Everything a pub should be. Great beer, excellent food and steeped in history.

You wont find a better pint of Bass anywhere else!

Excellent! I was expecting to be underwhelmed because I'd heard so many glowing reports but they were justified. Very comfortable, good staff and the food and drinks were very well kept and tasty. Not cheap but good value considering the quality!

I had a lovel meal here with great service. The pub was very busy but the food was quick and fresh - I'd certainly come back!!

Unfortunately, customer service was pretty much non-existent - unless you were from the village. They all made it clear that we (a group of four classical musicians who were performing that evening in the village church) were not welcome. It was obvious that bar staff and patrons were not happy about having 'strangers' in the town. Being black, I actually had entire families (not just the kids) staring at me. Interesting reaction, considering two of the bar staff were Polish.
On the other hand, The meal I had was the best food that I have tasted in a very long time and the drinks were at proper village prices ie about half of London prices. Just make sure you've got a mate in the village before you arrive!

Beautiful pints of Sharps Eden and Everards Sunchaser in fine surroundings. The meal in the restautant was good, service excellent, but probably not quite up to the very high prices charged.

I have to agree with all the 'PLUS' comments on here. My girlfriend suggested a Sunday afternoon drive out and so we ended up in Hornden on the Hill. She parked up and was taken away by the quaintness off the place and the views and then we entered the pub. What a smasher! The food looked good and plentyful with a full house of eaters and then the bar full again with admirers of the fine mead. I think the ale is excellent and well kept/served and the service well managed. A VERY ENJOYABLE PLACE AND WE WILL BE BACK. I never give 10 ratings so 9 is as good as it gets.

One of the nicest pubs I've ever been to. The beer is very well kept, and sell a good range of real ales, and always seem to have a Crouch Vale on tap. The food is very special, but pricey. However, it's the best food in the area, and is served with a wonderful choice of wine, and very friendly host.

Food is superb, I have eaten at the Bell on a number of occasions and not been let down once. The beer is well kept and the staff always willing to help. The Jewel of the Estuary!

If you want a nice cosy night out to a traditional pub then this is the place to be. The bell is a coaching inn with wooden beams and an open fire place. There is not a slot machine or pool table in sight.
The food is very special and nothing like boring pub grub. A nice starter would set you back 10 but well worth it.
There is a beer garden which is lovely in summer overlooking countryside views. I reccommend anyone that likes traditional pubs and good food to go to the Bell. They have a line of hot cross buns hanging from one of the wooden beams that someone puts up each year. Dates back to about 1900's.
