please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Two visits, early evening and the following lunchtime, preferred lunchtime as it was quieter. Stuck with the Castle Rock Harvest Pale. She who must be obeyed occasionally was impressed with the range of ciders and tried one from Hawkes. Friendly staff had time to chat at lunchtime - mainly to say hello to a little white dog.

After a visit to the excellent Beer HeadZ at the station (not listed on here), our third stop in Nottingham was this warehouse-style pub. It is a large barnlike pub that is slightly unusual in that the canal runs into it and there are a couple of canal barges moored inside. You get to the bar by crossing a bridge over the canal. Beers, both cask and keg are displayed on screens behind the long bar. Despite the large interior, there is a focus on upright drinking, with strategically placed barrels on which you can place your drinks. There is also plenty of outdoor seating next to the canal. Ales on were Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Hemlock Bitter, Helen Watts & IPA V1, Nene Valley John Lennon & Titanic Cappuccino Stout. Ciders were Abrahall's AD, Friel's Cider, Once Upon A Tree Crooked Branch, Seacider Blood Orange, Gladstone 101, Barbourne Sweet Kernel, Thirsty Farmer Blackcurrant Cider & Hawke's Urban Orchard Berry Cider. There were plenty of bar staff. So service was efficient. Probably my favourite pub on this visit to Nottingham, which has a great selection of pubs.

Had 2 good pints sitting next to the canal after the Forest Norwich match. 1 Pint of Lacons and 1 pint of Oakham. I can't comment on the prices as I didn't go to the bar. I enjoyed my visit and would certainly return.

Two visits here this week. Wednesday night they had some good beers on, but i thought Thursday's offering were not as good. Also had a lot of craft ales on at crazy prices. Up to £8.00 a pint. even more expensive if you had multiple 1/3, 1/2, or 2/3 measures.

What a great pub! Really welcoming and good beer from Castle Rock Brewery. Unusual building with a canal running through it. Food is excellent and decently priced. Tried the venison burger at just £8.95, really good!

If you are a visitor to Nottingham then I reckon this pub should be on your itinerary purely as it is unique in that a branch of the canal runs through the middle of it. The beer ain't bad but rather pricey although small local breweries are well represented. I would probably give the food a miss as it was poor value in my view. The other problem is that the toilets are on the upper floors which involves several flights of stairs to get to them. I recommend starting out five minutes before you need to, to ensure dry underwear. overall thne worth a visit for a pint but there are many better pubs in the city.

Nottingham is chock full of good pubs but this is one of the best. Great choice of world beers, decent scoff, just a short walk from the station, and a waterside location perfect for summer drinking. Came here prior to Reading's game v Forest; in the light of the game I wish I'd stayed here instead!

Short measures, appalling customer service, and crazy craft beer prices (more expensive than some craft places in London!) make this a place that I used to like going into a place that I have little desire to come back to again. Absolute toss.

Originally a barge workshop mill which has been converted to a pub with the canal still there. A walk over the curved bridge brings you to the bar which is a Castle Rock outlet. Quirky place but myself and my Aussie pals opted to drink outside to watch the ladies and barges pass by in the evening sun.

A must see when in Nottingham!

Unique pub with canal (& barge) in the middle. Castle Rock's full range. Plenty of room for both sitting & vertical drinking. The decor & lighting are just right, although a large bar, it does feel a lot smaller & intimate. Food fine as well.
Wilson_MacDonald - 13 Jun 2013 19:31
Probably worth a drop by to cross the bridge inside the pub over the canal and barge to get to the bar. I tried a pint of Hemlock and the others had Nottingham Legend ale was okay but not what you would call brilliant. Worth a punt for the canal barge and canal in the bar novlety though.

Very gloomy pub with little natural lighting, even at lunchtime it had the feel of a night club about it. One massive anti is that the gents are fully four flights of steel , dimly lit stairs away.Plenty of good ale , but also plenty of better pubs nearby.

I was quite surprised when I walked in as in my experience Castle Rock pubs are usually "no frills". What a magnificent building! The canal actually runs through the pub. There's a few little nooks and crannies where small groups can have a little more privacy. The beer I had was good, though the price was slightly above average. The food I didnt try but looking at the menu it didn't seem too expensive. The only inconvenience was that the barmaid did not come across as polite.
jarofporter - 31 Jan 2012 13:16
Great puib, with a great selection of beers, ales and cider. Nice food and a fantastic loation. Very expensive though
randomjack - 16 Sep 2011 13:45
Nice but strange interior. Castle Rock pub. Pleasant staff, ales always decent. Worth a visit.
ng10 - 11 Aug 2011 10:10
Unusual pub literally built over a canal with a boat moored underneath. One half of the pub has loud music, the other half's quiet, so everyone should be happy. Food all day ranging from blow-out meals to light snacks, so again something for everyone. Castle Rock beers - but smaller choice than at the Vat. Friendly and helpful staff. Downside? The gents' toilet is up several steep flights of stairs; not sure how people cope when they've had a few!!
Trev - 17 Apr 2011 11:46
Another favourite pub when visiting Nottingham - interesting old building by the canal and handy for the station. Castle Rock beers plus guest - don't foget to take advantage of their 1 over the 8 promotion!! Beer is always in good nick and it is populat with all age groups. Gents toilet is a good hike up a couple of floors though!
mcroyal - 18 Mar 2011 10:49
Meh. Full marks for trying. Disadvantaged by the selection of great pubs in Nottingham.
jjsint - 11 Feb 2011 16:43
Really nice place for a drink - good beer, friendly staff and an unusual place! The beer "garden" is actually the old wharfside by the main canal. Must be nice there in summer, or perhaps when the canal is frozen over! But yes, the main talking point is the canal arm that exists, running into the building's interior and there was even a narrowboat moored up inside! Brilliant.

Close by the bus and train stations too. Well worth popping in.
dpaajones - 5 Nov 2010 17:05
...the interior is obviously most unusual and quirky, but at 3.45pm on a Sunday, the inside was absolutely empty - not a soul anywhere, although the outside seating was moderately filled. Impossible to gauge what this would be like at busy times, but I assume it does get rammed in the evenings. Decent enough beer selection - Hadrian Reivers IPA an Batemans Summer Swallow were our choices and very good they were, too. Moved outside again and the much larger seating area extends right down to the canalside, so much more pleasant than sitting 20 yards away on the other side of the fence in Fellows...
Gristy - 2 Aug 2010 10:32
Its main selling point is the canal that flows through the actual pub, which is nice to look at but can make the place a bit muggy/smelly. On weekdays, with its great beer selection and quirky atmosphere the pub is often very fun to be in. At the weekend it gets pretty rowdy, and there seems to be some event room upstairs that reverberates a cacophony of dancing footsteps. Definitely worth a visit on a week night.
MX7 - 24 Jul 2010 16:16
A Tynemill house, in this case large and well-fitted out in an old canal warehouse (next door to the Fellows, Morton and Clayton). Less than 5 minutes walk from the railway station. Can get crowded and seems a bit empty when sparsely populated. Friendly and helpful staff, a good if not extensive ale selection (plenty of other choice as well) and always worth a visit. If you have half an hour between trains, a pint here and one at the Vat and Fiddle is easily possible
Stamfordian - 17 Jul 2010 10:46
Great in the summer - truly one of the best canalside beer gardens in the area.
Bit so and so if you take that out of the equaiton though.
steven_Wynn_Uk - 28 Jun 2010 19:38
Went in on Saturday, about 10.30pm. It was pretty quiet for some reason. They stay open until about 12.30 or 1, so it's usually a good place to go when other boozers are closing. It was packed last time I was in there.

The beer was tasty (I had Castle Rock - pale something), and plentiful. The staff were fine.
mooseo - 21 Apr 2010 12:52
visited today. beer range was great - some decent ales, good selection of quality lagers, lots of bottled stuff and a knockout pint of marston's oyster stout. 8/10 for beers.

however, food was below average. didn't spot a restaurant (was drinking outside) but the food we ordered at and collected from the bar was poor. bland and (seemingly) microwaved to within an inch of its life. saw other dishes on other tables and they didn't look great either. 3/10 for food.
hullabaloo - 10 Apr 2010 23:35
Large converted warehouse by the canal with a wharf actually entering into the one large room that constitutes the pub. A bridge crosses this as you enter- a nice touch, possibly unique?
The place is barn-like and has the feel of a circuit pub with dim lighting and a mainly young crowd. Also piped music.
Castle Rock Harvest Pale and a couple of microbrewery stouts on offer on my visit, with a few pumps turned round-Harvest Pale excellent.
I agee with other comments that I didn't dislike the place but it didn't feel overly pubby- probably worth the visit for the novelty, and superior to most circuit pubs, but I probably won't be making it a priority in future.

Great pub near the train station in Nottingham. I won't waste all of our time describing the interior etc. I visited on a Thursday night and it was pretty quiet. The food being served looked very nice. Unfortuantely though, the beers were a bit of a let down. A reasonable selection but mostly Castle Rock (obviously). The barman serving me was friendly and was giving me the Castle Rock discount even though I had no card. The selection of Continental Beers was OK, but not great - nothing unusual on that tempted me. I'm off to the Devonshire Cat. Cya.

Really nice city centre pub. Clean and tidy throughout with a great selection of ales and a comfortable atmosphere. It was just a shame about the attitude of the bar staff, one lady in particular. I visited on a thursday night so the pub was not really busy but every time i asked for a drink, i just felt that i was really putting her out. When i got my card out to pay she actually tutted at me, (I Was buying a round of five drinks and there was no one else waiting) We would of stayed in all night but after that we drank up and left. If it wasn't for her we would of spent another forty pound in there. Overall really nice pub, just don't go in on a Thursday night, or if you do get the young lad to serve you because he was good.

visited yesterday, great beer, great food, great beer garden.

The Canal House is a 4 storey red-brick building which was originally a warehouse and which sits on the banks of Nottingham Canal.

It badges itself as a "bar and restaurant" and I gather the restaurant is upstairs.

As previously reported, an unusual feature is the barge moored inside the pub in a small inlet off the main canal. Going in through the pub's main entrance, you cross a small wooden bridge to get to the main bar area.

Almost hidden amongst the multitude of lager fonts - German and Belgian beers seem to dominate here - are the handpumps offering the usual fare from the Castle Rock Brewery. Both the Preservation Ale and the Harvest Pale Ale were in good form, as might be expected from a pub with a 2009 GBG listing.

There's a large outside drinking area on the canal bank.

I didn't dislike the place, and you might want to come here for the novelty value, or to sit outside on those long hot summer evenings that we occasionally have, but it won't be one of my first ports of call when next in Nottingham.
JohnBonser - 28 Jul 2009 13:20
Visited this pub in March and wasn't impressed by the interior, apart from the unusual feature of the canal going under it and seeing one of the narrowboats moored. Enjoyed Brewdog Trashy Blonde however.
gillhalfpint - 10 Jul 2009 15:19
This is one of the most unusual pubs I've ever been in. I mean, how many pubs have got a canal barge moored in them?!

The building has been restored with a very nice feel to it. Huge selection of ales (mainly Castle Rock) and an even bigger selection of continental bottled beers. Had the steak and ale pie which was OK for 6.95.

Would I recommend a visit? Yes, by virtue of the massive range of beers and the unique surroundings. It's only a 2 minute walk from Nottingham railway station so it should be your first port of call if ever you are visiting.

9/10

Possibly a tad obvious for the natives, but being a daytripper to Notts on several occasions, I found this a great pub with a unique feature being the canal going through it. Top Castle Rock ales on tap and considering it's a few yards from cruddy chain bars a superb alternative and very close to the station.
ToxtethOGrady - 28 Mar 2009 14:25
Bar staff are not the best in the world by a long stretch - standoffish, even quite rude at times, not a pub I'd drink in again unless every other pub around closed.
jrg1990 - 5 Mar 2009 14:50
Called in here twice over the weekend to visit the SIBA Champions Beer Festival. This was held upstairs in the impressive function room. Free entrance, 55 beers, all on handpump, all gold medal winners. Overall champion will be announced in early March. Well organised festival with good staff. Well done guys.
ROBCamra - 16 Feb 2009 10:24
Surprisingly quiet on a Saturday lunch time when I visited. Interesting building to enjoy a pint in, and the Castle Rock beers were (as you'd expect) in tip-top condition.
NellySays - 15 Feb 2009 13:14
A Beer Festival starts today (Thursday 12 Feb) runs until Sunday or until the beers run out! Should be a good one
Roberttherailway - 12 Feb 2009 21:59
Tynemill pub, so mainly Castle Rock beers. Great location and the unique feature of the canal inside the pub. The 2 beers I had were well kept and the bar staff were very friendly. Tynemill run a promotion called "one over the eight". you collect 8 stickers, one with each pint, over as many days/weeks/months as required and then get the ninth free. Unusually, the promotional beer in here was a lager, I've never seen that before. The quiz machine is of pensionable age, but that is true of several Tynemill pubs in Nottingham e.g. Vat & Fiddle, Newshouse. A great little pub chain though.
ROBCamra - 8 Dec 2008 15:52
Quiet on my visit. Had 4/5 handpumps on, mainly offering Castle Rock ales. The bridge over the canal is a great feature and worth visiting for that alone. Food was reasonably priced and arrived very quickly.
stoutoforder - 2 Nov 2008 19:34
The only pub with a canal running through the bar, even if it's a locked-off spur. Beer was ok, pub is a decent enough place to sit and watch the activity on the main bit of the canal.
rainlight - 17 Sep 2008 21:00
Extraordinary entrance whereby, once inside, you cross a bridge over a still branch of the canal housing a full-sized narrow boat; this leads to a large open-plan single roomed bar, reminiscent of a warehouse style which, I suppose, it may easily have been in a former life. A large outdoor area provides lots of picnic sets next the canal proper and is covered by a glass roof, providing light and shelter. Crouch Vale Blackwater Mild, Rugby Victorious, Castle Rock Harvest Pale & Preservation and Tds nemesis (see below) Elgoods Golden Newt which I also had & thought ok (if not as perfect as the many other beers of the weekend) his was hazier than mine tho, I suspect bottom of barrel.
trainman - 9 Sep 2008 18:05
Interesting building with the canal coming inside. Unfortunately the only poorish pint I had on a big Nottingham crawl - although my own fault for not asking for it to be changed, thinking is was about OK and then deciding it wasn't as I got half way down. However to be fair the others had a variety of beers which were well rated, so I would give it another try.
Tigerdrinker - 7 Sep 2008 22:16
Impressed!! went there on a warm night, made use of the outside benches and patio heaters, food was excellent, service fast and staff where very pleasant, would definately recommend this bar
jaylou29 - 28 May 2007 15:05
Was most impressed with the warm welcome and service. Excellent choice of beers and lagers. Can't wait for the summer when I will be sat in the beer garden watching the world go by!! Unusual canal feature inside bar is well worth checking out.
anonymous - 17 Feb 2007 17:10
Must be the only pub in the country to incorporate footbridge inside! Amazingly, you look down on two canal boats which can be sailed in and out when the glazed portcullis is raised. As a Tynemill pub, it stocks their own Castle Rock beers plus guests. The Harvest Pale that I ordered was in excellent condition.
Alerover - 5 Jan 2007 21:21
The tables outside are great. On a warm, sunny day there's no better place to be. Beer, canal, and lots and lots of people to watch.
Thera - 27 Sep 2006 23:49
Used to really like this place, but it now seems to be going a bit down-market - went in there last weekend and the place was infested with chavs - maybe the warm weather brought them all out....
jonnyg - 6 Jun 2006 09:33
Great pub, especially outside in summer by the canal, the clientelle are mainly students, or city dwellers trying to be upmarket, ok yahhhhhh. Watch that bridge though, you dont want to fall in the water after a skin full.
mistymoon - 28 Apr 2005 12:32
Excellent little jaunt, really super in summer.Beer is fab and always good.Frequent this place every summer just to watch the boats up and down the canal.
