The Crown Inn, Shorwell

Nice traditional old pub, totally spoiled by the current owners who seem to want to change it into some trendy venue which is not possible in Shorwell. Two weeks ago I went there for a meal, fillet steak medium rare, came out medium to well done and when I complained and asked if I could have a medium rare steak within 10 minutes (as partner was half way through his meal) I was told no as they had to make meals in order and I would have to wait until other customers had been served - there were two other customers in the pub! Went there tonight at 10.05pm for a nightcap to find it closed and an elderly gentleman behind the door telling me the pub closed at 10pm. On a Friday!!!! No wonder no one in the village likes the new owners. Having lived in Shorwell for 10 years and being a regular of this pub when the previous owners were in place I would suggest that if you want good service, a decent meal and a pub that is open until 11pm, drive a couple of miles further down the road and go to the Three Bishops. The current owners of the Crown may want to encourage tourists to visit, however they have very little time for their "bread and butter" clients - ie the locals!
