Really pleased to say that this pub is still fantastic. New landlord has opened a new bar. Very tastefully done. All the character has Been retained. The beer and food are a real treat.enjoy this classic country pub.

Your hopes and prayers have been answered bighands......I know that Tony and Moya will successfully care for The Gate. I last visited this pub in 1992... I've been away for too long, but I will call in next week for my first pint of Sheps in a very long time. Good luck tony and Moya....

A lovely peaceful country pub with delicious home cooked food and a beautiful beer garden by a stream. Have been here on numerous occasions with family and sampled various yummy dishes. Staff are always very friendly

After 35 years, and at the age of seventy, Chris Smith is about to retire on 31st May 2011. The Gate Inn is an iconic pub and has few equals.
For all the supporters and wellwishers this is a heavy blow. Our hopes and prayers are that Shepherd Neame find a suitable replacement and that this tradition can continue ~ but it'll be the toughest act to follow.

No till
No credit cards
No piped music
No chips

No chavs!

This is the best pub we have ever been to. We live half an hours drive but we consider this our local now. The food is completely home cooked and huge. The staff are very friendly.
Most importantly for us, they allow dogs and are very dog friendly.
In the winter, its very cosy, log fire etc. In the summer you can sit outside near the river that runs through the garden.

warning, it gets busy, there is only a bit of parking, get there early as they stop serving food at about 8 in the evening (I think) and in the summer its very busy.

Fantastic pub - what a country pub should be. Great beer, fantastic local food - a cheesy Gateburger is my idea of heaven - loads of character and a simple interior that has avoided bland brewery makeovers . Make a point of visiting - you will not be disappointed

My favourite Kent pub and one always visited when we're in the area. Always excellent Sheps served by gravity and the Black Pudding and Pickle sandwiches are to die for. Just goes to show that country pubs needn't have to struggle for a living when the landlord get's it right. A great place.

Oh dear..... Roger B was not impressed was he?
Still, even good pubs (and the Gate Inn is indeed a classic) have their off days and maybe so does Roger B? Go back Mr B, go back!
At a time when even well advertised, brightly lit, glitzy "country" pubs (AKA gastro house wine outlets) are closing down by the dozen, the Gate Inn bucks the trend handsomely. Few frills, good honest tucker and Shep's beer known far wide for being a yardstick by which to judge Faverham's finest.
I go to the Gate about once a month and it's always busy! Who says you can't
make a country pub pay!
Good on the Gate Inn - Surely one the must visit pubs in Kent!

I had been looking forward to visiting this tucked away country pub for some time given its glowing reports and high recommendations in various pub and beer guides but rarely have I been so disappointed. The pub itself is pleasant enough but there is little about the interior that sets it apart from other similarly recommended pubs. The two rooms are divided by a double sided open inglenook fire and lit by lanterns that eminate a cosy glow. The walls offer several archive local sports team photos along with other various nick nacks. It has to be said that some of the seating is amongst the most impractical I have encounteredin a pub with pews that are far too long for the room and merely serve to block everyone in (I certainly wouldnt want to be stuck in the furthest corner on a busy night if a fire broke out!). Being a cold winter evening, I didnt get a chance to experience the beer garden with its menagerie of ducks and geese but it certainly sounds like one of the better assets. The bar itself has no pumps or beer engines, the 3 Shepherd Neame ales are poured direct from the cask either on the bar or in a room behind the counter a small blackboard behind the bar will advise what is available. The Porter I had was very good (Master Brew & Spitfire were the other options). We would have stayed for more and possibly even entered the Christmas Quiz for which the locals were gathering (one of many interesting events lined up over the festive period) had it not been for what I will presume was the landlord (apologies if incorrect). With all the personality of a corpse, we were greeted with a stony silence and not a single word uttered until it came to paying and even then it was a curt six pounds (not even a please!). Presumably a graduate from the Slaughtered Lamb School of Customer Service, he made absolutely no attempt to make us feel welcome or wanted and we almost felt like we should have apologised for turning up. I arrived expecting to add to my increasing portfolio of all time favourite pubs and left half an hour later feeling like an unwanted intruder.

This really is a superb little country pub, the home cooked food is divine and so are the very well kept Sheps ales. I took my parents there for lunch the other day and they were overjoyed by the inglenook fireplace and they can't wait to go again!!

I Can't agree more with the 5th Earl. Went there again recently and had a 'Gate Megga Grill'. Wonderful. A pity it can't be Lent all year! These lagers have a place, in Spain or Aussie, but you can't beat the great British beer. Nothing like in the world. All power to the Gate and other good pubs.

A fantastic country pub selling Shepherd Neame beers. The black pudding sandwiches are legendary, and if you cannot finish said sandwich, go into the garden and the ducks will be more than happy to dispose of it.

Chris, the landlord, does not sell lager during lent!

If you like "Sheps'", and country pubs, you'll love this place.

Beautiful location just outside of the village of Chislet. Wonderful scenery with a stream with swans nearby. The food is nothing fancy but is home-cooked and very tasty. But its the beers, oh yes the wonderful well kept beers that stuck with me. Not even hand pumped, but taken straight out of the barrel. Pure nectar! Good old fashioned pub atmosphere with Quizzes, Runs, Dominoes and outside pastimes such as Soft ball, Rugby, cricket, & Walks.
