Obviously under new management, the staff were friendly and the food was good, needs a bit of a paint job, but otherwise a very pleasant visit. defiantly be back.

Grim. Firstly the bars were totally unstaffed and seemingly deserted, after shuffling through the depressing dimly lit seated corridors to the lower bar through some young children running about we were curtly told 'bar closed go to the top bar'. When someone eventually turned up they didn't know how how to work the only ale pump then when, in desparation, I picked the 'Frisky Bison' drink heavily advertised on the screens and posters I was met with a blank look and a 'what is that?'. At that point my soul died.

a lot now since simon left. beer is as it should be. new staff are helpfull towards me as i am disabled

Brilliant pub, great music at the weekend and the beer is good
Shame. Used to be a great pub in the 50s right up to the 80s. Went downhill rapidly when refurbished a few years ago. Change of management and morons behind the bar. Can only agree with all the negative comments. Yes I am embarassed!
The previous reviews say it all. Rude, dirty, overpriced, and full of drug dealers. Full of fighting and trouble and best avoided.
Place is a dump, cut my foot on the dancefloor through my shoes and met the Manager Simon who was horrible no help at all. Will never go there again. Dunstable, you must be embarassed to have this place in it.

Went for a meal with a friend a couple of months ago waited 1 hour for the food then the order was wrong they had given our order to someone else. Thats what you call crap service they need to pull there finger out there back side and get a whole load of new staff
Was in here last week albeit in the afternoon and they were doing a pint og Fosters at 1.83 which is cheaper than the new Weatherspoons pub the Gary Cooper around the corner. Also, on offer was a load of buy one get one free meals which were reasonable. Down the road, you can go to the Norman King and pay 3.00 for the same drink but not the same nice decor.
pubs crap, dirty and always fights, not a safe place any more since the old manager left
No discerning beer drinker should ever go here. Avoid.
overpriced, bully bouncers , slow service , full of cheap tarts
Bored teenage bar staff, plastic food, tragic lonely pensioners and surly chav drunks - always a winner
well i used to be a member of staff under matt and graham and thay was the worst people i have worked for ever graham was ok but matt made our lifes hell and the door staff used to let under aged girls that thay liked in and even try to touch up staff so dont go there alone girls and the food i could tell you some of the stuff that happens to that if you complan

made the mistake of going into this place sober last night, dreadful lager, average prices, decent if slightly moody bar staff, and plenty of morons looking for a row or pestering the ladies. need to remember to drink more before entering again on a friday night!

Had lunch with my friend on 14th May 2007. I ordered a 'rustic' chicken & bacon sandwich, my Vegetarian friend asked for a bean burger with chips, both items seemed quite expensive for what they were and when they arrived we were right! My sandwich came with a bit of salad and when I asked the Barman if I could get some crisps, I was told they don't sell crisps. My friends chips were over done. We were hungry so we ate the food. However my friend became more annoyed at the sight of her chips so decided to complain to the Manager. I had eaten my sandwich before I remembered the description on the menu said 'rustic', but mine was like 2 slices of Mother's Pride. I told this to the Manager also. He ordered fresh chips for my friend, I refused when he asked if I wanted some, I wanted out of there. Bar staff careless & only interested in chatting to their friends who were in the bar.

i visited the pub again on friday night and the music was fab,i wonder if these people below have actually been here because their a million miles away from the truth. 2 cocktails 4 5.50 what a rip off NOT! i intend going again this sat night now i've found out the managers name is graham x . please don't take my word go see for yourself but hands off the manager.
i would just like to say what a fantastic night i had on friday, the dj had the place rockin, the door staff were polite and i take my hat off to the management team for having excellent staff that you can see enjoy their work. i would love to know who the manager is because he knows how to make you feel safe

A rip-off pub for urban South Bedfordshire charging around 2.70 pint of Fosters. Tacky and ugly in the front of the pub by the High Street, with rotting tables and ugly decor. Encountered a rude barman who insisted the beer wasn't flat when it was. Prices on a Fri/Sat night further escalate to even bigger rip-off proportions. NOT recommended, plenty of better and not to mention cheaper pubs.
Dont bother with this one rude staff, rude manager and warm beer!
Hay dose anyone know what happend to Matt.. The old assistant manager........ He really made that place what it is.. he always could make all the staff smile from the start to the end of there shift....
The Sugar Lump is ok, not bad, alright. You tend to go there cause, honestly, there's nowhere better. The nooks and crannies of yore have gone, which has lost the old pub some of its character, but then they made the pub a pain in the arse for anyone over 5ft 3 in height.
Im sorry but have all you people been to the right pub!? I thought is was a great pub. The bar staff were lovely, the doorman were gorgeous and the chef was even better! I had a great time when I visited the Sugar Loaf! I was made to feel welcome and my beer wasnt warm. Id give the Sugar Loaf a 10 /10

The Loaf is a great night out although i do agree in some part the atmosphere isn, the same as the prerefurb Loaf . The staff are young and can seem offhand on busy periods ( perhaps more mature staff need employing ) in the quieter parts of the week they are pleasant and helpfull .I think the place is trying to be too much , it doesn,t seem to have a focus , but that also means it also can,t offend anyone. The pub has always been one of the best places in dunstable it now is the best by a long way , but then we are talking DUNSTABLE !!!!

Not a bad pub, it's the biggest of all the pubs in Dunstable and is a good meeting place for a night out. The music ranges from loud rubbish in the bottom bar, to decent stuff in the top bar. Beer can be warm in the fridges (particularly Becks) and bar staff appear to over estimate their importance in life. However, the manager is particularly friendly and willing to listen to any feedback customers my have. 8 / 10

I must say I disagree, I can't say that the Sugar Loaf is my local pub, but since the refurb there is a much better atmosphere (and a lot less punch ups!) in the place, Before the ''lick of paint'' the place looked like a bomb had hit it and was well over due a ''doin' up'' The management and staff have allways been very pleasant to me although I would say that the drinks were a tad on the pricy side. but all round as Dunstable pubs go I'd say not a bad place at all. I'd give it a 7 - 10.
Pagey - 9 Mar 2004 11:26 |
Dont buy Becks from the fridge; its warm. If you try to change for a cold drink you have to pay for both and you are told its your fault because you chose it. Complain if you dare. Bar staff and manager totally ill mannered and ignorant. Outrageous behaviour.

Looks like a hotel on first entering the front door. Very expensive drinks & industry standard fast food that doesn't look anything like the menu suggests.

Total agreement with Ronald - it's all very pleasent to the eye since the refurb but the atmosphere has gone.

This used to be a great pub until it was refurbished, now its more of a restaurant with no atmosphere.

Recently tastefully refurbished trendy town centre pub. Terribly managed by a 'Dell Boy' type who must be going on early 50's but seems to dress and act like a 20 year old. Worst inexperienced DJ's I've heard in years playing the most predictable commercial tosh (when they finally take off the cheesey megamixes). Nice bar staff though.
