We also saw people consuming Scallops with salad, in which the scallops had clearly been sliced into three - so about 1.5 scallops per 7+ serving.

Back to the good points - we complained about the 'pie', our complaint was taken seriously and were not charged for it. We were told a new head chef is imminent. I sincerely hope so, because they have got everything else right.

Lunch enjoyed! average prices. friendly staff, comfortable surroundings. Will definitely return.

It's not expensive to drink in The George and plenty of locals do.

The expensive re-fit was obviously designed with the well heeled in mind, but the owners have realised that a well stocked bar inhabited only by self-important trustafarians demanding a good arse kissing along with a jug of iced, lemoned and free tap water isn't good for business.

So, for years now, The George has been my favourite bar for a few pints, a lot of pints, lunch with the wife or a coffee and sandwich with the sports section.

I have been made welcome whether I've been 'smart casual' or covered in mud and dropping bits of fishing kit all over the shop.

Very expensive. Staff are very friendly but not at all knowledgeable. It's all very well having real ales, but when all the bar staff are foreign (which isn't an issue) they really need some training in what British beers are about. Enthusiasm can't always substitute for experience! The owners have clearly spent a lot of money on refurbishing the place, but made too little investment in the actual operation.

I found the food inconsistent and the service slapdash. While I was at the bar four people were waiting to be served and nobody behind the bar for about five minutes. My wife ordered an amaretto after dinner and was told they had run out. They hadn't - the waitress just couldn't be bothered to go and get a new bottle. There are much nicer - and better value - pubs and restaurants in Rye.

It is a pity that the new..ish owners of this Hotel did not spend any of their, (obviously large) refurbishment budget on the training of staff in basic cellarmanship.
I have been in about four times over the last month or so and on each occasion the real ales have been cloudy and vinegary in taste - especially the Harveys best.
Upon requesting a fresh pint of another beer this week, I was met with the old chestnut of 'noone else has complained about it'
Hard to contest when I was the only one in the bar... Nuff said?
The new owners of this 'boutique' hotel need to train their staff in customer service and stop charging top dollar for a sub standard product.
All stripped oak, lift muzak, dry white wine, smugness and zero atmosphere.
Go to the Standard down the hill for a decent pint without the 'attitude'and save 50p on a pint...

Recently boycotted by locals due to their policy of no drinking if your'e not eating policy on the weekend.
Anyway - overpriced! 4.50 for a small glass of wine!

They can stick it

The considerable character that The George once had has been swept away by over-zealous new owners. What a terrible shame! You only have to look at the new signs outside to know - all lower-case and not a capital letter to be seen; "the george in rye". The bar has been extended, and would grace any bland hotel-chain clone. Oh, and they've painted the outside in a suitable shade of grey.

This place does feel very 'hotel-ish' upon entering, but once you get through to the back bar area, it becomes a little less formal.

The real ales on tap were really rather top-notch (if a little pricey), and service from the staff was excellent - very polite and efficient.

It seems that a nice crowd drink in this place, no rowdy yobs or youths.

Rye bonfire parade - the busiest night of the year in town. This place decides to only admit those who've booked in advance. Stuff 'em!!!!
MankyBadger - 10 Nov 2007 23:24
Very posh, not cheap, but four ales on the pump and the food looks & smells good. Must try it next time.
MankyBadger - 26 May 2007 22:15
have visited four times since it has reopened and have failed to be served on each occasion. very poor
sitysupper - 20 May 2007 12:03
This is the bar of the George Hotel.

EXPENSIVE, fact.

But just as a hotel should be it's clean, tidy, well furnished and the staff are polite and knowledgeable.
Oldsod - 24 Mar 2007 13:45
Local ales and cider, including wines from Kent and East Sussex
