please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Popped in here after a walk round the watercress meadows of Alresford. Three real ales on tap. Otter, Goodens Gold and Good Old Boy (can't remember the brewer). Had the Good Old Boy and Otter, and sat in the sun trap of a garden out the back by the small lake. The food people were eating looked good, but the prices were a little on the high side for me. Altogether a pleasant experience. Would come again.

New management ( from late June 2013 ) has recruited great staff and improved service as a result.

The food has a simpler menu with daily specials in addition and I can recommend the massive fish and chips!

The new owner believes in putting in the effort to ensure success and has created a pleasant happy atmosphere for customers and staff.

Efficient and friendly service, good beer with well prepared and affordable food in a great atmosphere with a garden overlooking the lake and associated wildfowl - can't be too many places with all these facilities!

First visit to the Globe for several years. Huge improvement, and more upmarket now.
Service: Very helpful and friendly. Lots of attention to detail - even get proper napkins with the food !
Beer: Just had the Doombar - excellent
Food: very good; beautifully presented. Roast lamb followed by Bread & butter Pudding. Top quality and delicious. Varied menu.
Ambience: Lovely.
Sunday newspapers provided
Would defintitely reccommend for both Beer and Food, and the staff make a real effort.

The Globe is back on absolutely top form under its enthusiastic new management, who have taken the radical approach of creating a welcoming atmosphere and being interested in and responsive to customers' opinions. It's been subtly refurbished to restore its former warm and relaxed ambience, and the staff are incredibly keen and friendly. Great menu of freshly prepared well-priced dishes using local produce - not a main course over 10. As a local who has seen the Globe struggle and decline (since the glory days of Lynn... ;-( ) it's terrific to see it doing so well again.

"CaptainDave" I think I can safely say they have sorted it out. What a fabulous pub this is. Location and beer garden is absoloutely Idyllic and the Ales and service was that good on the saturday I visited whilst out walking that we went back on the Sunday with my family for lunch and the quality of the food and service did not disappoint. I would recommend this place to anyone. Definately the pick of the Pubs in Alresford.
nivramkram - 8 Aug 2011 11:43
hope it has sorted itself out since last year at the watercress festival when they only had 2 staff behind the bar who kept disappearing out to the kitchen, leaving it 6 deep at the bar.

A great location for a pub with a nice looking lake right outside - unfortunately plagued by midges in the evening! Moving inside to continue drinking, there was a great range of reading material and friendly staff who made us feel very welcome. Good range of beer for all tastes - not just ale drinkers. The food looked a little pretentious so not my 'cup of tea', but probably a decent bet for a special evening out. Still retains some charm despite being 'modernised' inside.

Such a refreshing change. Clean, light and airy. Staff seemed pleased to see us and offered brilliant service. We had Sunday roast which was probably one of the best ones I've ever tasted. Amazing value in a town where most things seem to be over priced. Will be back.

Not sure where everyone else has been.
Clean seats outside by the lake, just had a really nice lunch there. Good pint of GFB. Food was good and not overpriced. Certainly not microwaved!

Inside is not oldy worldy but maintains the charm of the old building so it's not gloomy inside.

Really liked it. Going back next week...
Eddster - 9 Jul 2010 15:48
Quiet on a hot Saturday afternoon. A choice of beers including TT Landlord, Doombar and Hopback GFB. The latter was in decent condition if a tad hazy. They must get in to the habit of cleaning the duck crap off the seats and tables outside. Sitting in the lakeside garden is supposed to be this pub's main selling point.
GazzaTheBeerMan - 29 Jun 2010 09:39
re-opened, as much atmosphere as the moon, overpriced microwaved food, bye bye
littlecon - 6 May 2010 09:05
Oh dear. First visit the other day to check out the changes. I didn't think I would ever say this but it was much better before, and that's not saying much! Cheap renovation, no atmosphere, closed sunday evenings, beer (Doom Bar) was off. This is why so many pubs are closing, people think it is easy and they don't have to try and think the money will come rolling in - this place will be closed again soon as there is no marketing/profile and it does not seem like the owners give a toss. Great shame - with the right direction this place should be a gold mine.
ILBuono - 29 Mar 2010 10:30
I spoke to the new landlady yesterday - the pub opens on Tuesday 19th Jan!!

Hope to pay my first visit later this week - food , drink and service should be good
eclipsesundayman - 18 Jan 2010 09:16
Apparently it is reopening soon (rumours said it was opening for Christmas but it hasn't happened yet).
jamesperrett - 2 Jan 2010 22:38
If you don't use it you lose it - especially in this day and age. This is really sad news that it is closed as it was a great pub serving excellent real ales and excellent food.
alefellowwellmet - 24 Nov 2009 22:51
still closed
littlecon - 23 Nov 2009 20:33
I have always liked this pub even if it has become a bit more of a restaurant in recent years. The beer is good and there is usually a warm welcome. I understand that as of 06/09 it is being refurbished.
Reg_Prescott - 29 Jun 2009 13:38
Always liked this pub have been told it`s closed is that the case ????
ThePilgrim - 14 Jun 2009 09:56
Service generally polite, although bit funny atmosphere if not eating. Expensive beer and food, food average and overpriced fro what it is. I have had unusually high number of dud pints at this pub.
ILBuono - 24 Oct 2008 15:27
This is more of a Restarant than a pub and the dearest pint in the village
bjbrummiejohn - 29 Sep 2008 08:20
A surprise 10% service charge appeared on the bill total with a statement that one can opt out. So tipping is not compulsory, so long as you don't mind an embarrassing end to a pleasant evening. The pre-dinner pints included an extra 10% as well becuase they were on the tab.
Long live the opt in system, which makes me feel much better when I leave a tip.

What a fantastic find. Not immediately obvious I saw this while driving past and thought we would give a try. We were lucky as we were in early - it gets quite full at lunchtime at the weekends, it's reputation must have spread. The staff were very friendly and found us a table after some juggling. The food was first class and we were told that they have just got a new chef and the menu is changed regularly so always something new to try.

I can whole heartedly recommend this pub - the only thing which was not a 10/10 was the weather whcih meant that eating in the garden overlooking the lake and the very friendly ducks will have to wait until next time - which there will certainly be!
Bon_viveur - 14 Jul 2008 19:50
Visited here yesterday lunchtime with my wife. Excellent Itchen Godfather on handpump - also Brakspear, Ringwood & London Pride available. Good fresh local fish and very hospitable reception. Park in the main square and walk to the pub as it is impossible to park outside. We will definitely return.
zeitlin - 1 Apr 2008 13:18
Excellent, simple food. Best steak, chips and pepper sauce outside of France and very good prices. A fine selection of real ales and good wines. Superb service from staff who all know how to treat the customer right. A great place to dine before heading up into town to the Horse and Groom for an afternoons serious drinking.
arferjob - 30 Mar 2008 23:41
What a wonderful mothers day. My husband took me to the Globe Good beer ( he said) good wine (I said) and excellant food served by friendly staff. So what bif the terrace room is a little scruffy , as mentioned by other people , no one made us sit in there. Anyway it was locked up for the winter its probably ok in the summer though. We will definately visit again and reccomend the place to others.
oopsie - 18 Mar 2008 15:28
I visited the pub on the off chance with my two children, aged 6 and 3, and we were made to feel very welcome. The children were very excited to be able to order off the "grown up" menu as the pub offered half portions on every meal. No turkey twizzlres here! We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves the atmosphere was good, with friendly staff and resonable prices. I would certainly visit again.
Matad - 23 Feb 2008 16:16
We called in today and found the place quiet(Thursday lunch),the beer was fine and the menu had a good selection on it shame that most of it was not availible, what we did have though was very good the service was the same and friendly.
I can see what grubbytech ment about the awful marguee (if you can call it that)it looks cheap and very nasty i would not sit under the thing eating just in case something dropped in my food.
But would call again poss. not if it was busy.7/10
Beersupper - 7 Feb 2008 17:57
Don't be too harsh on it, at least it's not an antique shop or w@nky boutique
alebear - 19 Dec 2007 18:50
Glad to hear a few people have had a good experience here. My view is that this place is typical of the Alresford attitude and prices - not really interested in repeat business and pricy and pretentious for what it is.
meurglys_iv - 17 Dec 2007 23:12
Although I had read the somewhat mixed reviews posted on the site I was in Alresford with the family and decided to give The Globe a try. The result, a truly remarkable meal in the restaurant area. Warm ,friendly and attentive staff and a real child friendly experience. The landlord provided fresh bread for the children to feed the ducks on the lake before and after the meal which kept them happy and contented. Prices not unreasonable considering the standard of the food on offer and a fine selection of beers and lagers.
scrumface - 14 Dec 2007 14:14
One of the most pretentious pubs I have ever had the misfortune to visit. Lackadaisical service and poor, expensive quality of both food and beer - doubtless in a place like Alresford where people only visit once they think they can get away with it. At least there's a bit of local beer now, but as the comment below suggests if you're doing the Watercress Line Alton has far more potential. A shame because the location is idyllic and could be a real destination if management had ever heard of customer service.
anonymous - 28 Jul 2007 17:58
Dining area HAH! What a joke! It's a mouldy smelling half a marquee that's been there almost as long a the pub! The only good thing about this pub is watching the geese come into roost & the bats over the lake at sunset. Go up the road to the Horse & Groom or better yet if you like your ale go up to the Bell hotel.
grubbytech - 28 May 2007 18:39
Nice pub for that post-walk pint, but not too keen on the food or service. Was full of hoorays on our visit, braying for food and Pimms, so it was a bit noisy. Itchen Valley good stuff. Took steam train to Railway Arms (Triple fff) at Alton; excellent jolly.
Ale_Argonaut - 29 Jan 2007 10:58
Fantastic private garden looking over a large tranquil pond to sup some high quality Itchen Valley ales. You have to take your pint for a little walk out of the pub, down a side road and through a gate to get to it.
SteveinLondon - 30 Oct 2006 00:47
Desperately inadequate customer service which sadly overshadows the quality of the food, home-cooked and hand-prepared or otherwise.

We were told that food would take about half an hour to be served, but ended up waiting just under 2 hours for our mains to arrive; this was justified by snippy staff as 'you've already had your starters guys, which puts you lower on the priority list than people who just ordered a main course.'

When we were at the arm-gnawing stage my father finally complained again about the speed of the service, at which point two quite unspectacular portions of fish and chips were frisbeed onto our table- I'd hardly say they were worth the wait. We were also berated by a waitress for having no place marker to indicate the number of our table; this was the same waitress who had taken our place marker away about an hour earlier.

A lovely setting, average gastro-pub grub but let down by the arrogant attitude of the owner (who made a distinctly anti-Scottish jibe to my visiting father) and the pompous tone of the waiting staff- and of course the enormous delay in being served. The experience put a dampner on an otherwise lovely day.

Lovely pub, log fires roaring up the chimneys, nice beer, fine wine - BUT - I wouldn't eat here again. Had to sit in the Dining area, which was cold, and for which we were charged a 'Service charge'. The food took it's time to appear, was lukewarm on arrival, and the portions were barely adequate. Maybe the Chefs should sing less and concentrate more on the food! Will definitely go back in the summer to see the birdlife by the pond.
dorsetknob - 2 Mar 2006 18:17
Popped back in last friday, very busy at lunchtime (good to see) and we hadn't booked, but the barmaid let us have a table anyway. Good service, usually i've been ushered out the door if i haven't booked at a posh pub. The food although expensive was top notch, very nice but being critical i would have been happy to see more food for the money, but the experince was pleasant. Was dodging a few tumbleweeds about an hour and a half after we had been there but on a workday it was expected. This place will be even better in the summer when i can eat in the garden next to the lake. Will be visiting again.
ginmarinthedon - 26 Feb 2006 18:36
Visited today and was surprised when they called time at 2.15pm- especially when the other pubs in Alresford were open. Obviously don't need the money. This place seemed to have potential. As said before cosy is the best way to describe it. The big pond/lake out the back certainly provides a decent back drop to enjoy your pimms and scones- a lot of Range Rovers and tweed jackets around, but i am more than willing to give this place another shot- just not on a sunday especially when the staff seemed more interested in ushering us out the door than allowing us to finish our drinks.
ginmarinthedon - 22 Jan 2006 19:39
Good pub but perhaps a little posh. I've never eaten here, it's all very expensive. But they serve good beer and in cosy surrondings. In summer sit in the beer garden for a fabulous view over Alresford Pond. Perhaps more restauranty than pub-y but still a nice spot for a quiet pint.
