Most of the pumps weren't on when we visited. Came back a couple of hours later, still the same. They need to employ someone who knows how to change a barrel. Bigger choice at the Dolphin down the road.

I know this is BEER in the evening but I must mention the food. ( The beer, by the way, was okay - 5 guests and the 3 usual regulars.) Back to the food. I chose the sirloin stake and all the trimmings. The steak was cooked less than the medium I asked for - that didn't bother me too much. It was just inedible, chewy, full of gristle and almost impossible to cut. As for the mushrooms; I think they had been cooked the day before and left out in the sun. Or maybe they had attempted to cook them by the sun. They were uncooked, dry, and again inedible. In the majority of pubs, 5 minutes after receiving your meal, staff often ask if everything is okay - not here - I think they may be very wise!

I am disappointed and a bit puzzled to see so many negative comments, particularly about staff attitude and real ale, can't comment about food but the ales are always well kept on my visits and have never met any other than obliging staff, maybe I'm lucky or easily pleased !

Awful pub. When you can find the bar staff they are rude and unhelpful. The best choice of beer is the "Available Soon" as the rest is not up to much. Food is dire so don't bother eating here.

incredibly unclean, from floors to glasses, rude staff, bad food. other people mentioned how bad the draught ale was - it was ok for £2

This wetherspoons is the best one in Plymouth in my opinion although the food can be a bit hit and miss sometimes. It does have some nice seating areas and although a little dark in places i found it to be a comforting enviroment. 8/10

I was back here agin last week; it wasn't too bad, The ale was fine and the place had a friendly feel to it even for a Friday (early) evening.

Reasonable pub (for a Wetherspoons) set back from the street. I visit reasonably regularly to use CAMRA vouchers and enjoy a good value pint most of the time. Usually a selection of different ales on, but too often there are three or four still settling and not yet on offer (a little forethought in the cellar would not go amiss). There are certainly better pubs around the Barbican, but I will continue to visit.

hmmm i have never been asked for i.d in a wetherspoons pub before now and on showing the manageress my licencees card, she refused me service!!!!! oh my god.... the woman behind the bar claimed to be in charge but has never heard of a personal licence before and doesn't have one. correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't that illegal?
the 'manageress' said that they don't need a personal licence as they have a premises licence. wow, that must be the first exception in Britain.

This is one of those weird, barn-like, JDWs with a Stygian gloom about it. I think I found the only table with enough light by which to read my paper. Although there were a fair few people in last night, service was prompt. The Jail Ale was fine but I had to send back a pint of Sharps Doombar which was very murky and it was exchanged without demur, almost too quickly though, as if the barmaid knew it was going to be dodgy -if so then why keep it on the bar? I only came in because I couldn't find another pub I had been recommended to try.

Unlike nearly everyone other reviewer, I thought this was a very nice place (and I'm no great fan of Wetherspoons, either). Visited late on a Saturday afternoon, the family area was very busy, only two people serving but we still got served quickly and pleasantly. The Jail Ale was as good as I've had anywhere else, too. Maybe it depends on the time of day when you go there, but I'd definitely visit again.

Possibly the worst pub in the Wetherspoon's empire. Inside, almost every bit of upholstery was torn, and you needed a torch to find your way around the side bar area(probably so you wouldn't notice the upholstery....). Outside equally tatty, and it was difficult to quote a table number for food, since the numbers were written in felt-tip and faded. Beer was tolerable, but the range limited and uninspiring. Staff were pleasant enough, but, as in most JDW pubs, there weren't enough of them. All in all, a bit of a bummer.

This is a typical Wetherspoons pub...ie poorly kept beer, unhelpful staff, bad food. If you like Wetherspoons, you'll love it!!
|
Classic Wetherspoons. The ale is awful and it's impossible to get served at any time. Went in early on a Sunday afternoon - it wasn't particularly busy, there were four staff on the go and it still took 12 minutes before I could get a drink.
|
Not as bad as the reviews make out. Had a great pint of Exmoor Gold and the Spitfire was ok.You wouldn't want to spend a whole session there, but ok for a couple. Staff friendly too.
|
The only pub in the world that you can be in the way wherever you are in the place.
|
This is alright, the clientele are a bit dodgy but otherwise its a nice little bar to visit on a pub crawl- not for too long mind you!!
|
The Pedigree I had on Friday night was rancid. So were the other 4 pints my friends had too. Clean the lines out or sell the beer within 3 days, it was awful, truly awful

This pub is great for starting off on a crawl round the Barbican area. Being a Wetherspoon it's prices are pretty competitive and so a good start for a night out on the town.
