Curlew, Bodiamback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
On the strength of the Good Beer guide, I visited this week and was disappointed to find this is a "gastro pub" with minimum lunch price of 16 for two courses. I did not enquire the range of cask ales. As the place was completely empty (but I was told there were some customers in the garden) it was simply not my kind of pub. In fact I don't think it is a pub at all - more of a rather expensive, upmarket restaurant.

Excellent food, though portions too small; a touch too arty farty, though as we were being treated I mustn't complain. The beer-Caledonian Six Nations was surprisingly good.

simply fantastic......

i found myself here at about 11 o'clock one summer day after a heavy night in the country. There was some true Withnail and I moments in the village but the pub was lovely and the staff very helpful. Lovely good, lovely old decor.

And because it is an absolutely superb pub/restaurant, easily the best for many miles, I sometimes go here just to sit in the garden with a pint of Badger Best, the whole place is sublime and the food is to die for.

Buxtedian, townvisitor - thanks for the information. I may look the place over sometime (though I'm still not much wiser re. the beer). By the way, I have a friend who was born in this establishment, of which her father was then the landlord, many years ago, when it was called The Junction.

Beer? food? it's all good at this pub, nay excellent is more apt! Waiting times for meals can be a bit of a problem but the end result is wonderful, even the Wild Mushroom at Westfield pales by comparison. Truly special.

The Curlew does indeed serve beer in the evening, but, if that is all you want, then the Curlew is probably not for you. If, on the other hand, you enjoy exquisite food, with silver, crystal, linen, log fire and a background murmur of civilised conversation, then the Curlew is hard to beat. Expensive, certainly, but a culinary experience in reassuringly comfortable surroundings. Book in advance, avoid peak times, and allow at least two - preferably three - hours for the occasion.

'Lobster sausage with tandoori foam'!!!I'm not paying 50 for that. This is Beer in the Evening - do they sell any at this place? Noone's thought to mention it so far, and I'd like to know before I venture forth.

Most excellent superior quality dining, the wine list is the finest in Sussex, the Curlew has improved immeasurably in the last few years.
Always my destination with business clients, has won me many a contract.

I agree, The Curlew is easily the best restaurant in the area, the food produced by Bob and his team is simply excellent, each menu is put together with thought and skill, every ingredient balances to make fantastic innovative dishes, it's worth every penny.

I cannot agree more with the previous contributor. This place deserves a Michellin Star. The food is adventurous but works superbly (albeit with a tendancy for foam). Produce is top quality. Expect to pay 50 per head. If this place was in London you would see a lot of press on it but down in the country, it's a little local secret.

Absolutely the best food served in any location for many miles around, not just pubs, but any food establishment, we dined on Friday in a full restaurant, the extra mature steak with hand-cut chips was outstanding as was the lobster sausage with tandoori foam, in fact all of the food was top quality as was the service and wine, I even spotted a famous pop star dining in the corner! The Curlew is an experience, not cheap but the prices are justified by the quality. The mini plate of dessert selection has to be seen to be believed, it's a work of art in itself. A few chatty locals make this place an ideal social destination. Superb.
