user reviews of the Bridge Inn, Amberley

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Bridge Inn has a lovely location next to the river. Although, that does make it popular on a nice, sunny day such as yesterday. We found car parking space easy enough. But the exit back onto the main road is quite perilous. There is a small outdoor area at the front, where there were a mixture of diners and drinkers. The ale range was a little disappointing - Harvey's Sussex Bitter, Long Man Long Blonde & St Austell Tribute. There was no real cider. Nice location. But, nothing more to recommend it for, in reality.

This is a very good place indeed. I have tried several times to get here, but parking spaces near it are in very short supply. A decent choice of well-kept beers and very good food in giant portions. Very much worth a detour around Worthing for. 7.5/10

Friendly pleasant pub, laid back from the road and just a couple of minutes from the Wey South Path (and the South Downs). The Langham's Hip Hop was incredibly good when we visited and the staff polite and smiley. All you need from a pub as well as a three minute walk back to the station or ten minutes back to the downs.

The Bridge Inn at Amberley is an oasis. Not actually in Amberley at all but situated, as its name implies, between the railway bridge at Amberley Station and the river bridge over the Arun. If driving along the B2139 at this point between Storrington and nearby Houghton you might, despite its Inn sign, miss it altogether and think that the riverside 'Boathouse' to the south and the Tearooms, with their colourful parasols, to the north are both pubs - but worthy though they may both be - they are not. The Bridge Inn lies about 25 yards down a lane to the south. It is a Georgian style building with car park and benches to the front and lots of room inside. Good range of beers, lagers and ciders and a fine but not excessive pub menu. Warm welcome. An idea spot for refreshment if walking or cycling the South Downs Way or other local routes. I called in on 29 Aug 13 after a lengthy walk and slaked my thirst with a couple of pints of Harveys. A gem: well worth a visit.

I like this pub. Food is good and unpretentious, service is friendly and attentive and the beer well kept - we had excellent pints of Bowman's and Tribute, with Harvey's Best as the untried third, on our latest visit.

With two other recommended pubs within 30 minutes walk (the George & Dragon and Sportsman), and river, downs and museum on the doorstep, this is a great place for a day out, as relaxing or energetic as you wish!

We popped into the Bridge Inn on Sunday after a morning yomping over the South Downs Way in the driving rain. An excellent, friendly pub with well-kept Harvey's. The sunday roasts were fantastic!

Almost 2 years since our last visit here and pleased to say the standard of food and drinks are as good as ever. and the staff friendly and helpful as before.

Terrific location, and the tea gardens opposite are worth a visit too.

Can only endorse the previous comments. This is a real pub! Great staff, owners and locals. Harveys was very good. The food was what you wanted wholesome and well cooked and great value for money. The coffee at the end of the meal was good too. This has to be one of the places to stop off in the area.
Nice not to be 'gastroised' for a change

This pub is an excellent reason to finish a South Downs walk in Amberley. Nice location and a nice, lengthy menu. Keep up the good work!

We were greeted by a warm friendly welcome on a wet lunchtime... Nice choice of ales although I went for a draught Guinness and my friends were on soft drinks this visit. There was a great food choice , and the seafood lasagne and chicken and leek pie from the specials board lived up to expectation. We had passed on the starters and went for the high calorie puds. Tis country pub is definately one to stop at... we will be back.

I liked this pub a lot. My pint of Harvey's was excellent and my friends enjoyed thier Sharp's Cornish Coaster. There was also Skinner's Bett Stogs. The staff were very friendly and dog friendly too. We didn't eat but the menu looked good. Will defintely visit again when in the area.

Great pint of Harveys here, consistently good. Landlord is very friendly. Perhaps he will stock Harveys Old in the winter ???

Been going to this pub on and off for 20 years now since camping in the area as a kid. Always been very welcoming (well, except once about 15 years ago, I'll let them off that now). Harvey's and a couple of others on tap, well kept. Good food and occasional live music (acoustic influenced though so doesn't overwhelm the pub). My favourite in the Arundel/Amberley area. Good atmosphere and beer garden to boot. Hope to keep coming here for the next 20 years.

Popped in here for a pint while waiting for the Amberley Beer Festival to open. My oppo and I weren't disappointed, this place is friendly, serves an excellent pint, and we sat in the pleasant garden enjoying our beer in the late summer sun. A little gem of a place. Barmaid was rather nice too, curves in all the right places.

The Bridge continues to be the most consistently excellent pub for both food and drink in the area. Car enthusiasts should look out for landlord Dave's MG Midget in the car park. Wide range of meals available, all served with a smile. Chef is keen to talk with customers later on their experiences, and there's a nice garden for that summer afternoon and evening. I'll keep returning.

Great Pub, great food, layout and ambiance. best pub around amberley area.

We came here today because of a bad experience up the road at the George and Dragon (now apparently run by a disciple of Basil Fawlty). We knew nothing about the pub before. We had a very enjoyable time: good atmosphere, friendly staff, good food (and very generous portions) and will definitely be going back. Also for those of you who don't know the area, it is in some beatiful countryside right next to the Arun river.

A verey friendly pub - the landlord and his wife are very hospitable, and keen to talk to customers. A reasonable number of tables, and excellent food. smallish carpark, but a garden in the summer. highly recommended

been here a couple of times now even though I live 75 miles away. Took some mates(8 of us) and were given long table at back of restaurant which was ideal. Great food and great service and the landlord and staff always seemed to smiling. Would highly recommend

The new landlord (and wife) have done a great job here, always the best pint of Harveys in the area + excellent guests such as Taylor Landlord, Sharps Doom Bar & Skinners Betty Stogs. Always a friendly welcome and superb food. Open all days every day

This is our local and we visit regularly for its good beer, tasty food and friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Ate there last night and had delicious sea bass and tender, perfectly cooked steak, served by helpful, friendly staff.
We think it's the best pub in the area and so were very surprised to read the negative comment posted last month. We find it very hard to imagine the owners being anything other than their usual friendly, welcoming selves.
It's a great pub, definitely worth visiting!

Having been recommended this pub for food we went last Saturday night expecting good things. We were hugely disappointed and won't be returning.Service was non-existence. They kept us waiting for 30 minutes and then the surly (rude) landlady announced with glee that the kitchens were now closed (leaving us unfed with nowehere to go). The pub itself is nice but beware the ferocious landlady! She is enough to give you indigestion. We had a lovely meal at the Boathouse instead - go there, much nicer atmosphere.

Visited this pub for the first time about a month ago, having rejected our former favourite of The George & Dragon at Houghton (see my review there). Very friendly & welcoming family run pub with good food. Garden & terrace both busy on our first visit.

(I mentioned that we had come to them instead of the George & Dragon because of their (G&D's) restricted menu for outside food, and paper plates. They said that the G&D had changed hands a couple of times recently and several people had commented to them about the poor attitude of its new owners.) The Bridge Inn had a full menu choice for their garden and used 'proper' plates!

Have since been back and enjoyed another mid-week lunchtime meal there - again, car park was full and garden busy. And they warn you that there will be a 20 min wait for food because they are busy - which is helpful and more than a lot of others would do.

Dropped in here after just missing a train, and I was glad I did. Nice atmosphere, good food and well kept Harveys beer.

Very friendly and pleasant pub in a great location. Excellent food and beer too.

Great pub, nice atmosphere, and exceptional value for money on the food front. Average beer selection (Harveys or Harveys!) not that there's anything wrong with harveys of course, and it is a well kept pint.
Went there for a birthday meal a couple of weeks ago, and none of us could finish the food. Well presented, and the best veg I have eaten in a pub in a long time.
Well worth a visit!!

This is a really nice little pub. Lots of parking at the adjacent railway station as well as pub car park. The food is always good. Traditional and Greek specialities. The portions are so big, I can't finish my meal!! Staff are really friendly, efficient and knowlegeable. Two open fires make the place really warm, even in the chilly winter. Slight blackboard overload as you look around! Shame the apples in the crumble are tinned as most of the fruit and vegetables are of top quality.

New owners since Jan 06. Now spotlessly clean. Very much a country pub with good beer and food. Family friendly and very welcoming.

A bit "icky" needs to employ a clean pub policy. The beers are usually top notch though, had a preat pint of Duetchers IPA
