A Sunday night visit to one of the last pubs in Ulverston that I needed / wanted to tick while staying in the town. The Swan is a large open plan pub with windows at the front overlooking the hills towards Kendal, this made for a great view on a fine evening. 10 hand pumps with 9 ales on, these were spread from across the UK, with one from Essex, 2 from Cornwall, 3 from Yorkshire and 3 from Cumbria, with a range of breweries represented. I had a couple of pints of Rudgate's Hop Spin @ 4.0%. In addition to the cask ales there was Oakham Green Devil IPA, Fruli and Leffe Brune on Keg, very surprised to see Fruli and Leffe on tap in this part of the country. Quite busy on this fine evening, with most people in the large rear garden. I would guess that all of the punters here were locals. We stayed for around an hour, a very pleasant pub with sparten decoration, a couple of smaller rooms and a cracking range of ales. Another pub I’d like to re-visit one day. lezford - 2 Aug 2016 13:49 |
Fantastic pub which when I went had 12, yes 12! cask ales available. The Landlord was very welcoming and knew and awful lot about ales and the location of each one and why they had been picked for his pub. He also invited us to go down to the cellar to have a look at his set-up and you could tell he was very proud to show it off. I wish more publicans took as much pride in their work as this man obviously did. Great Atmosphere later in the night when locals arrived and very welcoming. Now found out the Pub won CAMRA's best pub in Cumbria award since I was there and deservedly so! Aristocracy - 8 Oct 2013 12:11 |
Welcoming pub with beer garden (well some grass and picnic tables) at back. Good range of cask beers and those sampled were well kept AlRobis - 5 Sep 2010 09:58 |
Local boozer on the edge of the town centre that was pretty nondescript until it became Hawkshead Brewery's first acquistion a few years ago and has gone from strength to strength since. It's basic and pubby, nondescript almost, with comfortable wall-mounted seating for the most part in the open-plan single room, which has a part-partition in the lounge area. Two TVs are situated in each corner and are unobtrusive. A plethora of beer-related literature is at hand, as are newspapers. The beer range is excellent, with 4 from Hawkshead, plus Yates, Coniston Bluebird, Leeds Pale and 2 other guests on my visit, all from Northern microbreweries. Tried 3 of the Hawkshead and all excellent. This is a proper no-frills drinkers pub and has easily the best range in Ulverston, and as such should be made a priority if in the town. The Swan has a good selection of beers from local Cumbrian and other micro breweries. Visited last weekend and all beers tried were in great condition. Staff and regulars were friendly and despite sport being on the tv screens it wasn't too intrusive. A proper community pub. LittleFamilyFish - 3 Mar 2009 13:41 |
