We came here after a disapointing visit to a nearby pub. On entering we found a welcoming group of locals, very chatty indeed. We both enjoyed a fine pint of handpumped butcome bitter. It is admittedly a very odd local with a really weathered/used feel but we felt that this really was a village local. Bad news though one of the local said that the site was bieng sold & it might end up bieng developed into flats!!! We hope not because it really is one of those really rare survivors & we would love to come again. John the landlord reminded us of Moonfleets Elziveer Block, one of those old fashioned pirate bearded west country. A great find.

We visited in the early evening A traditional pub but dont be fooled by the welcoming exterior. We felt that it was very clicky with a group of drinkers around the bar that made us feel quite unwelcome when we came in, a long silence & all of that!! There were some specials on a blackboard but it all looked dull & uninteresting. The fire looked welcoming. Dogs were obviously welcome!!! My wife felt uneasy in there so we left & went to the royal standard down the road for a drink. Shame

The Riverhouse Inn, Upwey
Back in upwey again after a few years & decided to pop in for a bevvy. there is excellent parking here for a start & room enough for about 25 cars & a great garden which must seat about 80ish. this is just as well because i came this time with a group of walkers. upwey is just great for walks along the dorset ridgeway & other beautiful country walks. 2 casks on offer (eagle ipa & ushers 1824) both good. knowledgeable barman.a lot of us enjojed crusty baguettes oor soup which was fresh & good. they do seem to offer a wide range of good local food. i still recomend this place & the nearby ship which has a new & proffessional landlord. (we popped in as we commenced our walk!!!)
Decent pub in quintesential village location.
