Faux microbreweery and scaffolding outside - went in at 10pm to be told it was closed despite opening hours being till 10.30pm. Can't be arsed giving it another try and has I got no beer will have to give it no marks.

Went back to the Hill for the first time since it had apparently been taken over by new owners - its had a real revamp and has a much more polished vibe. there is more of a restaurant atmosphere and our party for dinner had nearly everything on the menu - the oysters are divine and the steak was perfectly cooked. The staff are really well trained and knowledgeable about the new wine list and suggested great pairings with each of our meals. It is still a pub - but a real addition to the area and definitely my new local! Thank you so much!

Another fine pub i've been pleased to find in the area. Spacious and unpretentious. Had a great Sunday Dinner drink-up there today and in fact I still feel so woozy I think i shall cut this review short and catch a siesta...................................................

I had sunday lunch here today & all I can say is WOW!!!
I'm not sure if there's new management here but a definite improvement seems to be taking place. It is more restaurant than bar though which is fine by me if they keep serving food as fine as this. Keep up the good work.

Visited again during the week to avoid the scrum in the pubs and bars closer to The Round House and was also pleased to find that it has become a bit more pubby. The ridiculous Tapas bar snacks have been replaced with bowls of chips (wedges twice fried and in some coating but still generally chips). The more pretentious menu items have disappeared for dishes you can actually recognise, but the Steak is still an eye watering 20.00, and one of the girls is now working the bar to serve those who only want to drink. And low and behold there is now a large plazma tele installed from the ceiling by the entrance for the forthcoming world cup matches.
This is also a much more pleasant place for a social drink on a pleasant evening, as the front panels of the pub are opened making it much more light and airy and the two part secluded courtyard garden comes into its own.
But still only a single ale handpump dispensing Adnams, which was decent enough. But if its vertical beer drinking you are after then the nearby Sir Richard Steele is still a much better bet.

| agree with James_R that the hill isn't as snooty as some people say it is. Definitely becoming more of a pub than a bar in the last few months. I'd say it's the wine drinkers pub of choice because of the extensive list, seriously it's pretty impressive.

Main thing however is the food. You can get a glass of wine and a main for 10 on weekdays and it's always of a great quality. They've ditched the fancy bits and gone for big hearty food.

So so glad as this place is near me and is quickly becoming one of my favourites.

Always avoided this pub because of it's snooty reputation but when my local was shut on Sunday I popped over the road for a pint. More expensive than I'm used to but the staff handled the extra customers well-even turfing out two trouble makers that were double their size!Beer garden was a bit small but for atmosphere and service I was pleasantly surprised. I'll still be sticking to my old boozer but will consider this for a special occasion.

Wholeheartedly agreeing with the 2 postings in March: This pub is now truly tawful. It didn't used to be as I have been a regular from 2006 - 2008 and popped in to see if it had improved since I refused to go back in June 2008 and the answer is NO it hasn't. If anything it has got worse. It is all due to the rude and lazy bar staff. These young ladies feel it is quite beneath them to serve drinks or in anyway be firendly or polite. I think a change of management is in order and a complete change of staff.

Having eaten some of the worst food in living memory three years ago in this very pub, I was quite sceptical when my current squeeze insisted that I return to try out the offerings of the current chef.

Things got off to a bit of a shaky start as we turned up at 8pm to find the pub almost deserted. We were just about to head over to The Steeles (my favourite local) when, in the blink of an eye, the pub started to fill up.

Having decided to stay put, I'm glad we did, as years later, I'll still be able to remember exactly what I ate (and drank) - and exactly how it tasted! The food was historic, the wine was superb and the service was spot on. We had a truly memorable night here, so much so that we returned 2 nights later for more of the same.

With regard to the two previous postings ...and following upon my earlier one from last year.... I have decided to give this pub a permanently wide berth too. Last time I was in here during an early Sunday afternoon I was asked by the teenage barmaid if I wanted food immediately upon walking to the bar (of a public house!) After purchasing a pint of lager and glass of house white - at science fiction prices - I clearly recall having to reach around and take it from under the pump itself where it had been left after being poured by the same barmaid who then had proceeded on her merry way to other more urgent chores. Nice touch.

They say it is bad luck to rename a boat, it should be said of pubs too. You can still see the original name 'The Load of Hay' high up in the lovely Victorian facade; the place had happily gone by that name since it was built well over a century ago - right up until some idiot in a shiny shirt and expensive hair decided 'The Hill' sounded better. Even if you want to take it upon yourself to ruin a perfectly good pub by turning it into an horrific, overpriced nightmare of a bar, why change the name like that? What utter hubris, what total disregard for subtlety, history, tradition. It staggers me that such people should be allowed to walk the streets freely, let alone go into business flogging food and drink to the public.

I had a great meal here earlier in the week with a new lady-friend of mine. I'm always at a bit of a loss as to where to go on a date with a vegetarian, but was recommended to The Hill by a friend of mine.
While there was initially a bit of confusion over an unordered pint of Heineken, but was rectified with little fuss, and our bottle of wine was brought promptly over.
I wanted to order a starter, as there were a few that took my fancy, but didn't, only because my friend didn't want one, and I didn't want to look greedy. However, if we ever return I will force myself to, as the couple on the next table had the oysters which looked a bit special.
I had the steak for my main which i thoroughly enjoyed, even with the red wine jus, which I don't usually appreciate.
My partner had the risotto, which she said was a tad rich, and had to have a little break in between, but ultimately said it was very satisfying.
We then went to the garden for a while to smoke, and digest the food. It was quite pleasant even given the time of year, but I'm sure it would have a lot more appeal during the Summer time.
Overall we had a very nice evening, and the true test is that my lady-friend was impressed enough to see me again since.

I have had a few nice evenings in here with my delightful girlfriend though the clientele seems to consist mainly of financial sector workers - thus terminally negating any aspirations it obviously has towards achieving bohemian style.

A pub for people who really don't like pubs. I really do like pubs so I htought it was rubbish.
Dannysigma - 1 Feb 2008 12:02
I was in here late Sunday afternoon and I think there was a private function going on in one half of the pub, so everyone else was crammed into the other half.

My group felt very uncomfortable having a drink sitting amongst diners so we planned to leave after one pint. Then just as we were about to go we were asked to move to make room for a couple that had made a reservation. You have to ask yourself if this should actually be classed as a pub, I would say not!

Im not sure that this place is in Primrose Hill, I would have said Belsize Park or maybe Chalk Farm, but not Primrose Hill.

Anyway, it doesnt really matter where it is as I doubt Ill ever go back.

Mixed feelings about this place. Have been before, but never tried the food- so our eating there was a first and will be the last....

Went for a meal early evening on a Friday. Started off well: nice selection of wines and dishes, lovely waitress. Our starters (artichoke salad/risotto and a stilton/ mushroom concoction) were delicious and we looked forward to our mains, but were very disappointed. The beef tagine was no more than a bog standard stew and needed lots of seasoning added; the pea pancake dish with goats cheese was just too cloying and eating it was an effort. We then waited an aeon to be offered the dessert menu- our original waitress was replaced with a slightly mardy female who proceeded to attend to the champagne quaffers and ignored us. A shame, as we were all set to do the full works with dessert, coffee, liqueurs, etc...but got bored with waiting and decided to leave. Didn't bother with the suggested amount for the 'optional' tip, needless to say....

Disapppointing :o( As a pub it works, as a pub with restaurant thingy, it doesn't.....

Extraordinary interior. Beautiful barmaids. Tender lighting. Decent beer, wide selection of wine. Beer garden. The most patrician pub you will ever enter! It is an experience, but is not a 'boozer' by any stretch of the imagination - try over the road at the Richard Steele.

After an intensive search that lasted most of summer 2006, The Hill emerged the winner of the Best Pimms in London award.

Seriously good Pimms - heaving with stawbs, cucumber, lemon, orange...

Worth checking out, a quirky and interesting boozer.

A great bar worth visiting, excellent service and food plus private room that can be booked for functions

went for a meal there the other night. Paid on my card and they overcharged me. It was an effort to get money back from the miserable waitress. Food crap.
rascalrascal - 13 Apr 2006 11:00
Not bad on the whole - food ok but a little pricey...
