I enjoy a pint of Marston's now and then, but a few regular guests would make for a welcome change.

That said, it's a good pub in an interesting location.

Good Marstons Pub with Pedi, Hobgoblin & another ale called Painted Lady, which im guessing is brewed by Martsons. Lovely position against the Trent & Mersey Canal next to the New Inn. Interior looked smart and recently renovated . Very busy when I visited on a Sunday tea time...

I remember that too, greyhead.

He used to sound last orders with a rubber-bulb vintage car hooter or something as I recall...

Landed here on a thursday evening, resturant night. Very busy, food was amazing Thai.Didnt hear a bad comment from all the folk eating and loving it. Liked the small rooms off the main bar.Wish people wouldnt whinge about lack of car parking ...try walking and enjoy the ales!!!!!

About 20-30 years ago was a legendary Pedi pub, with an old guy who had ran it for years, and it was always packed at weekends.Don't really like the layout now, foody orientated.Lots of seats outside but not much room inside if it starts to rain. It's also got a dirty great TV screen up.Average beer.Supped up and walked across to the New Inn.

The only good thing about this place is the fact it has smaller rooms away from the main bar where you can get a bit of privacy. Only a couple of beers on, both big Marstons ones, quality not that great. The bar lady wasn't very nice either. Won't be going back, I'll stick to the New Inn.

Times have changed and Pubs have to adapt or close but the Malt Shovel must be doing something right as its usually busy and you can't say that about enough Pubs these days. Of course if you are more interested in parking your car than drinking good beer in a vibrant atmosphere, the it's definitely not for you.

Still not going in, part of the new thinking there is 'Lets put more tables in the car park.RESULT!!
Now you cannot park unless on double yellows. Lets attract the PLOD to the fact I am in the pub!! What a no brainer.

Nice traditional canalside pub, once upon a time.
Now has 2 (yes,2) screens in it and the atmosphere has departed

The Shovel used to be a really old world pub with folk singers, morris dancers, a fire and a huge English Mastiff.

It has now been 'done up'. Quite smart inside although all the character has now gone as have the ales albeit Pedigree remains.

Friendly but some pretence and the makeover have taken away the character.

Always liked his pub since first went in about 30 years ago. Visited on Friday and the Pedigree was still spot on. However they seem to have given the place a bit of a makeover and painted over some of the old panelling etc which has been unchanged forever - vandalism in my view and I have to mark down accordingly. Traditional pub interiors (as this was) really should be better protected.

Cosy fire in winter, great location in summer right on Trent and Mersey canal...well worth seeking out

Another new landlord, more friendly and has cleaned the place up a lot. Beer is still good and go in on Saturday for a proper breakfast at best value.

Beer is always good. Recently had some ups and downs with new tenants arriving and then leaving when they decided they didn't like Derbyshire.
Can't wait for summer to sit outside by the canal

Warm, welcoming pub. Good beer, real homemade food and nice canalside seating area is great in the summer

Been back in for a pint since my complaint about food and was castigated in front of customers and staff, not impressed and will not be returning.

Excellent Pedigree, cosy, real fire and canalside as well. Highly recommended.

Nicely situated pub next to the canal, no garden but outside seating.Used this pub through ups and now downs. The beer is always good with Wolverhampton and Dudley beers, pity about recent food quality. Went back to complain and was ignored. Bit smokey and bit grubby.Short on parking.

Converted maltings with a flower-bedecked exterior alongside the Trent & Mersey canal. Characterful interior with quarry tiled floor, wood panelling, high back settles and a range of old Marston adverts. Beers from Wolves & Dudley Brewery (Banks's, Pedigree etc).
