GBG 2020 Entry. Sort of a Micro Pub on an epic scale - former bank in a shopping centre turned into a multi room, multi level pub.

8 Handpulls and plenty of Belgian Bottles. Nice atmosphere - full, but not cramped that you couldn't get a seat on a Saturday evening.

Plenty to admire - would have liked to have stayed longer.

"Et in Arcadia Ego !" Usually on a Friday, actually. In spite of the weird queueing system at the bar, the echoing acoustics upstairs, and the sometimes lackadaisical serivice from the friendly staff, this pub would still be a veritable Earthly Paradise - even if Joseph Goebbels himself (aka 'The Poison Dwarf') drank here ! Especially now that the Leeds Brewery tap has been rededicated to Ilkley Brewery instead.

Arcadia has created a bit of a problem for itself with the extension. It's now twice the size but the bar is the same size as it was before. The queues at the bar on a Friday and Saturday night can be extensive (10-15 minutes to get served). They have started to do some table service I think to mitigate the problem. It's still the best ale pub in Headingley by a country mile though.

The extension is now in place, both upstairs and downstairs.

Great beer, also does food. Only problem today was they were short of bar staff, so long queues at the bar.

As has been said looks nothing special from the outside but worth going in. Usually 4 or 5 cask ales at the bar and some contintental beers, friendly staff and customers and a nice chilled atmosphere. Can get quite full but they plan to extend into next door.

3 Years since my last review so here's an update:

Still a great selection of real ales and continental beers to tempt the connoisseur, ranging in ABV from less the 4 to 10.5; all kept well and served by friendly staff.
Free daily papers, books and games are available if you want to entertain yourselves whilst sampling the delights on offer and if you want to use your laptop, there is free wi-fi too.
Possible expansion into next door, if the license is granted, which will provide more seating and a disabled loo. (summer 2009)

Far better than you'd expect from the exterior or location - but as good as you'd expect for a Market Hall pub. Great beer and a friendly atmosphere.

Lovely little place! Great selection of obscure booze - I had a pint of the 8% Kwak, expensive, but tasty! The rest of the group I was with had excellent beer too. Well worth a visit.

Great selection of beers. Staff have always been good with me so not sure what the other reviewers are talking about. You can always ask to sample one of the beers out if you're not sure about it. Does get busy at times and it's not the best pub to stand around in. Still my preferred headingley boozer though.

Odd place, tucked away in a shopping arcade.

Great choice of beer no doubt about that, but it is a bit pricey and the design of the bar means there are few places to stand when you inevitably can't get a seat.

Worth a visit though.

I agree with the comment above re service. I was given a sour, undrinkable pint - but rather than receive an apology and another pint I was treated like an idiot ("No one else has complained, its supposed to taste like that etc etc"). only after much arguing did I get a very surly refund.
I certainly wont go here again.

Don't be put off by the exterior, lovely beer and friendly service!

Made my first visit on Saturday night and was very impressed with the quality of the beer and friendliness of the staff. A bit pricey if you're a lager drinker, but then I'm tempted to say serves you right ;)
Will definitely be returning.

Very rude staff. Gets ridiculously busy at times and its impossible to get near the bar because of the design of the pub. Can't fault the range here but not cheap either.

This is a Market Town Tavern. All of the ones I have been in are intelligently run, friendly and with very high beer standards. This one is well up to the mark, but small, with more seats and the toilets up lots of stairs. Will be going again, but probably not at peak times.

Former shop in the Arndale centre - good range of beer for the discerning quaffer - easily the best beer in the area

fantastic, relaxed yet often packed little bar which serves an excellent variety of real ales which are constantly changing. A good escape from the mainstream headingly crowd.

The only place in Headingley where you can get quality real ale.

Best bar in Leeds, excellent selection of beer and well kept. Welcoming atmosphere, not in the slightest bit pretentious as wine bars of this calibre so often are. The staff really know their product and are always friendly and welcoming. The food is great, especially the homemade soups-yummy!

beer selection and condition excellent. Food good. Service friendly and mostly efficient but far too few staff at busy times.

An oasis of real ale, NO SMOKING, no bandits and no kids where dogs are welcome. As a local resident, I was pleased when this small bar opened; It serves a small but very tasty menue up to 8pm.
Could do with some soft furnishings to deaden the sound.

Fancy dress is not allowed so misses a lot of the looney students on the Run; Hooray!

It would only appear "stuck up" to people who like/are used to noisy, student, keg pubs; each to their own, I say.

Stuck up, to small

By far the best alehouse before/after the rugby or cricket.
TonyTaff - 2 Feb 2006 19:09
The real ale here is great - a wide selection that is usually kept well. Unfortunately the pub is now far too popular with passing Otley Runners and discerning students and gets horribly busy from about 8pm until closing on Friday and Saturday nights. The lack of soft furnishings means that what was once a hubbub of conversation has become far too loud. Beware the aircon - it's usually boiling hot upstairs and freezing cold downstairs. Some of the bar staff are excellent and pull a lovely pint, with some all you get is a long queue and a pint of head. I've been going to the pub since it opened and I had great hopes of it becoming my "local" - I love the idea of no music and no smoking. I wonder if they can make it bigger?

A veritable oasis for beer lovers in a predominantly student pub area. Part of Market Town Taverns chain of no-smoking pubs (8 of them). 5-6 regularly changing real ales plus wide range of bottled beers from around the world. Great atmosphere with no music - just the hubbub of conversation.
