A small, characterful and welcoming traditional brick-built village pub with an interesting choice of six to eight ales. Pleasantly quirky interior and a fairly mixed over 30s client group. Beer is kept in very good order - the Adnams Southwold was in fine condition, and the local Wibblers IPA was good too, although unrecognisable as an IPA.

Absolutely fantastic Mighty Oak beers in here, in perfect condition. Great place, small but with bags of character.

Still one of the finest real pubs in the area (and it's still my local!) Other pubs pretend to serve real ale but don't really know enough about the art of keeping and serving a live product so as to give the customer a consistently top notch pint. You won't find any issues of quality in this pub.
The Wheaty is a proper pub with an eclectic mix of real people from all walks of life who enjoy the art of conversation over a good pint without using the F word in every sentence. Sadly a declining phenomenon as more true pubs like this close to be replaced by characterless Pubcos serving a limited choice of poorly kept beer at high prices.

Great pub. Regularly travel from Chelmsford for an evening there. Tony & Barbara know how to run a pub.

This is a little gem of a pub with an excellent selection of real ales properly kept and served - including Mighty Oak Oscar Wilde Mild on tap every day ! It's my local, so I would be biased, but I've had beer from far and wide and this is without doubt a great real ale pub. Some people complained when Greene King IPA went but to be honest there are much better IPAs out there.
The pub is tiny - but that's part of its charm. It's definitely a locals pub but visitors are also made to feel welcome. There is folk music on every third Friday of the month. Well behaved doggy customers are welcome.

Popped in whilst trying pubs in writtle and was very impressed, good selection of ale, the landlord knows his stuff and the beer tastes superb, only downsides are it looks bit run down inside and out, and it's a bit small, but do not let this put you off, I am in love with this pub and will be back next time in a The area

Lovely little village pub, although located on a busy street area. Went in here during the V Festival period in 2009, and on a hot Summers Day, on the way to the festival, was a lovely stop off point. Quite small, and dunno if would work at all times, but friendly staff and nice selection of ales on tap, its a nice stop off point.

I thought the White Hart was the best pub in 2009.

Excellent good old-fashioned boozer. Fully deserves the Essex Pub of the Year title. Great selecetion of real ales and friendly landlady. I agree with EssexBoy's comments below!!

Very small pub split into two parts.

A wonderful traditional village pub with a wide range of real ales. Recently voted Essex CAMRA Pub of the Year. Landlord Tony and wife Barbara have worked hard over the past 11 years to build up a loyal local following and while the menus somewhat limited it is good value.

Friendly Grays owned traditional village pub. It is split into two small bars, Lounge and public type saloon. Two hand pulls in the lounge and the other four in the public bar. On Sunday's visit Mighty Oak Oscar Wilde & Maldon Gold, Sharps Doom Bar, Farmers a Drop of Nelsons Blood, Adnams Bitter, Abbott with Wibblers Darker Mild available from cellar. All beer that we tasted was in good form with very reasonable pricing, a number of beers available at 2.40 a pint. A TV was showing the live Chelsea v Blackburn game whilst we were there. It was my personal favourite pub of the day and can see why Chelmsford made it their pub of the year. I heard yesterday that they are now the Essex Pub of the Year. Congratulations to Tony and Barbara for a well deserved win.

A great little pub just off the Green. Two very small bars serving two regular beers with Maldon Gold and Burntwood Bitter as guests. No musak, just peace and quiet and good beer.A great traditional pub.Give this one a try.You will not be disappointed.
|
A tiny pub but great licensees and IPA Green King beer. Try one of their cheese or ham sandwiches in french bread.......bet you can't eat two!! Located just off of the village green it is an ideal place for a Sunday visit with the family and then feed the ducks on the pond.
|
A proper pub with two tiny bars, good beer, usually including a mild. I'm sure it still is owned by Grays. A real locals pub, but visitors are always welcomed.

A small Pub in the village of Writtle Essex. It was a Grays Pub but now is owned by Green King. It serves a great pint of IPA, Abbott Ale etc. A gentlemans pub with occasional Irish Music Sunday lunchtime freebies and frendly conversation make this feel like home (but its smaller).
