What a lovely pub this is. No TV, no gambling machines and no piped music. It's what a pub should be, a place to sell good ale.
Good selection of Sam Smith's beers, Lagers and spirits. Very cheap too.
If you hanker after what pubs used to be like and should be like then give it a visit. The staff are very nice and knowledgeable.

If you ever want to see what a pub looked like 100 years ago, pay a visit! A wonderfully preserved local boozer. It has all its origional fixtures and fittings...including a heated brass foot rail around the bar. Being Sam Smiths, it carries all its own brands, which are very reasonably priced. Very friendly pub, only downside is no draft!

Thanks very much for the welcome correction, Andy. Good news for a change.

Lads Really sorry. False alarming the Sam Smiths! I got it mixed up with the pub further down toward the Broadway!!
|
How very sad: this used to be one of the best in the area.

Closed. Another one bites the dust. Now a horrific looking hostel
Gutted.

Used this pub a couple of times recently, not a local I popped in whilst in the area.I have to say it does have some old world charm about it,the landlady was friendly, the price of a pint very reasonable, the locals friendly and the ale very drinkable.Yes I liked it.

What a great find! A traditional backstreet London boozer just off the beaten track. Feels a bit like stepping back in time. With most of the Deptford pubs being turned into bookies or Hipster hangouts, and New Cross catering for the rich kid student crowd, this pub is a breath of fresh air.
The young couple running the pub are really lovely - you can't beat a good bit of northern friendliness, which London is often lacking. The locals are chatty and always seem to be enjoying themselves.
The beer is good and tastes as you would expect of a Sam Smith's pint. Nice to have northern prices dahn sarf too! I agree with a previous comment that it's nice to be able to hear yourself think. How novel to be able to hold a conversation with someone without needing to shout or use sign language. We'll be back!

As iam at goldsmiths uni good cheap beer is essential and the royal george is one of the best at this, offering larger from £2.25 a pint the beer is light and refreshing Company is excellent and pool table upstairs is like brand new
The stout is a very good and nutty equivalent to Guinness and nice and strong
Will definitely be going back Exerelent work keep it up

Some people think that if you have one bad moment that you're rubbish forever. Sort yourself out. I've been drinking in this pub for a few years now and although it's had many a different landlord every now and then I get a poor pint but to abuse a person behind their back is very shallow and probably why they drink alone. So well done billy you know who you are:(

Hello just comment regarding the fedback from jaquet 1, that was not said and you complained and you was offered a pint of something else I which you was rude and I do not tolerate rude people 2, the beer in my pub has only ever had 1 complaint and that is yourself every drink sold in this pub is to the best quality and have doubled the trade from previous managers which speaks the truth in its self I would say to come back and have a pint on my me but as your feedback was a personal attack then that wont be happening any time soon
Thx for the made up feedback jaquet keep up the good work

Abysmal. Every time I've been in here there seems to be a different guvnor, as though its the Sam Smiths equivalent of being sent to Siberia for being effing useless. This evening, however, was the limit. The tubby Man U shirted oaf who now seems in charge served me with a cloudy pint of lager (!), his explanation being: "its made with hops". I shit you not. The pint in question was Pure Brewed, which I've been drinking for years and know to be clear as a bell. It smelt rank. My experience of pub work leads me to conclude either 1. the pipes were filthy (fat Man U oaf reckons he cleaned them himself) 2. pipes weren't cleaned competently and still contained cleaning fluid (possible considering that FMUO was at the helm) 3. (my conclusion) the keg was well out of date. Either way, an utter disgrace. Avoid like the plague. They make beer with hops, apparently.

Very much a throwback to an old fashoned London street corner, it is a pub basically serving people of a certain age from the local area but welcoming enough and unthreatening (one of the regulars had a great laugh when I walked into the Ladies by mistake). The place is clean and tidy but is very basic - the dartboard is as exciting as the entertainment goes, although I did notice some board games behind the bar and some locals were definatly enjoying their game of cards! It is nice have a drink in a pub where you hear yourself think these days and I also liked the displays of old cigarette cads on the walls. The pub has a fair selection of the Sam Smith's range, but unfortunatly all on keg. I had a pint of Stout, which was like a slightly drier version of Draught Guinness and a couple of bottles of Nut Brown Ale which were top notch, but I did notice that the bottled beers were considerably more expensive than the reasonably priced keg beers. My friend raved about the quality of the wheat beer so I think we'll be popping in again when passing.

I wasnt expecting to find a Sam Smiths pub here after walking through the estates from New Cross and I have to say that it was a welcome surprise. The barman was very friendly and was getting involved with conversation with the locals which is rare for chain pubs in London. The other clientele was a mix of local residents and Sam Smith fans who had made the trek to have a pint in a relaxed no frills atmosphere.
The pub itself is very basic and I think can be best described as looking like an early 1960s terraced house living room. There are three areas around the bar that are barely partitioned off from each other with some old screens and one of these areas houses a dartboard.
There is a poster up on the wall that was advertising a meat raffle every Sunday and a darts knockout every Tuesday. There is also a list of sandwiches that are available, which is as far as this pub goes on the food front.
I love all of this wallowing in the past when pubs used to be boozers and I have to say that this is one of my favourite SS pubs, even though there is no OBB on hand pump.

I went in here once, was served once. It did not seem that the landlord was too interested in serving me a second pint, and I have not been back.
|
why is there a dog with a wart on its nose behind the bar

One of the best pubs in Deptford, no question about it. Great beer (if you dont like Sam Smiths then tough) - the bottled Nut Brown is the nectar of the Gods. Great surroundings - quiet (no crap over noisy juke boxes), just right for conversation, walls lined with books and curios. A real fire on freezing nights and lovely bar staff who bother to take care of you (supplying food when the drinking gets extended, and taxis when it gets late. Plenty of locals, all a bit crazy but friendly as anything. Some of the cooler 'New Deptfordians' starting to find their way here too, but no attitude. Just a pub the way a pub should be Just shows you need to need to cautious taking too much notice of the reviews posted here. On the other hand we want to keep it a secret - so stay away!

Not sure how "extremely well kept" a pub is when your beer mat sticks to the table and your shoes stick to the floor. Reminded me of the Manx boozers my dad used to drag me round, basically God's waiting room for sclerotic old widowers and their mangy mutts. Cheap booze, but it's Sam Smith's, so the stout's vinegar. One for the seasoned drinker (but not the dressed-up girlfriend I took here for a looksee).

Used to be great when they had bands playing. That was before Samuel Smiths management ordered them not to have any music live or not (what a stick in the mud)! Now it's a decent pub (although a bit dull) that serves the cheapest beer in New Cross/Deptford. In the good old days (the 90's) it even had a pub theatre upstairs.
|
A rare gem tucked away in the backstreets of Deptford. A proper old traditional pub that is extremely well kept.
It's a Sam Smiths pub so that means, no music, no TV just good beer at good prices and good conversation.
The new management have really turned the place around and whilst it is still very much a locals pub all manner of people are made to feel welcome and enjoy the cosy atmosphere.
Definitely worth seeking out if you are in the area.
