Lloyds No. 1 Bar in the centre of Cheltenham. It had a good selection of ales and ciders. I was looking forward to seeing what they had as part of their cider festival. The range was good. Although one of the ciders that was advertised as available could not be found. Ales were Thornbridge Jaipur, Salopian Shropshire Gold, Wychwood Hobgoblin Gold, Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best, North Cotswold Shaglayer, Brewsters Aromantica & Sadlers Hop Bomb. Ciders that were actually available were Westons Old Rosie, Mr Whiteheads Apples & Pears, Bottle Kicking Cider Company Raspberry & Pomegranate & Perrys Somerset Redstreak. An above average branch of Wetherspoons.

Typical spoons pub. You know you're going to get ok food at a good price. Surprisingly quiet on a rainy saturday lunchtime - no queue at the bar and food came really quickly. Burgers and mixed grill were all good. Didn't sample the beer (although there was a good range) as had consumed a fair quantity the night before - the coffee was good though! Toilets clean and the general pub area was in good condition with interesting decor

Not a bad pub, however...
I agree with Porkling that the tables at the front having gone is a shame; it was an excellent place to watch the rats try to get through the front door from the stream nearby (no joke, not at all).
The arrogant little manager who refuses to give his name when you want to make a complaint is still there.

Cheltenhams only Wetherspoons provides almost the only place in the town where a pint can be bought at a sensible price, quite a nicely designed pub, large having been a car showroom years ago, comfortable inside with a small garden to the rear overlooking a park, for some reason all the tables and chairs at the front have gone which is a shame as I quite enjoyed sitting with a pint and watching the world go by. Never the less excellent for those who want decent food and well served beer at a realistic price.

Late review from November. Had a couple of beers from festival and were not the best I have had. Not the best kept Wetherspoons I have been to either.
|
This was our first pub on Saturday's Cheltenham visit as it was the only one open at 10:45. Our pre match group all decided to have a breakfast here with our beer. Only one lad was serving so there was a wait to get served. There are quite a number of hand pumps here however the six available were duplicated on another six. There was also another bank of two or three hand pumps with three further duplicate pump clips. After seeing three pump clips of Hung Drawn and Portered we were rather annoyed to be told that it was not available. I know a few Wetherspoons pubs that have 'Available Soon' surrounds on beer that is not yet ready. Surely if a pub does not have these, why is the pump clip not turned round? This is false advertising and really annoys customers when you think you have chosen a beer especially after waiting to get served. It is even more annoying when you order the beer for friends sitting some way away from the bar.

Not the worst Spoons I have been to, but still remains like most others...grumpy staff, uncleaned tables, sticky floors and very very dark inside...not sure why they cant invest in some lighting. OK for the evenings, but during the daytime, your eyes have to adjust to the especially dark interior. OK seating areas, some couches, stools, tables to eat at etc, but usually dirty. Always intimdating when walking in as there are stand-at tables where the local older men stand at, so girls, dont go in wearing a skirt! Just make sure you have ID even if you're 30....my mates ALWAYS get ID'ed no matter how old. Food terrible, no surprised there, but their selection of beverages is, as usual, unbeatble in terms of choice and price.

Nice well kept ale and beer patio for those warm summer nights 2 quaff the stuff, 8/10
|
It is true that the pub is dirty, the staff unfriendly and in the evening is full of bottle drinking chavs out for a fight. But in the day time it is great for cheap beer and sometimes a cheap curry.

Generally a bad Wetherspoons. Have had trouble in the past when a barstaff could not work the Strongbow tap, could not find the wine glassess, and charged for the wrong wine (all in the one serving). The manager (whose fault it was, the girl had clearly been dropped in it without any training) would not identify himself by name so had to describe him as the small bald man when I complained to head office. Service is always poor but the drinks are cheap so I drop in sometimes and stay if there is no queue at the bar. Food not too good. Oh, and the other day there was a large rat running aroung the front patio, scattering customers sat there. Then it tried to get through the front door. I kid you not!

My wife and I visited last week on a two day trip to Cheltenham. We have probably been in 50 Wetherspoons over the past 8 years and this is certainly among the very worst. The beer was adequate, the place was dirty and those in the smoking section in the rear seemed as they would fit comfortably in the opium den scene in Edwin Drood. It seems as if it is now a Lloyds which might account for its deterioration since we were last there about four years ago. Go to The Swan (on Albion) -- an excellent place.

Go for good, cheap breakfast. Take advantage of cheap drinks during the day, but get out before 7pm when it gets crowded and rough(for Cheltenham). They do have some quality drinks.

The last comment is a strange one. I had always assumed that it was wetherspoons policy NOT to check I.D's or to go into the trading area to check that all is ok. I had always assumed that Mr Martin, or whoever's in charge of these shit holes wanted them to be the way they are. Now I read a comment from someone who has worked for them for eight years who criticises them for sloppy standards. Does he feel guilty or ashamed for having worked for this outfit, or did he get the sack for trying to improve on company standards?

This is probably the worst wetherspoons i have ever visited in 10 years( and i worked 8 years for them) been in twice allthough i couldnt belive how bad it was the first time i felt that i had to check it out again! The customers in here on the two nights that i visited where not been managed at all. It was blatently full of under 18 year olds but no one was id`ing customers. in the first hour of being there i never once saw a member of staff walk around the bar area to check everything was ok. really when a pub is that busy someone should be on the door checking out the customers. do not visit here try the vine round the corner. that is how a pub should be run

Terrible. Typical Whetherspoons pub.
|
cheap cheap drinks, no music, loads of chavs. this is essential for a crawl, because of the prices, afterall why pay more? its okay for a bit, but only a starting place
|
Cheap cheap beer and full of low life and smoke. Food not up to much and always run's out over a bank holiday. Will be a fantastic place when no smoking comes in if they can sort the food out.
|
Has never been all that good - infifferent staff and not very good food. Have not been back since December 2004 when the barmaid could not work the Strongbow pump, could not find the white wine, could not find the wine glasses, could not work the till, and eventually charged for the wrong drinks. However, I do not blame her. The new staff on that day clearly had just been thrown in at the deep end. The bar manager - a youngish short shaven headed guy - would not give his name, just insolently told me to contact head office, and walked off. I only hope the poor barmaid did not get it in the neck after.

This pub is nice in summer if you are able to sit on the little terrace out back over looking the park. Good selection of beers, as with most Moon's pubs. Lack of atmosphere though - as with some other big pubs.
|
pretty average really. a typical wetherspoons pub which could easily be missed off a pub crawl of cheltenham, as there are many better places. the good points are the prices and the location but these are sadly outweighed by the bad points.
|
Its a great pub with good REAL ales with realistic prices.

legendary

This really is one of the worst pubs i have ever been to. Rubbish atmosphere, lazy, ignorant staff and very poor food. Anything good? The toilets, and the cheap real ale's - shame you have to go to such a dive to find them.

Used to go to wetherspoons alot for a few years. Recently, its gone down hill for the younger pub goer and now full of the older (local builders and old age gamblers) generation. Better on weekends but a mad rush of younger people means you wont get served or get a seat easily. Better to go before 7 if you want better food and atmosphere. Not sure what duffman means about music too load as they dont have a music system. Drinks are the cheapest around so a good cheap starting pub for a night out.

usual 'spoons rules apply, no football shirts, no music, cheap food & drink etc. the occasional ruck but nice pub, good for oogling the teeny boppers before they toddle off to Time nightclub on a Fri/Sat night(if you like that sort of thing - i don't!)nice outside area at the back overlooking the park.

Don't order a Sunday Roast here as you won't get what you paid for! The staff serving food don't have a clue. They need to be a bit faster on clearing tables as well! Other than that, good place to go for beer & a burger + cheap drinks.

Went here ages ago, found it to be fairly nice as wetherspoons go, not too small etc.. not a bad pub

the mood under water is an excellent pub. The only complaint is that its too small and plokey, the music is too loud and the drinks are too expensive.
Other than that it is amazing - exactly what you would expect from a Wetherspoons pub.
