Don't understand why such a multi-cultural area attracts such mono-cultural pubs - white, educated, 25ish. Is that the fault of the pub or is it just a market with money to spend. I am being a bit mean and probably not the place for such debate.
In some ways just another gastroish pub, that's lost a lot of its charm, and is becoming oh so typical in such gentrified areas. But there again if it had stayed as a back street boozer then it would have been empty on a mid week evening rather than doing the decent trade, albeit helped by lovely weather (not the durge we are experiencing at the moment). Good beer although the best was quickly off which was a shame.
The intended modest mark was signicantly increased following our subsequent trip to the the Vic. And much better than Lordship Lane.

Came in on Saturday lunchtime for a pint as I hadn't visited this pub before.
Good selection of local beers & european lagers on tap, of which the 3 beers were from within a max of 7 miles from the pub, this impressed me.
Price was reasonable, 3.40 a pint and was served and kept well.
Only 2 couples in who were both eating when I was here, food seemed fairly priced for this very nicely decorated pub well more Gastro pub to be honest.
All in all a pleasant visit and a place I will come back to.

Thanks for the reply earlier this year - yes it was noticed that more action was taken so thank you.

I love this pub, its the best in the area. The only problem is the menu hasnt changed for 6 months which is putting customers off. This is a place you go to eat but the menu is sadly lacking. The staff are lovely as are most of the customers but please guys review the menu! Its got very boring.

To Gonetolunch,
We have brought the outside drinking time forward some months ago from 11pm to 10.30pm out of respect to the residents. The Victoria I believe is 11pm. We do everything possible after that to keep the noise levels down as we are very much a pub in a residential area. Please feel free to come and speak to me if you have any further issues.
|
They need to close the outside area earlier in the evening, as the Victoria does down the road. Seem to have forgotten they are in a neighbourhood. Get a grip owners - too noisy on warm evenings.
|
2nd ed telboy; I would make the distriction of traditional pub round here, so that's the Albert, and modernised- Mont. Both likedby locals and quite a few use both. Good owners staff yes ale - Sambrooks a sth London brewery - and much better than afew months back.
|
This pub sadly went downhill with the previous owners. However, it's back now and better than ever. Friendly, busier, nice makeover, good beers, open more often. Well done indeed. Now my local boozer. The daft ales are excellent.
|
A choice of draft ales, Wandle, Sambrooks, pretty large and for a wed night, not very busy. Wood flooring, smartish bar sort of feel. they ve had to revamp to compete with the nearby Wishing Well / Victoria (100metres)
The Burger, and whitebait looks reasonable

Seconded angie1 - very much the place with some character and for locals to drink in.
|
Yippe. At last, someone has taken over this place. Very happy with the new owners. The pub's looking brilliant, really friendly staff and the food we had was very good. A brilliant local, as it should be.
|
I am so so disappointed with this pub. It started out so well and it was a pleasure to have such good food in Peckham but it really is the pits now and the food and service used to be so good. If you order Pork - there is no Apple sauce and the pork was piled on a lot of slush. The beef was on a lot of lettuce and we were told that they didn't do gravy or mustard. We all gave it the benefit of the doubt thinking that it might have been an off day but have decided not to return again. I mean how can they serve a steak without a sauce/gravy/mustard. Or pork on something indescribable without Apple sauce. If you want good food unfortunately go to the Bishop where you get crackling AND apple sauce and gravy.
|
Great team behind the bar in the Mont these days - good service and atmosphere generally.
|
Dinner and drinks on Sat night, very nice allround.
|
Lacking in atmosphere a bit, but still an ok place. Beer is ok, food menu is good for brunch type foods generally. Seems more of a 'wine place' than for beer. Definitely go in here when in the area, but prefer the Rye.
|
Harveys on - and tasting good!
|
Very good Adnams on here - lovely couple of pints tonight. Also Duchars - Ive never tried that mind - any good? Upmarket largers and very good vino to boot - so good drinks to be had here. Young, mixed, serious (not raving) crowd mostly, but it varies, much like most of the places round here. Great part of London town that the Montpelier is getting to fit in just fine.

I come back regularly now to this excellent local bar, with friends & on my own for a cheeky pint. I usually have their most excellent burger (possibly the best I've had & they actually cook it medium rare if that's how you want it) but last time I had the roast belly of pork, which sits at the bottom of the menu. It should be at the top, it was fantastically good. Forget the negative review about dogs. They always make mine most welcome, with bowls of water & sausage treats. The very pretty and attentive blond barmaid dotes on her, which I don't mind at all! All in all a top pub with great food, top beers and friendly staff...still needs some art on the walls though.

Wonderful food, nice atmosphere. Locals please support it. It gives the overpriced Rye a run for its money.
|
Love it. How refreshing and in Peckham! Nice bar staff, brilliant menu and bril food.Everyone who ignored it under previous management should take a look. I went there for breakfast this morning. The menu is extensive, the food is mouth watering and the interior is great.
|
Yes The Mont is pretty good these days too ( just to gt back on track) Beer - service - grub - mmm
|
In fact the bookshops resident dog - Gus - was even mentioned in a piece in The Economist recently, local knowledge or what...!
|
Shops! - What about wonderful Review bookshop oppositte the Wishing Well public house...and Fenton-Walsh boutique..both on Bellneden Rd, 30seconds from the Mont, cmon try harder!!

As a regular to the Rye hotel, I was slightly reluctant to give anywhere else a whirl. I was pleasantly surprised when I stepped into the Montpelier. A welcoming pub with excellent service and very good food. A roast that could rival my Mum's!!! Food prices are reasonable (and cheaper than elsewhere) and a good variety. A clean pub (although looking forward to the ladies loos being refurbished!) friendly staff, good wine list (which is affordable) and somewhere that I am very pleased to call my local. Knowing three of the other venues owned by the same group (Rapsacallion. Sequel and The Royal Oak in Clapham) this lives up to their reputation and is well overdue in SE15. Hopefully other places will follow suit! (could someone open a few decent shops?)!!

Dropped in here for a quick drink on the way home from the Rye Hotel.
It is great to see a local, unpretentious pub like this appear in our area. Very positive.
Very friendly & welcoming staff. Subtle & cosy interior with generous banquettes.
The whole place just made us start chatting to people, mostly locals, it's just got that vibe. We made two new friends who live at the end of our street.
The football was on the big projector at the other end so there was no intrusion upon people who were dining or chatting at the front end.
Let us bring our dog in, nice.
If I have to raise a criticism, then the interior could do with one or two cool pieces of modern art or photography just to soften it a bit.
I wish this place all the luck & success for the future and I shall be returning very soon for more beers & to try what looks like a hearty food menu.
I really hope that it will develop into a top drinking/dining spot as it finds it's feet & clientele. Locals please support it!

While I lament the demise of traditional pubs, with real ales, chatty landladies and locals who remember drinking there with their grand-dads, there are others - the gloomy, dirty-glassed, formica-clad dens - that aren't worth crying into your beer for. For me, the old Montpelier was one of latter. The kind of place that sucked in light and gave the impression your were more likely to leave through a window than the front door. However, it's now a bright, friendly and inviting pub that hasn't been done-over to within an inch of its life. Dark wood panelling, cream walls and low lighting give it a Dickensian feel, while the banquette seating gives a cosy edge to a what is quite a big space. There's not a bad selection of beers and I was impressed with a good pint of IPA. The food menu looks ambitious, but seems well-priced - let's hope it lives up to its promise. Definitely a alternative to The Rye Hotel for those of us who live further north. Will definitely come back and hope it will become my local.

Dear Anonymous, Sorry to hear you experience wasn't up to scratch. In response to your review we would like to apologise for charging you service charge on drinks. Also after reading your review we have employed a doorman to keep an eye out for any trouble makers.
Thank-you for bringing these issues to our attention.

Nice pub with friendly staff and reasonably priced menu. Should give Rye Hotel a run for its money. However, the automatic 12.5% service charge - even when you are only having a drink and the nasty group of lads who subjected my partner to racist abuse as he walked past the pub this evening the other day means I won;t be going back in a hurry!

Wow! Has this place changed for the better. From the kind of place where you would hire a hit man, to the kind of place you pop in for a drink and end up spending a Sunday. Great and reasonably priced wine list, excellent looking menu (although haven't tried it yet) but better lagers than ales. Really friendly staff too.

What a venue this could be! Comedy club, live music, nice surroundings. The last person was right, it could be a cold mine with someone with intelligence and immagination,

Closing in a few weeks. RIP another SE London pub.
|
The mind boggles that they can afford to keep it open given that there is never anyone in there. The pub has so much potential with a stage where they could put on live music or a comedy slot. Someone with imagination could turn it into a gold mine.
