Pretty country pub focused on food but also serving a good selection of real ales. Three bars allow access to the bar from three separate rooms. Small river runs through the garden, very picturesque, worth a try.

Fabulous Pub ! Had a great few days visiting IOW and this was the best pub we found - and we tried a few ! The food was amazingly tasty especially the pie, and plenty of choice on the menu and special board. Staff were very friendly and cheery, beer was very good and pub was very cosy. Could not have asked for more.

This is a first class pub make no mistake about it.
There were 16 of us on a long weekend break celebrating a friend's 50th at a farm nearby ( which was also amazing!) We had lunch on the first day and were delighted with the friendliness of the staff, the quality of the food and excellent beers - Goddards Fuggle Dee Dum! We chose home-made chicken, ham and leek pie, scampi (14 pieces!) and Crayfish Risotto which was served quickly and with a smile in front of a roaring coal fire. Lager drinkers were happy with the San Miguel or Peroni and bitter drinkers with Goddards F Dee Dum, Ringwood 49er, Tribute, Doombar etc etc.
We walked to the pub again the next day and enjoyed more beers and some sat by the fire and others outside in the pretty gardens.
On sunday evening 12 of us went down for dinner and even though it was getting close to 9pm we were served freshly cooked "proper chef" food with a smile. We rearranged a few tables to seat us all together and that was fine too. The food again was top drawer;- roast beef with all the trimmings, venison, fish pie, and another risotto. The beers flowed we laughed and chatted to a few locals ( ken etc??). A great night. A great pub. Thank you.10 out of 10.

The pub is lovely and the staff nice, the beer is great and the food totaly unpalatable. We spent 40 on over cooked, dry cajun chicken, and a blue cheese and leek lasagne with zero blue cheese and 100 awful, neither of us could finish it. We have eaten here 3 times and each time has been bad. Pity as a drinks are great and the pub its lovely its just the food thats awful.

I have a friend who is due to visit the island & asked for my pub recommendations. I have just noted the recent comments on the Crown & as I take notice of serious reviews it will sadly no longer figure among my top ten.

Nice traditional old pub, totally spoiled by the current owners who seem to want to change it into some trendy venue which is not possible in Shorwell. Two weeks ago I went there for a meal, fillet steak medium rare, came out medium to well done and when I complained and asked if I could have a medium rare steak within 10 minutes (as partner was half way through his meal) I was told no as they had to make meals in order and I would have to wait until other customers had been served - there were two other customers in the pub! Went there tonight at 10.05pm for a nightcap to find it closed and an elderly gentleman behind the door telling me the pub closed at 10pm. On a Friday!!!! No wonder no one in the village likes the new owners. Having lived in Shorwell for 10 years and being a regular of this pub when the previous owners were in place I would suggest that if you want good service, a decent meal and a pub that is open until 11pm, drive a couple of miles further down the road and go to the Three Bishops. The current owners of the Crown may want to encourage tourists to visit, however they have very little time for their "bread and butter" clients - ie the locals!

The pub itself is a beautiful building and the staff very friendly but all this appears to be wasted on the owners, who we witnessed treating the staff rather cruely and disrespectfully. We were then treated to an hour long session of the landlady sitting at the bar and basically gossiping and complaining about this and that person which really spoilt our evening out. It isn't what customers want to hear and made me rather annoyed that I was putting money in the pocket of such a person! We certainly won't be returning.

This was our second visit to the Crown at Shorwell. I can honestly say that this pub now rates well above the 6/10 it has been credited with. I think a lot of those reviews relate to previous landlords & their performance. Our walking group love the Crown. It still retains the old pub feel & creates a lovely ambience. I hope she will not mind me mentioning this, but the lady with the limp is a real treasure, always cheerful & helpful. The staff are very friendly, the beer is top class & the food is v.good & we did not have to wait long for it to arrive. One of my top 3 Isle of Wight pubs. I give it an 8 rating.

Food appeared very quickly on our visit -- early Saturday evening, late September.
Very friendly staff. Very good local Goddards bitter.
An excellent pub overall.

Very popular pub with a large garden and trout pond. We have not been for a while because we got bored with always having to wait at least 45 minutes for our food. Despite the pub having changed hands, we regret to say that the same problem remains.
The menu is a list of pub favourites with an appropriately short specials board and, when the food does arrive, is always worthwhile
Good selection of beer. The staff are very friendly
Recommended but prepare for the wait

Dropped in here whilst on walking holiday and although not in Good Beer Guide, it turned out to be the best pub all week and we came back several times. At last we found a local brew, Goddards Bitter, which was excellent. Food ok but like all West Wight area overpriced.

Very good real ale selection and very well kept. However don't go there to eat. The food was dry and badly served. I complained (nicely!) and it was ignored. The barstaff can at times be very ignorant. Dogs ARE allowed in the pub and gardens. But I dont think they would even eat there!

May 2008 visit - dogs allowed again it seems. Our 1st visit, picturesque/historic olde worlde type pub, fairly empty the wednesday eve we visited so lacked atmosphere. Manager/host seemed absent, very young staff were helpful. Sadly the reputation for great food wasn't upheld, the fancy menu looks inviting but perhaps too complex for basic pub kitchen staff.

Lovely pub, pleasant gardens. Food good, especially IOW crab sandwiches - yum. Definitely doggies in there when we went in, so not sure if rules have changed again?

One of the loveliest pub gardens on the island with stream, trout, ducks and doves, and great to sit in it on a nice summer's day with a good pint of beer and a snack. Heard it's now up for sale, which is a shame as Mike and Sally have done a good job over the years.

Good ale, well kept. Good guvnor in Mike. Now very 'family orientated' and losing its real charm. The holding company has now barred all dogs so - goodby!.
