Swan Inn, Ulverstonback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
A Sunday night visit to one of the last pubs in Ulverston that I needed / wanted to tick while staying in the town.
The Swan is a large open plan pub with windows at the front overlooking the hills towards Kendal, this made for a great view on a fine evening.
10 hand pumps with 9 ales on, these were spread from across the UK, with one from Essex, 2 from Cornwall, 3 from Yorkshire and 3 from Cumbria, with a range of breweries represented. I had a couple of pints of Rudgate's Hop Spin @ 4.0%. In addition to the cask ales there was Oakham Green Devil IPA, Fruli and Leffe Brune on Keg, very surprised to see Fruli and Leffe on tap in this part of the country.
Quite busy on this fine evening, with most people in the large rear garden. I would guess that all of the punters here were locals.
We stayed for around an hour, a very pleasant pub with sparten decoration, a couple of smaller rooms and a cracking range of ales. Another pub I’d like to re-visit one day.

Fantastic pub which when I went had 12, yes 12! cask ales available. The Landlord was very welcoming and knew and awful lot about ales and the location of each one and why they had been picked for his pub. He also invited us to go down to the cellar to have a look at his set-up and you could tell he was very proud to show it off. I wish more publicans took as much pride in their work as this man obviously did. Great Atmosphere later in the night when locals arrived and very welcoming. Now found out the Pub won CAMRA's best pub in Cumbria award since I was there and deservedly so!

Welcoming pub with beer garden (well some grass and picnic tables) at back. Good range of cask beers and those sampled were well kept

Local boozer on the edge of the town centre that was pretty nondescript until it became Hawkshead Brewery's first acquistion a few years ago and has gone from strength to strength since. It's basic and pubby, nondescript almost, with comfortable wall-mounted seating for the most part in the open-plan single room, which has a part-partition in the lounge area. Two TVs are situated in each corner and are unobtrusive. A plethora of beer-related literature is at hand, as are newspapers. The beer range is excellent, with 4 from Hawkshead, plus Yates, Coniston Bluebird, Leeds Pale and 2 other guests on my visit, all from Northern microbreweries. Tried 3 of the Hawkshead and all excellent. This is a proper no-frills drinkers pub and has easily the best range in Ulverston, and as such should be made a priority if in the town.

The Swan has a good selection of beers from local Cumbrian and other micro breweries. Visited last weekend and all beers tried were in great condition. Staff and regulars were friendly and despite sport being on the tv screens it wasn't too intrusive. A proper community pub.

absolutely cracking pub. excellent beer, staff always friendly, and beer not too expensive. maybe some of the more "local" breweries' beers could be sold, eg stringers or cumbrian legendary ales. however, keep it up!!

Great range of beers in top condition.

A gret pub, with a good selection of real ales. If any criticism it is that they are in the main similar pale beers.

This is still a cracking boozer, especially since smoking ban! Generally, 9 real ales plus bottled beers (Belgian). Beer always good with regular beers from Hawkshead Brewery (Bitter, Gold, Prime) and from other micros. Some favourites (Phoe If ever in Ulverston a must to visit!nix) appear regularly and deservedly so.

1st class ale. No tv on when I visited just good crack

No longer (Dec 06) owned by Hawkshead Brewery. Still got their beer though, and very good it is too.
Too smoky, TVs showing relentless drivel (SKY sport) with volume on should be torn down and stamped upon. Terrible wallpaper.

Hawkshead Brewery's very first pub, and they're doing an excellent job at it. Usually has at least 3 guest ales as well as several of their own real ales. Very friendly staff. A large part of the pub is now non-smoking, and the air ventilation system works well to make sure even the area where smoking is allowed stays quite fresh.
At the time of writing they recently started serving food, and just held their first ale festival with around 20+ real ales from the local area - this event was very successful.
The pub has always suffered a little from being closer to the outskirts of town than the others, but now its quality has started to draw people in regardless. Highly recommended.
