Wednesday night on a snowy February. Had a fair few people in towards closing time. Cheap, although the OBB was oxidised. Pool table, pub quiz machine, darts. Fairly good really. 7/10

I remember when this one was a derelict, near-ruin c 1974. (I was living opposite!) I'm not sure if it was originally a pub, though. However, it was very sympathetically restored c 1980 and has a local reputation for good (if trad) food in generous portions. Never seems particularly busy - which is a GOOD thing in York! Has had a pretty reasonable quiz from time to time.

Good Sam Smiths pub (cheap beer, but what happened to the very strong "Ayingerbrau" ?) A good stop off point on the way into town for those coming from Heworth / Huntington Road.

Worth a visit, same as last year - excellent pint of Sam Smiths

Beer is cheap but if your a lager drinker you have the choice of Alpine or....erm.....Alpine, which is a poor lager as well.
Darts and pool available and does a regular quiz.
Bar staff are very friendly and we ended up having a good session there, even though we were meant to move on after a quick pint or 2, and ended up dispelling the view they had that Southerners can't drink!

Excellent pint of Sam Smiths, racing memorabilia of the outstanding racehorse Brigadier Gerard outstanding, clean and roomy, frendly staff - definitely worth a visit

Called in here on my tour of the outskirts of the town but went into the front bar this time, very spacey not many in beer was as good as before and Sam Smiths is cheap. Sat on a very busy corner staff chatty big outside area woth a visit.

Named after one of the most famous racehorses of the last century who, ironically, lost his only race at York ! Just outside the city walls and amazingly grockle free- since it is off the tourist route. Pleasant lounge. Cheap beer. What more can you ask for ? Conviviality I suppose, well you can't have everything !

Great pint of Sam Smiths (1.31).Sat in the large lounge.Dark wood & leather upholstery which never fails to look clean & shiny. Tends to be older chaps having a drink during the day.The retired military types would appreciate the cleanliness.

A nice big Smauel Smiths pub just outside the centre of York, pleasant enough, cheap as always, and easy to walk to from town
