please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
The previous reviews are now out of date as the pub has just been taken over by the owner of Drake's Restaurant, almost opposite. It reopened a few weeks ago having had a makeover. OK, this site is to comment on beer in the evening but I visited at lunchtime! 3 real ales on: Timothy Taylor's Landlord, Tillingbourne Black Troll, and Greene King IPA. I don't drink GK, I had a taste of the Black Troll, but settled for a pint of Landlord. Very refreshing if served a little cold for bitter.£4 a pint (I don't think I've had to pay that before for a pint of Landlord outside of London!) The staff were very friendly although it took them quite a time to bring salt and mayonnaise for my chips. I also had a cup of almond soufflé soup, whatever that is. Tasted fine. Don't think they will be serving pie and mash in the near future. For an evening drink and meal I imagine it would be quite comfortable. The tables are not cramped together and one area of the bar has a wood-burning stove. I visited because I live in the village but the prices are just about high enough to dissuade me from visiting regularly!

AVOID - 29th June 2013 approx. 8pm. Sign outside advertised 'real ales' but inside the only things on tap were lagers (seeming to cater for the group of loud male 'locals' dominating the bar). After opting for a bottle of white wine instead we were told that our choice from the wine list wasn't available, but an alternative was suggested - but it was warm. They didn't have any chilled wine . It's incredulous to believe that a pub can operate on the 'Fawlty Towers' business model in 2013. I can't see this place keeping its doors open for too long.

A group of ten of us, all aged above 50, decided to visit the Anchor on Ripley High Street on Sunday 23/6/13 at 19.30 hrs. The barman was unable to complete the first drink because he ran out of lemonade, we then asked what ales he had and he said that he had just sold the last available pint. We thought he must be joking but no he had no beer at all. There was no apology for this so we went to find a proper pub. Needless to say we will not be visiting this pub again

Hey! It's open again. Had a bit of a refurb and looks tidier but not all that different (a good thing IMO). Nice to see it back when so many pubs are closing for good.
Only had a quick pint, can't remember what, but it was acceptable.
It's a shame BITE doesn't start a new rating when new management turns up. These poor sods now have to try to turn a 4.4 rating from 21 people into something that reflects the true state of the pub they have pumped money into. For that reason I'm giving a 10 just to try to redress the balance a bit.

Pub closed "until further notice" and sign says lease available to rent.
Currently closed, I've been told it will reopen (by a barman at the Seven Stars) but his estimated date has long passed
Some of the reviews for this pub have clearly got it confused with the nearby Anchor at Pyrford Lock. Please check that you have the right pub before posting. The Anchor in Ripley is in the High Street, the one at Pyrford is by the canal.
Not the most inspired choice for a mid week pint. But, reasonable bar staff, good size outside courtyard and good thai food make it the best of an average bunch in Ripley. Real ale available, but more of a lager pub, especially with the thai food - which needs promoting effectively. They had no menus to take last time I was there, but it gets busy weekends. Friendly enough crowd, the usual mix of Ripley types, nothing offensive. Recommended.
I've never been here before, so I might have been lucky to have thoroughly enjoyed a couple of hours on Tuesday evening here, so I was surprised to see it rated at just 4.1 out of 10.
I loved the location next to the canal and the 'new looking' oak beam conservatory/extension, with huge glass panels was a great place to retreat to but, when it got colder.
Our meals were fine, as was the beer, the staff were attentive and those on the other side of the bar seemed friendly enough. In short, no complaints.
I would suggest giving this place a miss on a hot Sunday afternoon. It's far too popular. The queue for the bar was out of the door (for beer, not just food). We walked on to the Half Moon in Ripley and were probably served there before we would have been if we'd stayed in the queue at the Anchor. Pity.
have been back in once or twice lately and can definately confirm it has changed for the better, the thai food is spot on and the beer very good.
This is a brilliant place to get away on a sunny day for a pint and a Thai meal served with a smile and with great speed ! in a friendly atmosphere. I will always remember the Anchor with affection and am going to make an effort to get back here regularly.
Saw a live band here last saturday. had a great time. the landlord Mark and his wife were so hospitable. the Thai food excellent.beer great. atmosphere brilliant, what can I say. Been here before and was impressed then too. Quite a mix of people, had heard somewhere that the pub could be a bit of a rough house but this was before the new landlords took over and they have done a brilliant job.hope they keep it up.
have been back in recently and am very impressed! the food is still top class and the so called "undesirables" have disappeared, the patio area although small is very nice on a warm summers day,all in all well worth a visit, nice beer ,nice food ,friendly staff, also check out the jack russel that can be sometimes seen walking on the roof!!!!!!!!
not the friendliest pub i've ever been in but we did have a nice meal not sure i'd hurry back
it has a different feel to it these days more of a food orientation but the new owners are nice and make you feel welcome it still has a locals feel to it
very very busy in the nice weather but food not as good as it was - we were delivered the wrong meals - twice and the staff are all young and werent really fussed about the errors only reason to go back is the location
I had to comment after reading a couple of the reviews below. I recently popped in for lunch on my way through Ripley and was very impressed. Excellent beer on tap (TEA from the Hogs Back brewery i think) and a top notch Thai meal. And the staff were very friendly and welcoming, which is pretty rare these days. So, thumbs up.
really didnt think this old pub could get any worse,it has, full of pikeys & weirdos,i fear this is the end of the anchor unless big changes are made very soon!!!!!!!
0k not any worse but still as dull as ditch water,if you go down on a week day between 4&7 be prepared to see the same old faces, better off going to talbot.
has just changed hands we will wait and see if any better, cant be any worse surely!

I was a regular in this lovely old pub from 1997 - around 2004, not so long ago, when the landlord sold out. It was a place with a friendly open atmosphere where you could have a quiet evening talking with friends over a pint and a Thai meal in the bar/pub area. There were 2 lovely pub dogs, a few real regulars, some less regular customers, some passing trade even, and it all worked along with friendly bar staff. Since the landlord left a new noisy rough crowd (pikeys?)arrived and took the bar area over with distorted music playing loudly thru the pub system. It even affected people in the Thai restaurant area, who complained in vain. It drove many out. I believe the owner is trying to change things back to how they were, but we'll see. The Thai is top notch regardless. Shame.
A pub where inbred locals agressively challenge any 'outsider'. Ripley is full of these idiots these days, unfortunately. Even the sink estates of Guildford have friendlier pubs than Ripley. What a shame.

nice pub, nice food, get a few stool dwellers in, who seem to be part of the furniture and will still be there in 30 years(get a life for gods sake), but if you can see past them its alright

Pikeys from georgelands are the main clientele in here, thai food is nice, and pub in general is nice, just avoid when the low life who tend to hug the bar are in,
Interesting comment from the last review on here. Why should the locals be served first then? Shouldnt it be first come, first served regardless eh? Obviously the pub is run and frequented by morons by the sound of it. Always struck me as a bit of an interbred boozer.

local pub for local people, doesnt need much more said really the beer and drinks are more expensive than places in guildford and parts of london, so beware the tai restaurant is fantastic, although over priced
in regards to pervious comments, the pub is not 'full of Pikeys who hang around the bar', if u want a pub full of pikeys goto Woking and yes the bar staff usually serve the locals first.. like i said local pub for local people
the staff are under paid and work faaar to many shifts, so if ur looking at this thinking about working here.. think harder
Carlsberg don't do pubs but if they did, I wouldn't be this one.
It is a nice old fashioned boozer, one or two dodgy characters but on the whole the beer is well kept, the food is okay and the ever-changing staff are nice
This pub used to be good. Now its full of Pikeys who hang around the bar. The bar staff are generally ok, but will always serve a local before you.
Been to this pub before. Very small place and has a damp wood smell to it. Best thing about it when I went there was that it had a cash point machine in there!!! Meno looked good for Thai food but didnt have anything on it. Wouldnt visit this pub again. Better to try the 'Ship' up the road as it has better clientele. The Anchor mainly caters for the Georgelands estate.
Food ok, bar staff not the best, bitter not good
Very old fashioned pub - small inside. Bar staff are would rather talk to each other than serve but the food is nice and the lager's good - bitter is usually crap though. Friendly locals
This pub is clicky, and the service is slow the locals are intimidating don't go to this pub if you want a warm welcome

Awesome old pub with a superb Thai restaurant, excellent staff from all over globe. So if you fancy a traditional English pub setting with Thai food served by South Aficans then this is the place!. Excellent choice of beers including the locally brewed TEA (tradition english ale)
