Read the other comments, can't say I've met the landlord but the girl who has served me on a Saturday afternoon is pleasant. All the locals seem to be members of a serious celeb deadpool. Decent rock soundtrack and Hartington IPA. Not bad for a quick visit, but could do with a bit of a tidy up.

The makings of a decent pub, although the owner is a tool who is obviously trying to cultivate a contrarian character for himself but just comes across as rude, and to women in particular.

An unmodernised feel to both pub and customers. Found it relatively friendly although the locals do tend to hog the bar. The pint of Hartington bitter was quite nice.

What can I say.... As a very wet potential customer, I stuck my head in the door to ask the only person in there if dogs were allowed only to be greeted with an "Oy, OY Oy what you doing?, don't just walk into a pub with a dog without asking. I've got a staffy in ere who'll rip her face off"!! He followed that up with she is allowed in but let me make sure mines out of the way. I said don't bother, I'm not staying to which he replied "remember, don't just walk in a pub with a dog on a lead without asking first!! Twenty first century customer service..... Shame really, I've run pubs for years and love Hartingtons beers, oh well, Black Lion at Consall for me then.

Excellent Hartington range of beers plus at least one guest. Visited on a quiet Saturday lunchtime, only a few in, but pleasane atmosphere nonetheless. Very friendly Staffy pub dog.

Landlord could do with learning to smile.. but he's from Yorkshire and perhaps it's an act? Beer always good but no atmosphere apart from winding up said misery guts *grins* Nice big garden at the back.. nice facility.. Overall one of the pubs to visit along with the Bull 8/10

Basic boozer with full range of Whim beers plus two guests.Very good juke box and occasional music festivals.Sadly on our visit the Flower Power ale had run out,but Hartington Bitter and IPA were very supable.Traditional interior but the totty always drift past heading for more upbeat looking premises. We found a friendly welcome ,yet the pub was quiet for a Saturday evening.

The landlord is uniquely obnoxious and unpleasant, that's why as per the earlier comment above, people mostly ignore him.
Just because he can strum a few chords and sing out of tune does not entitle him to behave like he's Mott the Hoople, whereby his delusional self adoration seems to permit his surly and objectionable behaviour.
Beer varies from what can be very good to poorly kept and sickly. The place is filthy and stinks not least because of the flatulent staffy allowed to wander everywhere.
Do yourself a favour and avoid at all costs.

Enjoyed Whim Hartington IPA and Marble Chocolate Marble 5.5% on a quiet lunchtime. Spartan pub but has a nice feel to it. Imagine it will be a friendly local when it fills up.

Brewery tap for Whim Ales brewed in the village of Hartington - try the Hartington Bitter a top quality session beer. Alway a good selection of Whim and guest beers and cider available all well kept and served on top form. Staff and regulars are a mixed bunch ranging from characters to barking mad! Beware, the landlord is from Yorkshire but don't worry nobody takes any notice of him. The whole 'Wilkes' experience is classic; comfortable surroundings, good company and great beer - enjoy.

one of the best pubs that I know of. why? 1- Always a good selection of ale at least two Hartington (Whim, and one other guest. Guests are NOT from a chain list ie not spitfire-adnams-fullers rpt.
2- Interior. Somewhat spartan but this is all the better than false 'ye olde inn' type tat all over the walls. virtually untouched 18th century coaching inn booths etc.
3- Clientele. The landlord is a freindly Halifacian. Attracts few shandy or chemical pop lovers or moronic Sky TV football fans and all the better for it. Dogs allowed, because it doesn't serve food. Good. no sunday luncher types.

Generally at least 3 beers from Hartington, and a guest. All kept very well - the brewer is often found drinking in here, so you know it must be good ale!
Music on a Monday night, and three Sunday music festivals over the summer where there are about 20 local bands performing from noon to close. An excellent day out!!!

Superb town centre pub. Beer range excellent and very well kept. Highly reccommended for a friendly atmosphere.

Visited lunchtime and enjoyed the idiosynratic air in this pub. Loved the Magic Mushroom Mild.

Real Ale Pub, in a lively market town, serves unusual beers, such as Magic Mushroom Ale, Black Christmas (tastes like xmas cake), the best is Hartington Bitter (slight elderflower flavour) all brewed locally. Client range from old hippies to young art students. Once a week the landlord has a get together with local musicians and play folk songs. Not the place to go if you want to dress up, drink cocktails, and hear crappy chart & dance music. I recommend going on a sunny Sunday afternoon, when quite often local bands perform in the car park, it's a real drinking session, but sane enough to take the kids!
