The George and Dragon, Houghton
It was interesting to read other recent reviews of this pub, as it now appears to be run by Basil Fawtly. We went there earlier today with some friends and were very disappointed with the welcome. We arrived at noon and found the pub was not yet open. We waited for 5 minutes because there were people inside and eventually a grumpy looking man came to unlock the door to let one of his staff out. When we tried to enter we were told "we don't open until 12". Which was odd because it was already 12.05.
He then stood behind the door to stop us entering. We looked at each other and decided to go elsewhere. When I told him we were going, he said "Good".
What kind of pub turns away 5 customers? Some of the hand written and misspelled signs gave warning of an unfriendly welcome: plastic glasses because of "brakages"; walkers being threatened if they left their cars in the car park withe consequences underlined three times, etc. Like one of your other correspondents we went down the road to the Bridge Inn in Amberley which was as good as the G&D is bad!

We came here today because of a bad experience up the road at the George and Dragon (now apparently run by a disciple of Basil Fawlty). We knew nothing about the pub before. We had a very enjoyable time: good atmosphere, friendly staff, good food (and very generous portions) and will definitely be going back. Also for those of you who don't know the area, it is in some beatiful countryside right next to the Arun river.
