Lovely pint from Isle Of Purbeck quaffed from the selection of 4 casque mark ales, sat on a bench outside in the sun breathing in the yummy hoppy smells,7/10

Back in the area on another steam trip and was pleased to see the first brew has been done........not so pleased to find it had all gone. The second brew was taking place whilst I was there....lots of lovely aromas. As slerpy says the Yeovil was very good. Others on were from Purbeck brewery and Butcombe. Wish these guys well

The pub has a new landlord who is completely opposite to the last one.absolutely "full of beans" ,he has so many plans - brewing, marmalade ,chutney, world domination etc, etc.brewing it seems will start in a month or two, but the guy did have the sense to admit that it would take some time before he could deliver ale of an acceptable standard, good luck to him, you get nowhere without enthusiasm, he just bursts with it ! the ales that were for sale were very good indeed ,the Yeovil ale was to die for.

Visited here last Saturday whilst on a steam train from London to Weymouth and well worth the 5 minute train journey up the hill. We didn't eat but came out looked very good. The raised patio is all very new and smart like the loos and the general presentation of the pub is very wecoming. 4 ales on tap including 2 from Dorset Piddle, 1 from Butcombe and 1 from Purbeck brewery. Looking forward to the new in house brewery starting. Landlord, keep us in touch

MICRO-BREWERY IN MANUFACTURE.
We have been contacted to say that the brewery is being built to our specifications and hopefully should be ready in 4 - 6 weeks time. I feel some good times ahead with practice brewing and tasting sessions. dt, as is the name of the beer, has been trademarked and is officially displayed in the pub via its certificate. dt3 shall be a 3.8 - 3.9 % standard, quaffing ale, and dt4 a 4.1 - 4.2 % IPA. (avb's to be confirmed) I am certain that there shall be penty of 'playing around' with the odd brew to produce anything from a mild to a stout and all those inbetween, given time. Watch this space.

Thanks Latitude. I cant promise a ferret im afraid but the pub wont change to much. Slightly different layout, a lot of tidying up, and now a shortage of animals. We will try our best to accomodate as much of the feedback from the website as we have recieved, and the latest i have is that the micro brewery is scheduled for the summer. All being well we shall be open in 2 weeks time, with the official opening still arranged for Easter weekend. Hopefully we shall see you soon. Darren & Jackie.

So glad the Standard is re-opening. I look forward to using it again and the very best of luck to dazd1970 with your new venture. Please don't change it too much and recommend you get in a pub ferret!

Very sad news that this is now closed, a truly legendary pub. I wish I'd had more opportunity to support this place...
|
Yes, this cultural survivor and community facility closed yesterday. I wish the former landlord all the best for the future. I hope the new owner attempts to replace the social void that the loss of this pub will produce. I also hope the new pub will support real ale and independent brewers, as the Royal Standard did for many years.

Popped in for a pint as previous comment suggested and this is a great pub with great locals, but vvvvvery run down and dirty. Found out that the pub is NOT being turned into flats, but is going to be updated and refurbished. (It is well needed) Importantly it is going to stay as a traditional two bar pub serving great beer and soon traditional pub grub (as a local drinker informed me) - the locals are very happy the pub is staying and will reopen apparently in March 2010 - I will be back this is a great local find.

We came here after a disapointing visit to a nearby pub. On entering we found a welcoming group of locals, very chatty indeed. We both enjoyed a fine pint of handpumped butcome bitter. It is admittedly a very odd local with a really weathered/used feel but we felt that this really was a village local. Bad news though one of the local said that the site was bieng sold & it might end up bieng developed into flats!!! We hope not because it really is one of those really rare survivors & we would love to come again. John the landlord reminded us of Moonfleets Elziveer Block, one of those old fashioned pirate bearded west country. A great find.

No traditional cider on offer except Bulmers which I don't like. If it had traditional cider on I would probably come in here, as despite being a bit of a grotty hole, it had a certain charm about it. It looks like it ought to sell traditional cider! It is on a busy main road so if you do come in here watch your step on the way out.

Visited on a Sunday lunchtime. Excellent traditional pub - lovely wood panelled public bar, Butcombe Bitter in great nick.
Well worth a visit.

The only pub I know with a resident ferret! Great beer and friendly landlord. A truly quirky local!!

Rumour has it that this place is now endangered in its current form. I have always enjoyed this pub and it's loss will be a cultural loss to Weymouth and Upwey. There aren't many like these left so I recommend you get in there for a pint while you can. Your support might even help change things.

Reading the reviews I was left to wonder over Drunken Ducks assertion that he found a mere cat ! Was it just a bog standard tabby or a Meeerkat a member of the mongoose family ? This pub as you will gather is ANYTHING BUT a chain pub, if Wetherspoons , Slug@n Lettuces or Yates's are your thing you will not like this, but if you like well kept beer in quirky surroundings with half a zoo and an eccentric lanlord this is the place to be. Take care if you are a stranger as the Weymouth- Dorchester road outside is very busy during the summer months and four miles can take literally hours ! I say VIVA the real pub !

Drunken duck's description below is spot on, but to me all those things add up to a fantastic pub.
Amazing beer, shabby but beautiful traditional interior, animals, no phones, friendly folks either side of bar - this place is pretty much perfect.
The only down side is if you're not feeling sociable you do feel a bit exposed in the main bar, however you can always sit in the emptier room next door.
A 10 without doubt.

Top beer, menagerie, a bit quirky.

The main bar in this pub has been unaltered for ages. There are 3 real ales on at a time including Ringwood 49er and Butcombe. Belgian bottled beers also available. Great for a drink and a bit of conversation. Not ideal if you wish to sit and have a private chat. Can get a bit smoky. Friendly landlord. Great for animal lovers.

This pub was the worst of the three pubs I visited in Upwey. Although it is in CAMRA 2007 Good Beer Guide, whiched lived up to it insertion in the Guide. The local beer straight from the cellar was great. And there it ends. There are two Bars we first went in the Lounge - or was it a front Room? - or was it a Zoo? There was Tatty furniture cluttered Bar (we had to move a Train Set to put our Drinks on it). There was also a Mere Cat (I think)in a cage. we quickly went to the other Bar wher one other person was seated at the Bar listening to Radio Four. This Bar had a Well Worn Red carpet and Smoked Stained walls and Ceiling. With various Glasses Hanging from Hooks in the Ceiling. The walls were adorned with old Pictures and stone jars and Books. The house cat seemed well at home on a Bar Stool and I heard there was an Owl in the Rear Garden!!! Again in this small pub everyone could hear your conversation. DO NOT TAKE YOUR MOBILE PHONE HERE!! YOU ARE CHARGED 10p every time it rings!!!! If you want up to date Tourist Information steer well clear - we saw booklets from 1999 and 2003 - a WEE Bit out of date and Dusty. This pub could benifit from a good clean - new carpets and a de-cluttering. Rated 2 for the beer alone - nothing else!

Must be the smallest pub in Dorset, everybody stared when i walked in but no unpleasantness.A total locals pub but not suprising owing to it's location.Ideal for a quiet pint or chat with the friendly locals but not for a romantic liason as it's impossible to have a conversation without being heard owing to the size of the pub.

Small friendly 2 bar local. Real Ales (usually choice of 3). Landlords interests in pets, model railways, motorcycles, reflected in decor/paraphenalia. Computer for customers use. Always a good welcome and a chat when I call in.
