user reviews of the Farmers Inn, West Hatch

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Although its called the Farmers Inn, it is doubtful if shit covered wellingtons would be very welcome here. It all very chic, low settees with big cushions, that sort of thing (getting a bit old hat nowadays)
As alluded to before the owners of this pub really dont have much of a clue, with the many bar staff giving a running commentry on their inability to do their jobs which isnt very reassuring. The choice of ales consisted of the ubiquitous Tribute together with Proper Job. Also had pumps badged as selling Otter and Butcombe, but these not available. The Proper job wasnt worth drinking and I couldnt be bothered with the Tribute. Its not cheap either.
Mainly a food pub I guess, but if they cant get the simple things right, I doubt if the food would be much good.
Not worth going to, if you are in the area, better off going to the Greyhound or Nags Head.

Needless to say that since the previous posting this pub went out of business (in Feb 2011). A pity really as its a nice building in pleasant surroundings. The latest news is that it is re opening and reverting to its former name "the Farmers Arms". The bad news is that the new owners havent any experience whatsoever in running a pub or restaurant. To disguise this shortcoming they have appointed a "Marketting and publicity officer" OMG LOL.
Could be interesting to visit for a laugh, but I think I'll wait and see before spending my money there, after all, I would think twice about visiting a dentinst who had no previous experience of dentistry; wouldn't you?

Tiniest portions I have ever seen. So overpriced I cant believe it. Twice now we have been disappointed. Last July Friday evening dinner the service was so slow it was unbelievable. This July Saturday lunchtime was not at all busy and nothing has changed since last July.

Not a bad pub at all, good atmosphere & reasonable food and service.
The beer isn't as good as it could be, but not a bad pub all things considered.

Good country pub in the middle of nowhere but well worth seeking out - friendly staff, OK beers and good food.

Not been for a while but know many who have and it has an excellent reputation.

Ignore the comment below about beer quality - there is noproblem with it.

Not somewhere to go just for a drink though as it's an eating pub so no free un-boked seats. Also, i've always felt the bar is too low to comfortably lean on.

Good drink? The ales is foul.
Another pub that seems to think it a good idea to have the casks on stillages behind the bar; kept at room temperature.
There is a good reason for pubs having chilled cellars: beer keeps better in them.
Try using them for what they were meant for!
Food ok

It is called the Farmers "Inn" now, not arms, as of the past year-ish.

The food is restaurant style, as in large plate, small-ish amount of food in the middle - not hearty and pub-like.

The beer is very good and served out of the tap on the barrel.

Unless you know immediate area very well, be prepared to get lost as the West Hatch/Slough Green area (the pub is actually in Slough Green, not West hatch) is a warren of deep lanes that all look alike!!

wow, where to begin? the food was just wonderfull, and nicely presented with a smile, the real ale was just the right temp. The landlord and lady were just brilliant hosts, a big thanks for such a great evening

We had dinner on a weekday. I found the food very good: salmon tartare starter, goose on a bed of celeriac.
They had 4 barrels of real ale behind the bar and the service was friendly. It did seem tending more towards restaurant, but they did have barstools at the bar and an area that seemed more for drinking than dining so I would still stop in for a drinks only evening.

Incidentally this pub has just been re-named the "Farmers Inn" - a cardinal sin in my opinion.

food okish..well presented, but standard fare and really quite over priced.the landlady seemed reallysnooty, offhand and seemed to look down her nose at everyone which is really ironic as we were dining with a rather wealthy and famous politician! wouldn't go there again, sorry chaps.

This pub is a bit restauranty now. The decor (wood floor, plain, largely bare walls) and the opne-plan nature of the place means it's very noisy when busy, it can be hard to hear the people you are with speak. Beer is good though, however it's not an easy place to go just for a drink, certainly on weekends.

Having told my long lost cousin and his wife from Hungerford that this was a good place for Sunday lunch, I booked a table. The main course arrived too late and conversation was made almost impossibe by a screaming babe in arms - from the other side of the room! My complaint fell on deaf ears. Shame, as the food, wine list and service was really good.
Thanks Nige.
