I just had to write a review about this pub as it clearly gets overlooked ,and was even by me until a few months ago when i went in there for a drink after an evening walk.I was so impressed when I walked in the door,it was so much better than the outside gave it credit for and to this day I keep returning, but not just for a drink, but for the amazing great food that is cooked on this premises. It has the Xfactor as far as pub food is concerned and I urge you to go and try it for yourself.I am off there tonight for a meal, cant wait to be wowed again! The atmosphere is so inviting too with candles lit all around and low lighting and a resident kitten ,called daisy who I happen to adore too.I often have her on my lap when eating my meal(my choice!) so please do go and give this pub a try.You wont be disappointed .Well done John you are a top class landlord!

We went here for lunch today, and noted the carpark was chockfull and the driver said "Sod that then". I said we should try to squeeze in, as a busy carpark is a good indicator of a good pub, and sure enough, a car left and we were able to fit in. Very good move, as it happened. We had Butcombe & Tim Taylors Landlord, both in very good condition, although maybe a little too cold, but probably so to encourage the lagerists to try the proper stuff. Saw a couple of old pals here, who I hadn't seen for some time, so that's a good sign. The food was better than most pubs I've tried (and I've tried quite a few). My pal (the driver), who is a chef with many years experience, pronounced the repast as one of the best pub meals he's ever eaten, so that just about sums it up. Suits me.

Four of us went for Sunday lunch yesterday and had an absolutely fantastic meal. The food was excellent and the service offered was so hospitable - we couldn't have asked for anything more. Would definitely recommend people to go to this pub.

A Very nice comfortable welcoming and tranquil local situated on the outskirts of Street,Bcombe Bitter and TT Landlord on offer served by a seriously cute barmaid. 8/10

I was working in Street last summer, and the Elms became my local. Both the owner and barman always treated myself and all my colleagues with cortesy and were very friendly and helpful. The beer was excellent, and if the one we wanted had passed Jon would tell us it was off, and offer something else. He never served a bad beer and I feel he never would! One evening was particularly lively, with Sneaky Pete and The Vipers playing live, and an excellent time was had by all. With regard to those whe are too short-sighted to see beyond pony tails, earrings and beards, I would suggest that The Elms is better off without such people. Don't worry Jon, anyone who really knows you will be sure to return!

I was a regular user of Jon & Pauline's pub in Somerton and now they've craeted a great atmosphere at the Elms - unfortunately I now have to drive there (or get the wife to!). The beer is always immaculate and as some other reviewers have noted Jon is a fount of knowledge. A group of us had Sunday lunch there last week and it was excellent - Pauline's catering has not changed! Who cares about the sartorial elegance - the staff are all charming and helpful and J&P have revitalised what was previously a pretty grim offering. Go there (and get someone else to drive!).

Unfortunately, when I am working, I wear a uniform, so I'm unable to show myself in my working garb. I have been a publican, and would never dress in the manner of the pony-tailed, ill-clad barkeep here.

I have known this pub for ten years or so since I live just a little behind it. It came alive as a food pub during Tracy and Giles era, went through a poor patch and now has a very different feel, but nonetheless is a place where I will feel happy to go for a drink or food. The new owners have created an atmosphere which is relaxing enough whilst still being able to offer good table service for food, which is of a very good quality for a pub.
I would recommend readers of reviews for this pub to pay most attention to the more recent postings regarding food and beer. As regarding criticising the sartorial choices of the host, let those critics upload images of themselves so we can understand by what standard others are judged.

Mr Tom Hampton Get a life. I can only guess you have not been there since the change as yours dated 19.06.2009 is 100% back to front.
Try it again and have the intestinal fortitude (guts) to apolagise as you leave.
Otherwise BOGOF.

Pauline is I hope slaving in the hot kitchen preparing another superb Sunday lunch as our expectation reaches fever pitch. I like deaf OAP's and the full spectrum of ages I see there. So a good job you only looked in 18.06.2009 & 19.06.2009 as I find one has to book for lunchtimes now to be sure of getting straight in. But if you both come in I am sure you will get a cheery wellcome and good food and beers.
Pardon!!!!!!!!

Same team that was in The White Hart in Somerton. Thank goodness they have reappeared somewhere else! Pauline must surely be the finest gastropub chef for miles around. You will NEVER have a bad food experience where she is cooking. Believe me I try to find faults and have consistently found her food to be 100% faultless. Jon the landlord is also the most courteous bartender/waiter/host imaginable - always keeps a perfect pint and dazzles me with his knowledge of the products he sells. Please please stay at The Elms or if you move again make sure it is not too far away.

Great food and beers since John & Pauline took over. Relaxing sofas, excellent decor with excellent staff and all at reasonable prices. We would (and have) highly recomended it to all and sundry.

Gentlemen, gentlemen - best of order please!! let's try and remember why we contribute to these kind of websites - not to score personal points but to pass on genuine comments to genuine pub goers. Whilst many people wouldn't wear a fu manchu beard and sport an earring, it's not a sound basis on which to judge a pub. Also, every pub has a couple of pub bores, it's one of the many attributes that make English pubs great. However, with the greatest of respect, it would take a huge leap of imagination to call the place "a nasty dive" or describe the landlord as "..the most unpleasant person in Somerset" ( You haven't met my mother-in-law! ) In fact I had lunch there last week and it was ok, plus the beer was in pretty good nick. In my humble opinion in deserves a better score than most of the other pubs in Street.
|
Really nasty dive - the beer is very poorly kept to the extent that it is practically undrinkable and the landlord must be the most unpleasant, coarse and rude person in Somerset!
|
Well, if that's the sort of language (and attitude) we can expect there, it's no wonder the only ones who use it are the deaf OAPs I saw when I looked in. (only there for the reduced price food I guess)

Comments from customers:
"I've lived in Street for 20 years and have never known the Elms to be as busy and as well managed as it is now."
"The best atmosphere The Elms had had for years and years."
"The only place I eat is where Pauline is cooking. No wonder The Elms is busier now than it has been for many years."
"Now that Jon is running The Elms the beers will be immaculate, the food will be perfect and the wines and spirits will be backed up by mor knowledge than I have ever seen in a licensee."

I saw this bloke too. I think he used to be in the White Hart, Somerton. A right wally if ever there was one! Some people just don't fit. As you say though, the beer ain't too bad. Not tried the food. Was mostly full of OAPs when I went there.

Hi Sad Thanks for the mention. You may wish to look up 'socialite' in a dictionary if you can read. The 'Timothy Taylor' is not bad either. You will not be missed. Happy chappy.
How sad.

This place has re-opened, and they are open early for breakfast! At least they're having a go. Unfortunately, the bloke behind the bar has one of those ridiculous Fu Manchu type wispy whiskers from centre of lower lip to below chin, along with a ponytail and to cap it all, a bloody ear-ring! Don't these people realise that the only males who wear ear-rings are fishermen, pirates and pooftahs? Then of course there were the two pontificating prats in the corner of the bar, one a former accountant (with wife present), and the other no doubt, a similarly failed socialite. Decent pint of Butcombe, but I shall not return. Sad.
