Now open - its lost the Sirloin - just the Hope.
Handsome looking pub, with the large bow front window the standout feature.
Inside, its single room, high ceiling, bare floorboards.
Ropey pint of Tribute was a let down.

Went there this morning - was CLOSED. Doesn't look like reopening.

Rolled in here at 630am for a swift pint after a ramble round nearby Smithfield meat market. Interesting Victorian décor and high ceiling, a few white-coated porters having a drink after their early morning shift. Place has seen better days obviously but that isn't the point - these places deserve a visit for rarity and atmosphere alone. Currently £3.90 Fosters.

Was relieved to find this boozer the other lunchtime as I'd wandered around Farringdon past countless gastropub type places (hate them), cafes, bars, in the search of a pub I could go to without being surrounded by people eating smelly lunches. (Usually tourist wallies eating fish and chips in the sweltering heat of July 2013) The Hope did the trick and ticks the box as an old skool London boozer. You wouldn't go there for a night out but it's a good daytime pub.

Popped in for a pint, the whole place stank of pee.. the beer was expensive and of SPOONS quality. You could sit outside. Overall I would avoid, the food looked aged and was served on paperplates.. welcome to London

Three handpumps with Youngs ordinary and two others I can't remember. The pint was good and met a few workers that morning who bought me a shot of tequila at 10:00 am. Nice place to rub elbows though not at all fancy. It is always good to be able to get a beer in the morning after a long flight from the States.

A dump

I used to come here for a full English + Guinness @ 0730, but that was around fifteen years ago. It was very good at that time. It's a shame it's gone downhill, which would seem to be the case.
|
I meet a friend for lunch here about once a month.
Yes it's scruffy and wastes it's potential, but you can always get a seat and the beer is fine.
Very nice pork sandwiches with a sausage on the side.

Average small one roomed bar (though not many straight angles). Had a reasonable pint of Youngs. Not such a bad pub though then again nothing special either.

As the previous contributor points out, this pub is actually called "The Hope" with "The Sirloin" being a separate restaurant upstairs.
A very attractive exterior with a fine curved glass frontage leads to a traditional wood panelled interior with some fine tiling, a mosaic flooring and a burgundy painted ceiling. Note in particular the fine etched glass in the doors - "Public Bar" - and "Saloon Bar" - telling us that this was formerly a two roomed pub. Seating consists of wooden benches and tables.
On my recent evening visit, despite ( or perhaps because of ?) screening the England v Hungary game at Wembley high up in one corner of the pub, the pub was virtually deserted with the only two other customers occupying stools on the pavement outside.
The Young's "smile" logo is displayed outside on the frontage, but I don't think this has ever been a Young's house. On my visit, a reasonable pint of Young's Ordinary - 3.30p - was enjoyed. Shepherd Neame Master Brew was also on. The two foreign bar staff seemed rather bored and disinterested and there was no sign of anyone who seemed to be in charge or running things.
I don't think this pub is as bad as previous contributors make out, but it's not down for an early revisit.

The correctly named "The Hope", as another reviewer points out, is a wasted opportunity. With its fantastic faade, rich original features, and decent location this pub would be very successful if it was well run. It's not.
Just go inside to have a look, I can guarantee you'll be disappointed. I used regularly visit The Hope as it was half way between my work and a friend's. It's a deeply depressing place: pokey, uncomfortable, grubby and dingy. Hacking locals and untrained staff with a penchant for European techno add to the general malaise of this place.
The Lost Hope serves some ropey ale (no choice usually) - Young's Bitter is a decent pint usually, but I never quite trust it here. Can't vouch for the food - I've never been brave enough.
Being run into the ground for offices/flats I imagine.
Scrapes 2 stars for the potential and loses one of those for wasting it so totally.

Bit of a pit this place really - the impressive glass facade conceals a single room with dark wood on the lower walls and upper area and ceiling painted red.
The room is fairly spartan with benches and tables round the outside and slightly too loud music playing. Despite this apparently being a Youngs pub there was only Youngs bitter on offer.
There are a number of superior pubs in the immediate vicinity so I can't really recommend this one.

One of the nicest glass frontages I've seen, georgeous curved glass etc, lovely tile work in side too. But a real dump apart from that. Real dump.

Absolutely dreadful meal on the first floor. Met up with a colleague that we hadn't seen for ages. Fillet steak was ''off'' so we all ordered sirloin steak. Two medium-well, the rest of us medium-rare. Mine came up three quarters fat and the rest very very well done......a friend asked for a replacement steak. This also came up very very well done.......a travesty if you like your steak medium rare or with any taste at all.......and at 14 this wasn't coming cheap. Surly staff, terrible food (although the salad was fresh).....I would give minus stars if I could....!

Very average pub. I've been here just twice but my experience yesterday means I doubt if I will go back (there are better places to go). Asked the bar man if the pub had cranberry juice. He did not fully understand me, so my partner asked the question again. Finally, he said 'yes' so we ordered a pint and a vodka and cranberry juice. Pint was OK but tasted of chemicals. The V&Cj turned out to be a shot of vodka in a tall glass which was then filled to the top with...... blackcurrant cordial! After much discussion we finally managed to get a vodka and cranberry juice but it really shouldn't be this problematic. Plus they were playing techno-drum-and-base music very loud. This really isn't a drum and base kinda place. Very disappointed indeed, I was.

Overpriced but beer in good condition. Small in size and cosy when there aren't too many poeple in. Clean but rather uninspiring interior.
|
Tried it again after a long gap, attracted by the "Under New Management" banner. Still overpriced, still mediocre.
|
Whenever I have been in there the Young's bitter has been good - just the thing to wash down an excellent full English breakfast in the upstairs restaurant. For lunch, a freshly made hot pork sandwich with a sausage and mustard on the side takes some beating. It's a shame that the interior of the bar is so uninspiring having lost all its original Victorian features, but it's worth a visit for the good food.
|
This is not a Youngs pub but it does serve the best pint of Youngs Bitter I have sampled for many years. It was kept in superb condition as was the Archers Red Robin. If you like meat the beef sandwiches at the bar are good value but we had a good lunch at the upstairs restaurant which serves home cooking at sensible prices including a mixed grill. The Hope has a friendly atmosphere and in my view is the best in the area.
|
Young's pub with a guest ale. There's a novelty. Decent enough downstairs. Wouldn't mind getting a breakfast here someday.

RUN DOWN???? Clerkenwell?
anonymous - 5 Jun 2006 20:55 |
Stopped in here for a quick half one lunchtime. Scruffy, but not in a good way. The whole area is run down and frankly smells. It was a warm day and the proximity to a meat market probablt doesn't help.
|
Just smashed a morning pint of Young's in here. Good pint, but at 2.90 is should be.

Used to go in here once a year for a big breakfast before annual outing to Brighton with FB and the gang. Food was always fab (huge portions of everything) - staff always helpful and the Guinness (all I can drink at 7 in the morning) was always good.
Hope (no pun intended) that it hasn't gone downhill - perhaps I shall visit again at a more civilized time.
8/10 on previous experiences

This pub is not called the Hope and Sirloin. It is called simply "the Hope". It is owned by the Young's brewery and has a restaurant upstairs called the Sirloin.
I find it a fairly unwelcoming place, serving as it does a very poor selection of beers (Youngs and Youngs Special real ales, standard fizzy pop lagers, tiny fridge with nothing much in it).
However it does open at 7am or something like that for market workers, like a couple of other pubs round here.

3 for a pint of Archers. Expensive drinks, for average boozer with middling atmosphere.
