Lovely pub in a quaint village. Mainly foody with two small bar areas for drinking. We sat out the front and watched the world stroll by. Beautiful.

We reluctantly visited again yesterday evening as we had a local appointment. Much to our surprise it was a much better visit than our previous one last August. The staff were friendly and efficient and could add up. The beers (Harveys and Long Man) were in good nick and both our meals were very good traditional pub nosh. The place was packed and most tables were pre-booked, which I really hate having to do to go out to a pub. Other similar food orientated pubs seem to thrive without booking out all of the tables to diners.

It amazes me the things people find fault with. If you want a dining experience then go to a restaurant, if you want good food and a decent portion then you cant beat the value at The Yew Tree. In particular the hot food comes hot, which is a novelty in itself. If you dont want the dollop of cole slaw or red cabbage, then mention it when ordering. Just ask for some other salad instead. I do. Yes, it can be a little cramped, but it adds to the atmosphere of this old style country pub, or ask to be sat in the conservatory, but book up in advance if you can.

I have visited the Yew Tree a couple of times and have no idea why anyone should think it may be a gastro pub. It is a typical British pub that serves good beer and food, which, in the main, is of the plainer variety. That is what the British pub was all about, the very thought of public houses being gastro is to me ridiculous. If I want upmarket dining then a go to a fine dining restaurant not my local. As said the beer and food are good, not sensational, but represents very good value for money. On that basis I would recommend it to anyone. If I have a complaint (observation really) it is that the portions are too large, but that is simply my opinion.

We arrived today for our first visit to this popular local just on 12:00. Within 20 minutes the pub was full mainly of people somewhat older than us and I am nearly 60. The service was prompt although the barmaid had to add up our two drinks using a notepad! The same barmaid also had the same difficulty when I ordered the lunches.
My lunch arrived a little while later but my wife's was about 5 minutes behind mine, the reason was not explained to us and we did not receive an apology. My food was good but my wife had the king prawn platter, which only appeared to have 2 king prawns on it, the rest being the cheaper tiger prawns and bog standard frozen ones. The dish was padded out with copious amounts of salad including bought in coleslaw. All a bit much for 11.95.
We were sat at a table laid up for 4 but I couldn't see how four people could eat at the table without spilling their lunch over each other's plate.
Overall a disappointing visit and we do not intend to return unless we have to, although, inability to add up aside, the staff were efficient and friendly enough.

what an amazing pub lovely staff friendly atmosphere and FANTASTIC FOOD not only was everything piping hot and served quickly but the veg was fresh the portion are very generous and the garden is beautiful this is a pub we shall visit again !

A very nice village pub in a lovely spot, although it does get very busy indeed on nice week-ends with visitors. Well kept Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter and - as others comment - decent and good value pub grub with generous servings. There's a large car park on the opposite side of the road junction. There are some nice walks up to Arlington Reservoir if you want to work off your beer/food afterwards.

Passed this one a few times at the weekend and it was usually packed. Finally an opportunity presented itself to call on a Wednesday and it was still so popular that even at just gone twelve we got one of the last tables. Very good country pub and I can't really fault it. Our meals were well prepared and generously served. The beer (Harveys Sussex and Hadlow) was well kept and the service was friendly and efficient. Highly advisable to book as even arriving early won't necessarily get you a table.

This pub is attractive and friendly. And it's certainly true that the food is copious - as another reviewer has said the portions were huge. However, while the menu's descriptions might lead you to imagine a gastro pub experience the reality is more old-style pub food (eg the scallop starters are presented like pub scampi, the pork loin with mascapone is sliced meat-&-veg in gravy like a giant school dinner). This is fair enough given the very reasonable meal prices but well worth bearing in mind if you haven't been here before and were perhaps liable to mistake 'good food' with gourmet dining.

Have known The Yew Tree for years : and the continuity of excellent service has always been a feature of each and every visit. The only possibly criticism for most of the food would be that the helpings seem almost to be TOO BIG!! A lot of salad and veg added, which can put some off. The menu changes, but there is also continuity in finding old favourites. A criticism might be that at times possibly a little too reliant on packaged foods prepared elsewhere (or so it seems) Excellent ales. Bags of atmosphere and very friendly. Plenty of dining room, although now there is always the need to book, unless you are lucky. A large rear garden and pkletny of access points to the many walks in this area. Well done overall, Peter

Great pub! Went here on Christmas Eve with two friends and we all had a wonderful time with great food and a great atmosphere! Harveys Old Ale now available and perfect pint too! This is a GREAT pub and we shall continue to visit on a regular basis.

We eat here 2-3 times per month - it's our local favourite. The food and service is excellent. Wide selection of foods, including vegetarian dishes. (Please can we have 1 or 2 vegan options?). Food and drinks are alays ordered at the bar - Mercedes77 must have gone to a different pub.

I would definatly have to agree with Jocadasa, there is no way that mercredes77 was at the Yew tree Arlington, I have never had to wait for the excellent service that they provide, the staff are always very attentive and always aknowledge you as you come in! As for being told to sit down and wait for your order to be taken..... all food and drink are ordered at the bar in my experience, and its always been a very efficiant way of working as all the menus are written up at the bar! I can only presume that it is a different pub, I will definatly continue to visit the Yew Tree, its the best pub in the area for food without a doubt! Couldn't fault the staff or the food, you can see why they are always so busy!

is mercedes 77 talking about "THE YEW TREE INN "in ARLINGTON? as it does not sound like the same place i often visit.I have always had good service, good meals and have never been ignored. In my experience drinks are ordered at the bar (i never had to wait).I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone
|
I commend Mecedes for waiting what seems to be 50 minutes for a drink witout walking out!
|
The review from mercedes77 seems to be a different pub to the visits we've had at the Yew Tree. In fact we visited it very recently and had great food and great service. One thing I would say is that the attractive blonde girl behind the bar could smile a bit more but she still gives very good service. We always find the bar staff attentive and the food service and quality is excellent and will continue to use this pub on a regular basis.

We booked a table and when we walked in it took 15 minutes for anybody behind the bar to acknowledge us although we arrived on time. Tried to order drinks but was told 'somebody will take your order at your table'. Nobody did. After 20 minutes we went back to the bar and it took another 15 minutes to be served. The person who we took to be the landlord was more interested in chatting to his mates rather than doing any work, leaving the rest of the staff running around. Just about to leave and we were served our drinks. Food not great and when I came to pay landlord ignored me again, chatting away. Hand driers in both toilets didn't work. A classic case of being complacent and relying on current business and not putting any effort in. We still spent 100 in that visit but will not be returning.

Visited for a family bithday on recommendation. A fantastic pub, great food, and good value for money! Staff very pleasant and accommadating, our experience was nothing but wonderful. Even got a birthday cake! Overall a very pleasant experience and would definatly visit again
|
wonderful pub,my favourite place to eat.always a warm welcome and relaxed atmosphere. very good value for money and children are welcome.generous portions and tasty food
|
Have to agree with the other comments about the surly barman ...someone buy him a personality or send him on a customer care course. Food ok but bit over priced for a pub menu.
|
Great food. Extensive menu and good value. Booking advisable at weekends as it is very popular! Nice big, sheltered garden.
|
Called in here a week or two ago with some mates, didn't eat which seemed not to go down too well with the bar person (landlord?)who perhaps just wants to sell meals. Anyway, lovely location apart, I'm afraid my pint of Harveys was the worst I've ever had, it was so warm I could have bathed in it. Undrinkable.
|
A bit disappointed; my meal (the 'Apricot Nut Roast') was all chutney and apricot with nothing resembling a nut roast anywhere to be seen, let alone the puff pastry that was meant to encircle it. my friends and I were surprised by the tinned(?) runner beans and the rice which looked like Uncle Ben's stuff, esp in view of the other comments baout the food here. The bloke behind the bar was almost surly, so not a great experience- nowhere near as good as the Six Bells at Chiddingly.
|
Wonderful, Sat outside the front, yesterday and read the papers. Watching horses, trot past. Bit hairy when 4x4s come round the corner. Big garden out the back for the faint hearted. Big climbing frame in the car park.
|
Great unpretentious pub, good value food and large portions.
|
Excellent pub nestled in the country lanes around Glynde, Berwick etc. Worth a trip for the fantastic food that they do. Always massive portions with a huge range of food every day (roasts aren't just for Sundays!!). Great beer and nice garden. Need to book as it's busy EVERY DAY! Can feel a little cramped at times but the food is great and the female bar/waiting staff are pleasing on the eye :-). Real fires in Winter and a nice feel to the place.
