An out of the way pub visited by locals, walkers and retirees. Sits overlooking the Arun Valley and its a magnificant view. Decent selection of ales and the food is excellent. A firm favourite with my wife. Accomodation is available. This pub isn't really child friendly because it doesn't really have the outside space. Plenty of other pubs in the area can. We've been coming here regularly for 4 years and that says it all.

Great pub, superb beer and fine food. No obnoxious brats either.

Visited this pub for dinner whilst walking in the area. The bar staff were very friendly and knowledgeable when asked about the 4 ales that were on. In terms of food, they had a good range of specials on and the meals we had were all good. Although it was dark by the time we got there, it apparently has very good views during the day! A good option if you're in the area.

Off the beaten track and a pleasant enough place.

Regarding the negative reviews about children in pubs/restaurants, I don't mind at all if they're well-behaved but so many are allowed to run around screaming these days whilst the parents totally ignore them. In the 'old days' going out for a meal was a treat, learning how to behave and experience new food and then afterwards we 'let off steam' in a park or open space .

This is a small, quiet pub & offers no childrens facilities with a view to encouraging adults. There are many family friendly establishments around - lets have just a few for adults too.

Er, thanks for the comment Final Arbiter. Personally I think pubs should be open to all, and be an important centre for the community, and this is the key to their survival in these difficult times. Surely a vibrant society is far more preferable to a few moaning old soaks at the bar. The more traditional a pub, the better, but we really don't need to go back to the days of ignorant descrimination e.g. no children, blacks, Irish, gays, women, disabled etc. ...

I was a child, but I was not allowed in pubs. If you want to take your brats into a drinking establishment, either go to Wetherspoons, or emigrate to Yerp.

Great pub, great food and superb beer - but don't expect a warm welcome if you have young children! We were made to feel very unwelcome and have heard similar stories from other local families who have reluctantly decided to boycott the Sportsman. (Reputations travel fast around these parts) Come on guys, stop discriminating, get some high chairs and remember: you were children once too!

12pm Sunday lunchtime. Best Langham's Hip Hop we've had. Friendly staff too. Worth a return visit as food looked good as well. We'll be back....

A warm welcome from both staff and locals at this pleasant country pub with gorgeous views over the Arun flood plain. Excellent ales (4) and very good food (yummy wild boar sausages) at good prices. Pub has quite a bit of character although a bit blighted by '60s and 70s improvements. Overall, a pleasure to visit.

Have made a repeat visit. I was not disappointed. I like this pub more and more. Good friendly welcome from the landlord as we opened the door. beer range had a different guest - Kings summer ale. Really delicious. Food excellent. Views from the conservatory and decking are stunning. Great place to rest up.

Visited this pub on recommendation from CAMRA friends. Superb countryside and great walking area. We did a circular out from Pulborough station and the pub is about half way round - see Time Out Walks on the web. What a lovely pub. Excellent range of 4 well kept beers. And super food at a reasonable price. Very welcoming staff. Worth repeat visits.

A friendly pub with a nice suntrap terrace outback with a lovely view over the marshes/water meadows. A good range of local beers and, although, we only tried the one, it was in good condition.

A fine pub, excellent beer, friendly staff and nice atmosphere. One small problem is the lack of comfortable seating.

Four of us spent a great weekend at the Sportsman Inn in Amberley whilst walking on the South Downs. It's a nice, traditional, well run pub and Rob the landlord and his staff couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful. The three beers we tried (Dark Star Hophead, Harvey's Best and Brains SA) were all very well kept and the food was perhaps the best pub food we had ever tasted (perhaps rude to call it "pub food" as it would have graced many good restaurants) and we felt, good value for money. The pub is nicely situated overlooking the Amberley Wild Brooks (water meadows) to the rear, has three small cosy bars including a brick floored public bar with dart board and a nice conservatory overlooking the wild brooks where most of the food is served. Our bedrooms were comfortable, clean and well equipped. Can't wait to return.

Fantastic views from the beer garden / wooden decking area out back.

Worth visiting this pub for the views alone.

We only stopped for one drink, so don't want to pass comment on the pub as a whole, based on one pint.

Only had time for a quick pint whilst cycling through, very friendly, excellent location, menu seems appetizing, must return soon.

Warm afternoon on the verandah overlooking the Brooks with a cool pint, very nice indeed.

Stayed here recently, for the second year running, as the half way point on our annual cycle the south downs way weekend. We are always really well looked after, our bikes safely locked in an out building overnight, and breakfast laid on an hour earlier than usual to allow us to get away in good time. In addition to this the food (dinner and breakfast) and beer (3 to 4 well kept local real ales) are also well worthy of a visit. Just a shame we're usually so tired that we only last until about 9.30pm before retiring for the night.

Friendly staff and just wonderful views with Langhams bitter in good nick.

A pleasant country pub nestling on the edge of Amberley with a friendly atmosphere, I enjoyed a well kept pint of Hophead (Dark Star) and Harveys Best. Food was excellent and even though tending towards the pricier end of the scale for pub food, represented good value because of the high quality and variety. Would certainly recommend a visit if you're in the area. There is a very small car park (takes five or six cars) but you can park on the road.
