Sorry to nit pick with some of the above. The original owner of Le Trappiste Bar (Wyn Reece) moved 50 yards away and is now running the Mort Subite bar in the cellar further along Greenwood St. Le Trappiste was then taken over by Martin, who then moved it to Shaws Rd.
I feel the presence of 3 European/ Belgian bars in close proximity adds to the flavour of the Altrincham beer scene and is a good thing.
Each offers something slightly different so the best thing to do is to get the tram to Alty and find out for yourselves.
This bar has a good food offering and a cosy fireplace in the winter.

Mort Subite, Altrincham
This place is part of the european / belgian trio close together in ALtrincham. I have been in from the beginning. I have taken friends in and they either love it or hate it. It is a "marmite" place, as reflected in the other comments.
It has something slightly different to offer that the other 2. It is warm and cosy in the cellar in winter, but it is rather dark and this might be an issue for some when your eyesight is poor and you are trying to read the menu (like me). You can sit outside if its nice weather, but there is not much outside space.
I find the staff and Wyn the owner very pleasant and knowledgable.
I would recommend you get the tram to Alty and try all 3.
