Nice pub in quiet lane, friendly and efficient barman. Beer kept in excellent condition. Characterful surroundings.

Not bad. Nice beer (I had Harvey's Mild - excellent condition), but even nowadays 3.10 for a 3.0% beer is not a bargain. Seemed to be a lot of affluent retired people in the clientele (Sat. lunchtime) There is nothing really wrong with the place, but I had time to stay for another beer - and didn't bother. For me, it just did not inspire.

One of those "not as good as it thinks it is" pubs proving that looks can be deceiving. Beer average, food below average and grossly overpriced.

What a pretty pub in a sussex village. It took good 5 mins to read all the don`t do notices in the entrance, No boots,no dogs at certain times no children here or there. Got past that to eat. Evening meal rushed at end,not offered pudding menu or coffee. Restuarant being laid up for breakfast for B&B whilst we were eating. Mine Hosts obviously waiting for us to leave, hovering over us. The food was not good enough to suffer such treatment. Will not go again.

Visted last sunday for my mothers birthday. Did not pre-book and with a 2 year old in the group of four the staff could not be more accomodating in a busy restaurant. A lunchtime meal for 4 including deserts, drinks, and coffees coming to 60. The waitresses were very helpful arranging a child 's seat at the table in the busy dining room, nothing appeared to much to ask. The Harvey's old ale was of v.good quality and the food will only ensure we will visit again. There is something good about being in a busy village pub at 3pm on a Sunday and not wanting to leave. PS..Try the mussels in garlic sauce. It will not disappoint.

Not a pub that you'd find in passing, as it's set in a quiet street off the main road. Inside, there is a well near the entrance. The ceiling is low and there is a large fireplace. Watch out for the picture of the topless page 3 model posing in the fireplace en route to the gents! There is a separate dining area at one end of the pub. Harveys Best, Old Ale and Dark Mild were the beers on offer. Thatchers Gold was the cider. A bit more popular than some of the other places we visited. But certainly not the best.

Called in recently and very pleased to see the new landlords Paul & Gill seem to have settled in and rebuilt some of the proper local atmosphere which had been lacking under Gary. New carpet, very clean, very friendly and a really n ice place to go. If I was to be piicky I'd say the beer was a bit too chilled so not getting the best condition/flavour/aroma, but that's easil;y solved. Don't know about the food but the menu looked ok to me.

I had my staff xmas party here in mid December. There are only 6 of us in our London office and we wanted to get out of the city. We needed somewhere with accommodation and the Rose and Crown looked perfect. The staff and landlord were all very friendly and helpful. My room was fine, a little dated but clean. The landlord explained that all rooms are being refurbished and showed us the first finished one. It looked really nice and modern. Unfortunately my boss selfishly claimed this room for himself! The beer was fantastic, we had several pints to make absolutely sure. The evening meal didnt disappoint either. The food was of a very high standard and perfectly reasonably priced. The pub filled up with locals and had a really friendly atmosphere as the evening went on. The next morning we had the option of continental or cooked breakfast. The cooked was perfect to help ease my hangover. I have since been back for dinner with my girlfriend who also loved it and a colleague is planning to cycle there with some friends when the weather warms up a bit. We hope to go back soon.

Yes, we have been in a couple of times since Gary left. Sad to see him go - and Billie the dog! But the new landlords seem nice, and i'm pleased to say that the bar staff have all stayed, so it is all great. Such a nice pub, very friendly, brilliant food, and in a lovely village. We consider this pub as our local, even though we're 15 miles away - worth the drive though!
|
Has anyone out there been to this pub since Gary left in the spring?
|
Popped into the Rose and Crown on Sunday 2nd November as I was in the area. Too late for lunch but stuck around to hear The House Band with Gary the landlord singing and playing guitar. This was an outstanding afternoon, Gary and his fellow musicians are really talented and played a complete mix of tunes; rock, swing, blues, reggae and even some Disney!
During the break Gary produced a big vat of chilli and french bread which was given away for a donation to the poppy appeal, a really nice gesture.
I take my hat off to Gary and his hard working staff, who in today's economic climate manage to fill a country pub with happy customers.
Hope to visit again soon, and see the band again. Keep up the good work!

I dont actually go to weatherspoons ! I can only speak from own personal experience if you think it was good value then good for you ! I personally would not step foot in this establishment ever but if you like this pub then you are entilted your own opinion . I would say you opinion is definatley questionable !
|
I don't know what pub Jasper911 went to! I travelled from London because I'd spied this pub as being a cracker. I went with my pregant wife for my birthday lunch on 16/08 and could not have been treated better. My fish and chips was fantastic and at 9.95 was good value; the fish was so fresh I almost had to slap it/ Locals were friendly and we had a chat with the landlord/chef who was a top man.I wish this was my local and I shall definately be back again soon. Where do you usually go to Japser911, Wetherspoons??!!

Tuesday 5th August Want a clicky ' locals ' pub , full of old world charm , then look no futher then then Rose Crown , down the side alley off Burwash high street. But don't go if you are hungry because it's only locals who stand a chance of getting any grub within a reasonable time . We ordered cod and chips ( Not cheap at 9.95 each ) were told there would be a 20 mins wait at 1.50 pm . At 2.20pm ( after watching the locals get served ) we ask where lunch was, " it would sometime yet " . " They were busy " ( With locals ) . Could we have a sandwich , as we had to get a move on to be at the Beneden Hospital on time ". " The sandwich team were also " BUSY " , we could have refund , hungry we hung on and asked again at 2.35 pm . It was just coming ( They must have gone to catch the fish they certainly had the time . At 2.40 pm our lunch arrived it was hard to find the fish amongst the huge amount of batter , we had to bolt it down in 10 mins flat . They had the cheek to ask if , it was ok . Well no actually waiting 50 minutes for a pub grub lunch and then having to bolt it down is not ok I told them . The locals looked on , this did not happen to them . This Pub is a Gordon Ramsey SOS , the kitchen staff need a swift kick where it hurts and the front of house staff need to stop taking orders the people in the kitchen cannot cope with ! Definatley a pub to avoid , unless your a local . Not sure about these other reviews they must be locals themselves .

Fantastic pub. There is a varied menu and a good selection of drinks. Also an excellent covered back garden for smokers, which was perfect because it was raining when i visited! The staff were all friendly and polite. Hope to return as soon as I'm back in the area!

Just had to post how impressed I am with this pub. Not only was it a beautiful place to visit, the drinks were really well priced and though we arrived as lunch was finishing, the chef was more than happy to still get food for us. Such a welcome change to come accross such helpful staff! If only this was my local!

What a great pub - stayed here with my husband and two other couples after a wedding nearby and happened upon it by chance. What a find - lovely clean, comfortable rooms, proper traditional pub decor and great original well by front door. Food was excellent (particularly the fish and chips) and very welcoming staff. Gary (owner) was incredibly accomodating and friendly. Will DEFINITELY be coming back. Thanks Gary

Always pop in here after cricket. It is usually quiet when we arrive, but you can tell that it has a great character and is an ideal place to meet friends and chat. The landlord, the beer, and the surroundings were fine and it is definitely one to visit.
|
It is a very good pub, but strictly speaking it is not 'the only pub in Burwash'. I would say the best, but if you lived in a desperately poor inner city area the Bull, and even the Bell, would stand out as beacons; and if you ever had to dice with death by walking to the station in the publess village of Etchingham you would wish you were carrying a few more pints from any of Burwash's boozers.

We stayed at the Rose and Crown last week on our walking holiday from Redhill to Hastings. The beer was good and the food was excellent. We had wild garlic soup, with the wild garlic collected from the woods by the chef herself. For us walkers who had been smelling the herb all day this was a real delight. The double room was warm and clean.
|
Stayed at the Rose and Crown last weekend, 7th March after being recomended here. The double room was well equipped, clean, had an en suite bathroom and was only 60 per night!! Breakfast was included and was cooked and served by Gary the landlord, we chose the full English, but we could have had Smoked Salmon and Scrambled Eggs, all included in the price. Our previous nights supper was excellent and there is a great atmosphere in the bar with all the locals. This pub is well worth a visit.

Love this pub, great atmosphere nice decor. Beer well looked after, wine is very good. Nice seasonal small manageable menu. Well prepared and cooked. Thoroughly recommend it for an evening out. Negative point ,staff are very young and a bit scruffy. Landlord very attentive and professional. Keep going back, only pub in Burwash.

Popped in just before Xmas to catch up with some old mates, clearly still benefitting from inability of the Bear/Bell to get their acts together but nonetheless the food was good (though carvery veg had all but run out) and so was the beer, Gary his usual self and mates in good heart. What more do you need.
|
Made it to the Good Beer Guide at last - Congrats Gary! When's the Harvey's Old coming in then?
|
Much improved since the previous very large and utterly disastrous landlady, was it Lorna? Busy too, though many natural customers of the nearby Bell, and the Bear may return to their more favoured pubs when and if they recover from their own landlordly disasters! The beer is good, the refurb of the bar is very effective, but hate the grim dark camouflage green paint. It is all very dark. Haven't eaten, but know the food in Gary's 2 previous pubs was decent.
|
Excellent pub food. New owners took over in 2005 with a reputation for high standards of catering and you will not be dissappointed. Most weekends and Friday evenings, the restuarant is full. Good selection of local produce and innovative combinations. I would probably rate this as the best pub for food in a 10 mile radius (and this includes The White Horse in Hurst Green which is also excellent)
|
Visited 01 Apr 06 (yes, really). Dropped in after a visit to nearby Bodiam Castle. This is a Harvey's house offering 4 real ales, and what looked like most of their bottled range. We tried The Sussex Old and Armada, both were in excellent condition, and a full measure poured out. The pub is friendly, both the landlord and the barman were keen to chat. Unfortunately the kitchen was closed, but the menu looked wonderful.
If you drop by, please mention the "Christmas Goose" print to the Landlord, he'll be your best friend forever.
Well worth the visit.
