This place came highly recommended and I'm not sure why or how. It could be great, but it's just like a Wetherspoons - and with half the atmosphere. We both just quickly supped our beers and made a quick exit.

Visited this pub at the weekend (very busy) decent atmosphere and there was a decent selection of ales on offer. I sampled a pint of Rooster and it was lovely. I only have one complaint, its another of those pubs where the gents are upstairs !! it drives me mad having to go up 3 flights of stairs for a wee....

Pleasent pub quick service nice pint of Nicholson's cornish dark ale 3 pints for under a tenner

Went in on a mid week lunchtime. Good selection of ales and a good meal. Staff very polite and helpful. Recommended.

I visited The Cross Keys only yesterday evening ( 10/07/2011) The only thing I can say positively is the barmaid/waitress/didnt want to be there had gorgeous red hair. The food was diabolical, unless you like cold plates, tough cheap cut of rump steal. (My husbands dish) and I chose cod wrapped in rubber salmon served with "Crushed Potatoes" and frezzing cols asparagus. The atmosphere of the place was somewhat simliar to the moon. Staff were disinterested and made a feeble attempt to create some ambience by struggling to light a tealoght half way through our diabolical meal. Thats it basically :)

Re-opened yesterday following a major refurbishment. It looks a lot better than it was and here's the best bit.....it's now a real aler !!!
Very kind of the new management to offer free main courses by application yesterday. The rump steak was excellent!! A decent selection of ales too, so this goes back at last on the ones to visit in York list.

Alright for a quick pint as a break from shopping, but I wouldn't want to spend any length of time there.
|
I must admit my wife and I felt very welcome here - nice view from the rear of the establishment - nice pint also
|
Quite a large pub but not a great choice of ales.
|
Used to be a great pub before they "opened out and knocked through" about twenty-five years ago. It had a wonderful little snug with a good set of old "Spy" cartoons and a gaudy print of the battle of Colenso. I'd love to know what happened to them!
|
Stopped for a meal which was okay but we couldn't sit in our original choice of seat as it was bleeding freezing due to the doors being wide open so people could nip out for a fag. Other people seemed to agree as one half of the room was empty.
|
Bargain priced food - not the best you'd find, but certainly well worth the money!
Two cask ales on, Black Sheep and Deuchars IPA. I tried the Black Sheep and it was okay.
Not the best pub in the area but can be handy for the food.

An open sewer would attract tourists and students in this stunning location, but until that becomes available you'll have to make do with this. Tawdry chain boozer filled with chavs in identikit stripey shirts come the evening, and camera clutching tourists by day. Warm and weak lager, and fried fayre galore. Avoid.

Popped in for lunch while visiting York. This pub had the TV on and music playing at the same time, which seems to be the norm now days. The meal was enjoyable but nothing special and we had a choice of two 'real ales', Deuchars IPA & a guest beer. Not a bad pub for a quick pint and a spot of lunch.

I had a pint of beer in here, and it was very malty. Too many horrible stinky students.
|
Decent enough pub, no-smoking area, reasonably priced food. A fair selection of beers - sadly, football orientated pub, although there was a tv in non-smoking area showing other sports.
Accomodation reasonable - basic room, but it was en suite. Fair English breakfast, but no black pudding !!
|
The bar staff have all been lobotomised and take great joy in turning the jukebox off at bang on eleven just to nark you off after you've put 2 quid in. Personality free losers the lot of them DURR !!!
|
Having just recently had a much needed refurbishment this place has just gotten both better and worse - worse as the pool tables been taken out of there but better as the decor's a lot better.
The beers cheap, staff are always friendly and friendly people are always there.
|
Very popular with students & alcoholics.
|
Pleasant enough city centre pub, doing the usual drink deals, reasonable food, and has football on usually.
