user reviews of Belgian Bar, Altrincham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Great selection of bottled beers - good range of English ales including Marble Dobber and Thornbridge Jaipur two excellent ales. Had some tapas as well, good. Bar PI down the road to your right is pretty good as well.

Pretty good i thought, good tapas not too noisy and loutish. I wouldn't have said it was ideally sized to bring a massive dog into though, as one patron did on Friday. Great beers, surprisingly good food (tapas). Could maybe do with more food choices other than the tapas though?

The images of this bar are from the old Le Trappiste and not the interior of the Belgian bar.

Sorry to nit pick with some of the above. The original owner of Le Trappiste Bar (Wyn Reece) moved 50 yards away and is now running the Mort Subite bar in the cellar further along Greenwood St. Le Trappiste was then taken over by Martin, who then moved it to Shaws Rd.
I feel the presence of 3 European/ Belgian bars in close proximity adds to the flavour of the Altrincham beer scene and is a good thing.
Each offers something slightly different so the best thing to do is to get the tram to Alty and find out for yourselves.
This bar has a good food offering and a cosy fireplace in the winter.

Please don't be confused, by the Belgian Bar at 40, Greenwood St. This is not Le Trappiste, Le Trappiste has moved just down the street to 18, Shaws Rd, It is Altrincham's original and by far the best Belgian Beer Cafe. They have over 150 fantastic Belgian beers, as well as over 20 English real ales. The bar operating at Le Trappiste's old site, is masquerading and trying to live off Le Trappiste's reputation, which has been built up over the years. It is the best by far, try for yourself if you've not been yet.

The previous post is spot on (apart from a slight mispelling of the name).

This bar is now called the Belgian Bar and has new owners. It is a poor (and considerably more expensive) imitation of the orignal La Trappiste.

The original owners of La Trappiste have opened La Trappe Cafe on Shaw Street Altrincham (turn right out of the old bar and it is facing you). There you will find the same warm welcome as always, great selection of reasonably priced beers and an even better atmosphere than the 'old' bar.

So if you are passing the Belgian Bar keep walking and give your support to La Trappe Cafe. THE ORIGNAL AND BEST!!!!

Belgian Bar has opened at this address now - not sure if it is the same bar with a different name or new owners?

I read in Mtero News that this place has now shut down but is hoping to reopne in a new location shortly.

Now introducing cask beers from Dunham Massey and looking to also add others from nearby microbreweries, according to latest 'Opening Times'.

Oh dear Endron! I'm surprised by your comments, did you try and speak with the owner or indeed make him aware of your problems? I'm sure he would have sorted things out for you or at least offered you an apology, if the things you say are true.

I went in last week, as i do quite often, the service and beer selection are second to none. However with such a large selection of drinks on the menu there are going to be occassions when they sell out of certain ones, due to polular demand. At least they do not advertise what they clearly don't stock, unlike some other bars in Altrincham.

I'd advise anyone to try the best bar in Alty bar none!

Good bar but terrible service. I have no idea why they offer table service if they can't provide it efficiently. I went for a special occasion and we had to book in advance.

The first round was fine but at this time they were quieter. When the second round came two of the drinks were missing with no explanation so we presumed they would follow. The drinks in question did not turn up, eventually somone came to ask us if we needed more drinks and we explained that they had not completed the round. There was no applolgy just a blank look. When the third person approached us they said that the beer in question wasn't on that night so we ordered a much more expensive alternative and waited .... and waited. Some freinds then came to join us and also ordered some drinks. We waited a further 20 minutes to still not have drinks, by this time we were all extremely sober and not very happy. We decided to leave due to the terrible service. We complained at the bar to receive yet aother blank look from another member of staff and no apology.

Dont think we'll be venturing there again and will be letting all of my friends know, hence the post here.

Great beer, great staff, it just need food and you'd never have to leave.

A great Belgian bar here in the north of England. No vertical drinking, beers served at the table in their original glasses - it's almost as good at Brugges. The range of draught Belgian beers is excellent. A little gem.
WeirdAl - 1 Nov 2006 15:10
As far as Im concerned this is the best pace for a drink (without the kids) in the south of Manchester provided you are sitting in the front room.My only gripe is that it doesnt sell a wider range of snacks.
jowise - 24 Feb 2006 17:50
I came back to Alty from the otherside of the Pennines for a visit and couldn't believe how I hd forgotten this gem. I quickly found myself considering quitting my job and moving back on a permenant basis. I'm torn :o)

Having been an avid regular at Trappiste since the start it is very pleasing to see the bar moving forward in positive ways under new ownership, but with respect to the continuing integrity of Trappiste (re. comment Aug 31st), there is no doubt that beer standards etc. are being maintained to the exceptionally high standards that we have come to expect, only a couple of weeks ago i saw the original owner assisting in line cleaning duties. A fantastic bar all round, no negativity please - Vive Le Trappiste! A must try!!!
anonymous - 15 Sep 2005 00:22
Having being a semi-regular at this bar, i feel it is my duty to announce that a change of ownership has occered since my last visit and all i can say is "WHEY-HEY" THE DIFFERENCE IS AMAZING, FOR INSTANCE THE BAR NOW SMELLS CLEAN, THE BEER TASTES BETTER (I HAVE SINCE LEARNT THE LINES ARE NOW CLEANED REGULAR) THE STAFF ARE MORE RECOGNISABLE AS THEY ALL WEAR APRONS AND CARRY TRAYS. YOU STILL NEED TO BOOK FRIDAYS AND SATURDAYS, AS AT LEAST YOUR GUARANTEED A TABLE, BUT IF YOU GO MONDAY-THURSDAY YOU STILL GET THE WARM FRIENDLY KNOWLEDGABLE WELCOME WITH-OUT THE CROWD. Give it a try, you won't be dissapointed. If you find yourself stuck for what to drink ask for either warah or rachie as they are the most knowing of all the staff there + they recommend a taster (DRAUGHT ONLY) before you order.

Superb selection of beers, waiter/waitress service is knowledgable, helpful, and not intrusive. Go on a quiet night and it's very pleasant, less fun on busy nights.
anonymous - 21 Jun 2005 17:05
Note: You don't HAVE to book a seat in advance, however it's advisable on Saturday night for example.
Nige - 7 May 2005 10:04
A pub you have to book a seat in advance for. What's all that about? Is OK if you like that sort of thing - is more of a beer tasting place than anything because of the fact you need to book a table in advance. I don't mind in a restaurant but not a pub.
AndrewC - 6 May 2005 13:43
Having visited this bar on numerous occasions i am still amazed at the the way the STAFF are treated by their customers. As customers at this bar we DO NOT have to move off our seats to purchase drinks, the waitresses take our orders and bring drinks to our table, and yet an awful lot of customers are very rude to these members of staff and i'm sorry but this isn't fair, PLEASE STOP PATRONIZING THEM. Also i have seen people leave a 20p tip on bills over 100.00, come on guys, show some respect the only time you have to move is too go to the toilet! at least leave 10% or go to Weatherspoons!!!!!!!!
anonymous - 31 Mar 2005 02:46
Ecellent, fine selection of beers, nice atmosphere and waiter/waitress serive to boot.
With this in mind, having to book a table seems a mere irrelevance.
Not the sort of place you'd want to spend your whole evening as the quality beer comes at a quality price
boddies_drinker - 3 Dec 2004 13:00
Went last night and fell in love with the place. An unsurpassed selection of Belgian beers chosen from a beer menu, table service and a wonderfully warm friendly atmosphere. Well recomended.
Geoff - 11 Oct 2004 03:36
Still fantastic.
Nige - 29 Sep 2004 22:04
Great place, great beers, just watch out for the hangover. Those beers are strong!
Andy - 14 Jun 2004 13:43
Le Trappiste has ruined me for English pubs. The Belgians make more varieties of excellent beer than anyone in the known Universe. Wayne has put together a beer list that is unprecedented anywhere in England and is to be congratulated.
Dick Price - [email protected] - 1 Jun 2004 22:25
Beeing a Belgian myself I defenetly look at this bar as the home away from home. Specialy these days with the terras outside, and the upgraded beer menu totaling around 100 beers by now and 12 on draft.
Jan - 20 May 2004 21:19
Great venue and an awesome selection of beers. Not at all expensive. The kwak is highly recommended!!
Mark - 24 Dec 2003 12:41
Nice pub, very homely and warm.
Not expensive for the belgian beers and if you did drink enough, the lap dance bar is not far...

achile - 20 Nov 2003 11:47
Oh and since they don't serve food they don't mind you bringing it in. It'd be polite to ask first though.
Nige - 15 Nov 2003 17:32
Wow, what a place. The beer menu would take quite a while to work through, and the beer I tried was out of this world. A lovely quiet place too.
Nige - 15 Nov 2003 17:30
Have a few excellent beers either side of a meal out at the excellent Jamfish restaurant nearby.
Makes for a great night out in Alty and something a bit different
boddies_drinker - 10 Oct 2003 09:27
Fantastic place - great atmosphere. Loads and loads of lovely beer to choose from - and you don’t even have to get up to go to the bar as they come and take yer order! (And also does speciality gift packs of the beers if you want to give gifts - one of which was highly approved by my dad!)
Caroline - 7 Oct 2003 07:52
It's a drinkers heaven, soooooo many beers, perfect just watch the steps after a few....
BigJapp2 - 12 Aug 2003 15:14
A Belgian cafe bar serving 9 draught Belgian beers and over 60 bottled beers. Great atmosphere and table service too! A great place!
