This has just had yet another re-fit and has opened again this week. It is now unashamedly a Gastro-pub with prices to match and an array of foreign lagers on tap. In some parts of the pub, the paint smell from the re-fit was still very strong. Most traces of the former establishment have been taken away and it is filled with new tables and chairs. And it is VERY expensive: A pint, a cup of coffee, a bowl of soup and one chicken and bacon sandwich came to £22.50, service not included. (Chips were included with the sandwich.) And the waiters were still trying to get their routines right. Having come to this pub off and on for many years, I think that this incarnation has ended my visiting. It is probably intended to be "discovered" by Londoners as a "lovely little country place" that "serves decent food", but it is no longer a place to come to if you just want a pint and an ordinary snack (at prices working people can afford). There are other places near that which still remain "pubs" and not wannabe restaurants. 4/10

We went to this pub for Sunday lunch last weekend. What was supposed to be a delicious roast with my family turned into a disater. For 10.95 you would expect to get a decent plate of food. Unfortunately this was not the case. I orderd the roast beef. Bad mistake. What I received on my plate were a few colourless vegetables and two 1cm slabs of something covered in Bisto. The beef tasted horrible, was tough as old boots and after two attempts to swallow some I called the waitress over to tell her. My exact words were "Could you please have a chat to the chef about my beef. It's very tough and I feel I need a chainsaw to cut it. 25 seconds later my plate was back in front of me with a message from the chef..."That's how it comes!" I was shocked and didn't eat anymore of it. Why would I want to!? When we asked for the bill I asked to speak to the manager. He wasn't there apparently so a different waitress asked me what was up. I told her that I wasn't happy with the beef, yet they put the plate back in front of me and told me "that's how it comes." Her answer to me was that no one else had complained! Can you believe that?
Seriously...If you are thinking of eating here then please reconsider. Bad food, terrible staff and a "chef" that has no idea what good food is. I would have been ebarrassed to serve that meat to a dog, yet alone charge good money for it.

Bitterly disappointed. Has it changed hands since last reviews?

Smarmy welcome. Decent beer. Truly ABYSMAL food.

Never going back again.

Enjoyed a lovely couple of pints of St Edmunds beer to help wash down the lunchtime meal. Two parts to the pub-from the front entrance turn right for public bar, mostly locals drinking and bar meals, where they also allow well-behaved dogs and left for the smarter lounge bar, for dining. Burgers sourced from Crumps the village butchers. Good-sized garden. Handy for Ashwell Springs, museum.

Great stop off for trips to Cambridge (I live in London). The new manager Charlotte is really friendly and helpful. Food has always been top notch, and the beer is served at the right temperature - which is my measure of a great pub.

I used to live in the village until a few years ago and decided to revisit the Tuns on a recent stopover with friends. I am delighted to report that the pub still retains its local feel and continues to produce very decent traditional pub food at decent prices. My personal tipple, Abbott Ale, was in top class condition and my wife seemed perfectly happy with her Chianti. The management hasnt changed for many years and their reputation for employing vivacious, friendly and efficient bar-staff has not diminished.

Rumours are rife that the present management is looking to move on ( confirmed on the Greene King website ) but interesting times could be ahead. A couple of well connected and trustworthy villagers tell me that the Michelin starred culinary alchemist, Heston Blumenthal, of Fat Duck fame, has been spotted in the Tuns with business advisors sampling the food and ambiance. It is no secret in the trade that he has been looking for a suitable inn where he can try out new recipes and menus without the pressure of Michelin ratings.

So, it may be Steak Pie today could it be Bacon and Egg Ice Cream tomorrow? Watch this space.

I called in with my son on the way to Cambridge. The Abbot IPA was well kept and very drinkable. The guest ale was Bath Gem - a little expensive at 2.95, but a pleasant drink.

Choice of meal a little limited, but they were quickly served, large portions (I had the goulash) and very good.

Pub was quiet and well furnished. The Staff were all very friendly indeed.

Drop in sometime, you'll not be disappointed.

Nothing is too much trouble - staff are always unstressed and helpful - reliable, tasty homemade food. Pate and gravadlax are both execptional!

Excellent pub, I often go there on my way home from shopping in Cambridge. Excellent steak and kidney pie and chips. Guinness can be variable though. Landlady is very competent.

Real public bar with normal people, restaurant/lounge bar with reps and travelling couples. Good food, striking barmaid, competent beer. Real village.
