Visited last Sunday, taking in what I suspect most visitors do, both the Castle and the K & E S R.
Hands up, I avoided the beer as I'm not a fan of the pale summer ales, so opted for a Thatcher's Gold, you can't go wrong with that!
An excellent menu, with a wide variety, I tried the crab macaroni cheese, different but very nice!
Even had the added bonus of Morris Dancers performing in the beer garden!

It's okay - ale was drinkable though nothing special for the Hampstead prices they charge. Pretty much a pub for visitors to the nearby castle.

Called in here for for a drink en route from Bodiam Castle to the K&ESR station to catch the steam train back to Tenterden. As it was a nice sunny afternoon we sat outside in the garden. Four hand pulls; Spitfire, Master Brew, Whitstable Bay Pale and a cider. The Whitstable Bay was tip-top, but rather pricey at £3.90 a pint, but that seems to be the norm in this part of the country.
I know there is a tax differential, but how it is it that I can buy 500ml bottles of all three of these Shepherd Neame brews for less than £1.50 at most of my local super markets. How can being charged an extra £2.40 for drinking the same brews in a pub be justified?

They do a real cider here which was lovely, if rather too strong prior to visiting Bodiam Castle and climbing all those narrow spiral stairs! We sat in the garden in the sunshine and watched the distant steam train come and go on the preserved railway - idyllic.

Great garden here to sit and try and enjoy your Sheps beer, at the end of the garden a little stream , and further on a little Steam with the view of the Kent and East Sussex railway.
|
Came here on a car owners club (RX/8) meet. Food was good, it was a hot sunny day, no complaints at all.
|
Great location ... wasted.
|
Shepherd Neame pub that was closed on my Saturday lunchtime visit due to a wedding reception. Will have to try again some day.
|
Nice old traditional pub, open fire, good Shep Neame, good range of food; home-made and delicious. Children welcome. Much better bet than overcrowded, overpriced chi-chi National Trust tea room at the adjacent castle.
|
Great pub, beautiful location, food was plentiful and of high standard.Good beer from kentish brewery, will back soon.
|
Nice pub, cracking location, great service but very average beer quality.
Tried both Spitfire and Taping the Admiral and both very ho hum with the Spitfire being very tired.
|
Nice pub, nice location. Late Red Autumn ale (Sheperd Neame) went down a treat. Large beer garden area and with space for kids to let of some steam. Hit and miss with the slightly pricey food. Homemade burgers and Cheese ploughmans lovely. Sea food platter ok. Steak Ale pie was awful (a watery casserole, served in a dish covered with a small top piece of pastry).

Approached with trepidation given 1. the rating here; and 2. a venue slap bang on top of a tourist attraction usually guarantees everything except quality.
However, indolence - not fancying the slog to the better rated Curlew - prevailed and was actually quite pleasantly surprised.
Admittedly, the Canterbury Jack and Black Sheep weren't the best I've ever had; but they were certainly OK. The food was good value, coming in very large portions (if a tad bland (although nothing that a bit of seasoning couldn't sort out)) and satisfied all in our party.
The dining room was nicely appointed, and service pleasant and efficient.
The three behind the main bar worked non-stop and kept well on top of the numbers (a Father's Day Sunday afternoon); if losing track of order-to-be-served on occasion (a minor gripe).
All round a not bad experience at all, where an indifferent one had been anticipated.

Went in here whilst on a visit to the Kent & East Sussex Railway, excellent food and a nice pint of Spitfire and very friendly and helpful bar staff. Being next to the castle I should imagine this place gets very busy sometimes especially at weekends.
|
Eaten here twice recently and certainly the food, while not cheap was good quality and a smart environment in the back dining room made it civilised. I think given its proximity to Bodiam Castle you get what you'd expect i.e. no bargains but a competent family focused, well run food establishment rather than a particularly cosy and characterful place for a pint.

Average food in a nice pub, bit expensive for what it is though, middleish.
|
Arrive by steam train from Tenterden and stroll to the pub from the station. The castle to your right, the pub to your left. You cross a river just before you get there. A great way to visit a country pub.
Bar staff were very efficient even thgough it was very busy when I got there on a Saturday afternoon.
Pint of Spitfire was 2.80 and was very good.
There's a bus stop outside too, the hourly Arriva 254 service that runs from Tunbridge Wells to Hastings.

Perfect for a sunny weeknd lunch / pint. Terrace overlooking huge grass area down to the river, for kids to play on. Kent & East Sussex Railway on the other side of the river with steam trains up to Tenterden. Bodiam Castle next door. A great pub.

An OK pub in a great location. The food is pleasant enough, mostly very normal "pub fayre" though the standard can vary, it's definitely better than the catering inside the castle grounds, the beers are well kept and the welcome is good. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit though.

Great pub in a fantastic location. The pub is run by a lovley couple who welcome everyone with open arms. The pubs menu is home mad and far above the normal "pub food" and is well priced. I would give two thumbs up for this place both as a drinkers pub and a restaurant. A must go!!!!
