My digs for the night (at £159 per room but you do get towels folded in the shape of swans).
A quite down to earth bar for ramblers where the Haystacks Gold was in great condition.

Opposite the Fish Inn, the Bridge is a very different style hotel & bar with an attractive south facing garden at the rear of the pub facing the small village.
4 ales, all from the immediate local area on the hand pumps, the pumps are in 2 banks of 4 on opposite sides of the bar, one side serving the front area as you enter from the garden and the other serving the larger lounge area.
I had a pint of Tram Shed's Mowdy @ 4.0%, a decent pint but quite pricey even for a touristy area.
Stopped for a well earned pint before moving on.

We had a drink here on Saturday after a long walk with our dogs and couldnt fault it. The bar lady was really friendly and even came over and gave our dogs treats. The conniston bluebird was excellent.

An inferior range of ale to the nearby Fish although Coniston Bluebird and Aurora were still happily quaffed, this place is superior for food with a sticky toffee pudding special going down well after a fish platter (not including any inhabitants from nearby Buttermere however). As the evening wore on, locals descended with one herdsman complaining of the 2013 sheep blight and the unseasonal cold, while the European barman from the nearby Fish was showing little employer loyalty by taking a night off in here.

Good pub in grat location - perfect for a Buttermere pub crawl with er...the Fish being the other pub next door. Pub with 2 bars, one of which of was quite plush and the other more for the walkers. About 6 ales on with usually one from Marstons. Food was also available.

Our first evening here as a group of 4 was absolutely fine. the food was of a good standard, the four ales available were equally good and the service friendly. The next day as a group of twelve was a rather different tale. A quick finish up of some flapjacks we had not eaten on the hill was met with more than some distain from the barman (not the same fellow from the day before); not eating your own food in a pub is an understandable rule, to be scolded like children for doing so is downright rude. I finished my pint and went to the Fish, which I can happily reccommend. I suggest others do so until this imbecile starts treating his customers a little better. Would have scored 8 or 9, now gets a 3 from me.

An excellent pint of Yates, supped in the sunshine after a walk around the lake. The food looked OK too, but we didn't sample any - Maybe next time. Barman could do with some charisma pills though.

The Bridge is a welcoming Pub, with local beers from Hawkshead as well as Black Sheep and Theakstons Old Peculier. Expensive pint 3.20. Beware early closing winter weekday evenings if hotel is quiet. A great place to end a walk on the fells.
|
It's also a hotel with high quality (reassuringly expensive) accommodation in a pretty special place. You can view A. Wainwright's signature in the guest book for 1947, which says it all really - as a base for fellwalking, unparalleled.

Nice place with a lovely stream running by into the lake outside, and stunning views right from the doorstep. Lots of walks available that could finish here. Good selection of beers and the food looked very good, didn't try it myself. Ale served in proper pint pot- great! Expensive though, even for the Lakes.

I'd like to to the previous review that the Bridge has a useful outdoor area for rare warm sunny days. Inside there are two interconnected rooms which are generally more atmospheric than the more village-hall-like Fish.

This pretty pub and hotel is the focal point of the village of Buttermere. The bar serves local beers such as Black Sheep and the excellent Butteremere Bitter. Food is generally a cut above standard pub grub, although my friend's meal was cold and my dessert rather uninspired. An excellent place to wind down after a walk on the hills. The Fish Inn next door is also well worth a visit.
