Nor a pub then - or flower shop...
croydonpeer - 30 Aug 2019 12:39
Open as a Mediterranean restaurant!
peterd56 - 30 Aug 2019 12:06
This pub has closed and has been boarded up. It is on the market but whether it will be sold as a pub or a site for redevelopment remains to be seen.
boozers_knows - 14 Aug 2014 15:11
Popped in while walking past. Only ale on tap is Doom Bar which was a nice drop but shame there isn't a range. This is a sports pub so if you large tv screens, noise & the crowd that comes with that then I would suggest you find somewhere else.
rosco_uk - 2 Apr 2012 12:08
Popped in Sunday too catch last half of footy .....well what can I say, atmosphere was fantastic it took me back too the 80s every 1singing and dancing apparently pub fishing trip just got back, they have definitely turned this pub around
1pintoflagerplease - 22 Nov 2011 21:14
Hmm... can anyone vouch for the improved selection of ales?

It's not my end of town, so I don't go past very often. However, when I walked past during the summer, the place looked awful... dirty, dingy and I could only see something like Youngs Ordinary and London Pride on the pumps (superb beers, but I'd go to a Youngs or Fullers house to drink them... free houses always make a pigs ear of them).

This was once a nice little place serving interesting local ales... be great to see that sort of thing return.
sfocata - 2 Nov 2011 18:00
nicely done out with a great beet garden. let down by all the chavs that have invaded this pub.

delboyxxx - 27 Aug 2011 13:36
NEWS FLASH!!!!!!! The White Horse is under new management & will be re-opening within the next few days. The new management & staff are all local Epsom folk & they are planning to stay for a long long time. Once they have got the pub up & running again the Jazz nights will be among the first things that will return, Along with the ales, pool table, darts & 3 large T.V's showing live spot.
delboyxxx - 25 Aug 2011 23:28
Stopped off here for a quick one on my way back from football. There is no bar billiards despite being featured above, and the landlady confirmed this was got rid of by the previous landlords, 2 - 3 years ago. What a great little pub, though: clean, tidy, bright, nicely furnished, with a pool room, large screen TV and an expansive beer garden. And the beer even tasted good.
tommo5 - 6 Aug 2011 21:21
My intention was to just pop into this pub the other friday!! I was delighted to see they had live music, a chap playing guitar who was superb.I ended up staying for the duration and thoroughly enjoyed myself!! Landlord and Landlady are lovely people, very friendly and welcoming. Will certainly get my hard earned pennies again for sure.
ladymerlot - 3 Oct 2010 16:12
I've been here quiet a few times recently to attend the live music events. They have some great live bands on (free entry) and also some great beers.

They had Bombardier ale on recently (delicious - must have got through a gallon of the stuff - not all in one night though) and also some very good Youngs Ordinary (an excellent "session beer" at 3.7% alcohol).

The landlord and landlady are quite new but are very helpful and friendly. I plan to visit again soon.
currymusodave - 9 Sep 2010 13:24
Who diss Missywissy

Certainly having a pint or twenty, but sadly not in this establishment.Agreed
jeffdaff - 6 Aug 2010 22:31
cokedrinker - you need to be a bit better at your own spelling before you correct others ;)

"Families, is "ies" not "ilys" - glad their paying attention to their job then!"

sfocata - 19 Jun 2010 18:09
Oh epsomaledrinker, and jeffdaff arnt we getting a little bitchy about these two pubs....!!!! everyone wishes both pubs will continue to get up and running, so stop this bitching please, and get on with the job of having a pint or two..!
missywissy - 10 May 2010 07:16
Dont drive past, pop in and see the new people who are trying to get it up and running again, ask them and they will explain, they are a very accommodating and genuine couple tryng hard in the face of adversity, Thank you.
missywissy - 9 May 2010 22:43
I drove past here on Friday and there is a big banner covering the 1st floor front of this pub stating it is for rent or sale. So what exactly is the current position?
wyndham - 9 May 2010 22:33
I cannot believe so many unthruths are circulating about this pub just recently,if the previous managers were soooo great, how come they are not still there, the truth is they ran it in into the ground and lost so much custom, let us see how they get on in The Ladas.......as for The White Horse now, Chris and Jan,a very decent couple are trying to clean up the mess left behind, upstairs and down, eventually getting the kitchen up to a clean and safe area and then being able to serve food, how on earth food was served there a few months ago is beyond belief, Chris and Jan are down to earth decent folk trying to pick up the pieces left behind by the previous managers, give them a chance for goodness sake, they didnt create the problems in the pub, they were already there before they moved in , we all want this lovely old pub to get back to the way it was a good few years ago, before being robbed of its original nature, not just the odd person who has one pint a night and then decides they know all the cures for this establishment, it needs commited and hard working people to get the old place up and going again so let this new couple be given the chance to do so and stop all this childish bickering going on.....Good luck Chris and Jan....dont let the b........s drag you down.
missywissy - 9 May 2010 22:06
Well done Chris and Jan for turning the white horse back into a pub. We now have a jupe box and a pool table and soon food will be available when the kitchen area has been completely referbished. How the old management ever prepared and sold food from the old kitchen is beond belief. I wouldn't recomend a meal from their new esstablishment (the aladiss).

By Concerned customer
charliebrian - 9 May 2010 19:37
I have not been to this pub in recent months as I have moved from the area and have just visited this website.

I feel obliged to say that Stuart and Gemma threw heart and soul into the White Horse. They really did try to make a success and tried just about everything within their abilities. However they and the current operators are dealing with a background beyond their controls and outside of their experiences.

As a result of the way owners, both pubco's and brewers, have run pubs over the years have succeeded in driving customers away and discouraging experienced and entrepreneurial operators. As a result, in general and in this case in particular, PUNCH is fighting to survive as a company and is selling pubs to keep afloat. The absence of decent ales is because PUNCH screws small brewers.....and charges the pub top dollar hence no ales: they double the price paid!

It does not take a genius to work out the end game here (the WH sits on valuable development land) just don't try to put blame on Stuart and Gemma or even the current incumbents, put it where it is due.
Insearchofthebestpint - 9 May 2010 18:48
The new land lords of the, "White Horse" Chris and Jan are doing a wonderful job; for instence they are encouraging people to come into there pub - especially under the very difficult circumstance. Chris and Jan have a very good sence of humour and make you feel welcome. Now the Pub has been cleaned up we would like to see more locals back.
charliebrian - 2 May 2010 17:46
There's a lot of mud slinging going on below - can I maybe offer some impartial thinking?
I liked the pub under Stuart and Gemma. They are good people and they treated me well - from idle chat to offering samples of the guest ales before purchase.
As an out-and-out ale man, I enjoyed the range Stuart and Gemma had on - including local beers from Pilgrim etc. The food was pretty good too. However, they always struggled to pull a crowd and the pub was always quiet.
I've been into the pub since Jan took it over. Jan seemed decent enough - no critcisms really. But the real ales were gone, and the kitchen was not up and running. The pub was fairly quiet and the earlier friendly vibe was missing somehow.
The bottom line is that the pub was and is quiet. Previously I was drawn in by the ales but those are (at least at the moment) out of the window. Within months people will probably stop going there as the pub has too little to offer. After time, the pub, along with this post, will be long forgotten.
CLey1982 - 30 Apr 2010 12:57
Reading the inaccurate comments made by "grumpydrinker" im starting to smell a rat and due to the fact it was registered on the same day as the comment was made, i do wonder if this user is in fact some way related to the new management. Why else would you go out of your way to write something like that on here?

My job takes me past the front door of this place many times each day (even at weekends) and the car park never has more than a couple of cars in it.
The first thing that strikes you, is the scrawl on the blackboard outside threatening to wheel clamp non customers, not something you would want to brag about! The second thing, is the spelling mistake on the banner plastered across the front of the building! Even my 6 year old can spell better than that! Families, is "ies" not "ilys" - glad their paying attention to their job then! :-S

Out of interest after reading 'grumpydrinkers' review, i drifted in with a colleague in passing. I say drifted, we went in one door, and walked straight out the other. The place doesn't have a warm welcoming feel anymore, and the person behind the bar seemed more interested in his mobile phone than serving either myself or my colleague. We didn't stop to ask why there was a mattress in what was once the restaurant area although we did have a good laugh afterwards speculating between us why it was there!

I also noticed that "Chris and Jan" seem to be the fourth or fifth managers in about four months. Thats gotta be a record!

Im sorry to have seen a really good pub go down the loo.. Definitely definitely, not going back in there.. :-(
cokedrinker - 24 Apr 2010 00:50
I absolutely and totally agree with epsombeerbelly's comments. As for needing cleaning up, well the cleaner when Stuart and Gemma were there is an extremely 'close' friend of mine and they also clean MY house! Stuart and Gemma left it in a spotless condition, I know I helped them move out and saw it.
The pub 'WAS turned around when Stuart and Gemma left' so either the present landlord or the ones in the last two months have totally undone all the grand work that they put in to turn it into an award winning pub. If you want to 'DIS THEM' grumpydrinker then go round to the Ladas, learn what a pint of well kept ale should taste like and do it to their face. Honestly, you should be ashamed of yourself. I don't drink in the White Horse anymore because I do not want to witness how it has deteriorated since Stuart and Gemma left and I have a delecate stomache that cannot take too much abuse!
epsomaledrinker - 21 Apr 2010 17:36
Oh my god i had to laugh at the last comment, given that i live 2 mins from this once gem in the crown of epsom's local pubs i can tell you all at no point in the past two months has the white horse been packed or buzzing. I don't think i have ever read so much tosh in my life i have heard of bending the truth to make a business sound good but the statement below is an outright heap of codswhollop. The white horse has not been neglected over the past few years in anyway shape or form, infact the neglect has started in the past two months since the new owners brought the place from punch and decided to turn over managers more often than they change there socks. I have a sneeky idea the author of the previous comment is someway affiliated with the new owners or managers eitherway i think whoever they are they should refrain from talking from there rear ends. If you want to lanch the place as family friendly may i suggest you have a chat with the previous managers stuart and gemma who had that down to a tee to such an extent they won awards for best family friendly pub among others. Now please spend more time getting the place back to its previous high standards and less time wasting webspace on this site.
epsombeerbelly - 21 Apr 2010 15:31
I was driving past the White horse on saturday lunchtime and decided to pop in after noticing the pub was surprisingly busy. The car park was full and the place was buzzing with local drinkers and their families.

The pub has been taken over by a lovely (and very witty!) couple called Chris and Jan, who despite having the pub for just a week are doing a great job in turning it around. They're having to do a bit of work cleaning the place up after a few years of neglect and are planning to introduce food, a pool table, and Sky TV in the next few weeks. It sounds like they have quite a bit of experience running good local pubs and know how to do it properly.

It's early days but it looks like we could finally have a good friendly family pub for locals.
grumpydrinker - 18 Apr 2010 09:25
Can it be true ,the grapevine says 5.....yes 5 managers in 8 weeks! newest incumbants sleeping on matress in bar at night ! Wow the new owners sure are WORKING OVERTIME to fail, should be a law against engineering of situation to ease planning applications,RECKON SIX MONTHS AND APPLICATIONS WILL BE IN COUNCIL CHAMBERS FOR SOME NEW FLATS ON THE SITE - SHAME ON THE COUNCIL IF THEY ALLOW SUCH BLATANT RACHMANISM.
jeffdaff - 13 Apr 2010 11:06
Quite so Jeffdaff! I heard that the dullard in question was sacked and now there is a barmaid who demands her customers to buy her drinks! I don't think so baby!!!! I recommend the Ladas. It's turned into a really friendly pub since Stuart and Gemma took over, and now they have Sky TV too!!!!
epsomaledrinker - 22 Mar 2010 01:09
I cannot believe how quickly a pub can change. Boring dullard behind the bar ,a bar which is now stocked with run of the mill boring ales, therefore absolutely no point in visiting.
Can only think that current owners are deliberately running the Pub down to enable easing of planning aplications in the future for some nice flats !
jeffdaff - 18 Mar 2010 22:05
Drove past tonight, cant believe how empty the place is! Guess im not the only one that didnt feel welcome in there! Thanks to epsomaledrinker's comments below, im pleased to say i have found the previous management team just round the corner at the Ladas. Along with their normal warm friendly welcome! :-) Hope to see you all down there!
cokedrinker - 7 Mar 2010 02:02
Indeed, what has happened to the White Horse? It's not good for the barman to be seen smoking and slouching over the bar during opening hours! Not only not good, but illegal and quite off putting. What a slovenly, couldn't care less attitude. I used to be a local of the Horse but I simply refuse to set foot in the door any more. All the people that were barred from the pub because of their violent nature or because they used, or were dealing in banned illegal substances are apparently returning. Gemma and Stuart turned it into a family friendly pub and 'THEY' won several awards for the White Horse, which no doubt the new management will 'hijack' as their own.
The White Horse used to have the best real ale in Epsom. Now, the best real ale in Epsom can be found in the Ladas, Stuart and Gemma's new establishment. I am boycotting the White Horse in favour of the Ladas, which has been cleaned up and rejuvenated.

epsomaledrinker - 5 Mar 2010 00:48
Im seriously lost for words. What has happened to this place? I thought when places were under "new management" things were supposed to get better. Unfortunatly, it looks like the complete opposite has happened. The place is simply not as clean as the old management team used to keep it and the guy behind the bar seemed to have a very "dont care" attitude.

I wont be drinking here again. Does anyone know what happened to the previous owners?
cokedrinker - 4 Mar 2010 22:15
what has happened ? was horrified to hear what had happened to the previous landlord and his family at the hands of the new regime. cant see how they can still claim to be a family friendly pub after this. at least you wont have to go far to see stuart and gemma as they have moved round the corner to the ladas.

wont be going back to the horse and will certainly be recommending to all my friends, family and business colleagues that they boycott it too. i, for one, will definately be spending my money at the ladas instead. at least i know i can get a friendly welcome from decent people there.

and as for good business practise giving a family 9 days to leave is not good business nor is it "family friendly". a shame another decent pub down the pan.

definately wont be going back.

Good morning just a short note to let you know about the real ale festival happening here this bank holiday weekend.Raising money from the sale of our selection of local ales
Dry Hop Gold from the Dorking Brewery
Guilt Complex and Ranmore from the Surrey Hills brewery
Tea and HBB from the Hogs Back brewery
Crusader from the Pilgrim brewery
Plus we have 4 ales featured in the pub
all money raised will go to the licenced trade charity, and we top the weekend off with ferret racing on bank holiday monday at 2.30.
Stuart_Down - 28 Aug 2009 08:48
Hot damn, yes... this is quite a find. Not only is the amazing Surrey Hills Brewery represented, but also Reigate's Pilgrim Brewery. I've only been on a summer afternoon, and sat in the garden, so can't really comment on the indoor atmosphere, but the staff were very friendly and the place seemed clean and well cared for. Looking forward to more visits.
sfocata - 22 Aug 2009 18:46
I was here last friday and found the place to be fairly quiet no idiots shouting or swearing just my kind of quietness i also ate which i have not done so here before and the food was great i had the fish and chips and i have to say in my mind it's the best in the area my wife and child also enjoyed there pies. i'll be one that does come back ( not many pubs i can take the other half and kids and still enjoy myself) thanks to the managers for this gem i hope they can keep it going.
epsombeerbelly - 18 Aug 2009 14:14
I visited this pub when I saw the high rating on this site - big mistake. We were there on a Friday night and it was completely empty save for the pub staff and their pals. We were treated as if we were invading their own living room. The food was also completely tasteless. Would definitely not pay another visit.
Wrighty12 - 29 Jul 2009 12:22
what a shame to hear that the cabaret nights have been cancelled recently due to one disgruntled person. when are people going to learn it's a PUBLIC HOUSE ?! don't move next to a pub if you don't like noise. maybe this person would be better suited in a cave somewhere away from civilisation. i, for one, am very sad to see a community pub's spirit being knocked especially after they seemed to be winning their battle with the pubco behind them. the cabaret nights were always such a great live music event.
To the person who has caused this take note: the general public in and around epsom DON'T feel the same way you do and appreciate this real diamond of a pub and everything it is trying to do. might i suggest you get out of dodge ? maybe the outer hebrides would better suit your way of life.
tinkerbell - 20 Jun 2009 13:52
Sounds as tho' the battle with their pubco is being won...discerning customers may well now re-appear...these are not fooled by industrial beers which is one (of the many associated reasons) potentially great pubs (which have poor products foist upon) are disappearing. It is not that customers are going to other pubs,,,many now just don't bother to come out at all for a poor offering. Are pubco's starting to learn?
Insearchofthebestpint - 8 Jun 2009 22:41
Hi all this IS the manager of the White Horse just a quick note to let you all know mon - sun 6-7pm is now happy hour all drinks are half price. Also as of this Friday we will be stocking some fine ales from the Pilgrim brewery starting with Surrey Bitter. Thanks for your errr funny input funnyman. Thank you to all who have posted possitive feedback regarding our pub we hope to see you all again soon
Stuart_Down - 8 Jun 2009 22:19
i find it odd that some of these reviews appear to be written by the land lord or his wife under various different handles.
funnyman1 - 7 Jun 2009 17:35
Love this pub! Hubby raves about beers - PROPER real ales and bitters. Once i can drink again, I look forward to working through the range. Food reasonably priced and does what is says on the tin. Not our local but likely to become our regular. This is a real gem in a sea of dross. We have had several lovely afternoons here!
anniewakeywakey - 20 May 2009 16:42
Excellent Pub. Great Landlord, Great Locals, Fantastic Ales, Brilliant Food, Wonderful Atmosphere! What more could you possibly ask for in your local boozer! 10/10.

Beer range has been upped again. Surrey Hills Shere Drop, Brains Rev James, St Austell Tribute and Harvey's Best. 2.50 a pint to CAMRA members.
GuideDogSaint - 29 Mar 2009 21:36
What a superb place. Family friendly and great choice of ales/beers, we'll be coming back here more often. The landlady was very hospitable, something that is lacking with other pubs in the Epsom/Ashtead area. As others have said, the pub was quiet, which is such a shame. We really should support such places, rather than going to the chains and to other less well presented pubs. We'll be going back, that's for sure.
cjs1980 - 21 Mar 2009 13:32
Why don't people come to this pub more, it's great! Last night we attended the Queen cabaret night,
had a brilliant meal, which cost 12 for two of us and great free entertainment all evening.
All the feedback on this pub is good but according to the local press it is struggling.
Use it or lose it, the landlord and lady deserve more support they are doing a great job so get down to
the White Horse and see for yourself what a nice place it is.
mrsrockychick - 29 Jan 2009 09:43
Very quiet on a wet Sunday lunchtime, just a couple of families on nice-looking roast dinners and us stopping by for a drink. To be honest I'm surprised it's got the BITE rating it has, as there isn't much to distinguish it from many others. Certainly the beer range mentioned below seems to have gone, with just Tribute and Rev James carrying the torch. Friendly people though, and the beer was very nice.

Not, on current evidence, a destination pub, but well worth a look if you're passing or have business at the nearby hospital.

nickdavies - 25 Jan 2009 18:12
Best part about this pub was cracking food for the price, Meals are 2 for 10 (Weds-Fri, I think). Was a certainly a cut above standard pub grub.

Ale on offer included Tribute (excellent) and IPA.

It was a shame it wasn't very busy for a Thursday night, as it's quite a smart place and it's great to go somewhere for a good meal and a decent pint for a reasonable price. I'll go back, but hope (for their sake) it gets a bit busier.
Roodeye - 16 Jan 2009 17:30
WIN A BRAND NEW CAR - tickets on sale exclusively from the White Horse with Pro_C'eed's going to the Huntingtons Disease Association. Pop into the pub for more detials and to buy a ticket.
Flobert - 19 Nov 2008 13:23
A welcome return by popular local covers band Atlantis on Nov 5th 9pm Don't miss it - bound to be fireworks!
fenderbassman - 24 Oct 2008 17:39
This pub is excellent. Very friendly staff, fantastic food, a real ale club where members get discount, discounts for nhs workers, discount for over 50's ithink its called a gold card. Ales kept exceptionally well and also changed regularly so evey time I go in there, there is always something new to try. Definitely recommend!!!!!!!!!
Trifixion - 20 Oct 2008 22:58
I would just like to say a big thank you to all that have supported us so far, since the press release went out on Thursday the support and well wishes have been fantastic. Times are extreamyly hard at the moment but the support we have recieved in the past short 4 days has been fantastic, please keep supporting us so we can ensure this ale house can keep going and ride this tough period and come out the other side bigger and stronger for you guys to enjoy for years to come it is after all the customers that make a true taditional english pub what it is. For those who are unaware we have recently been crowned the best cask ale pub in the south east according to the morning advertiser and as a thank you to the ale drinkers that have made this possible real ale is currently 2 per pint untill the end of October.
Stuart_Down - 7 Oct 2008 11:54

According to one of the local papers the landlord is having problems with meeting his tenancy costs and it appeared from the article the pub might close.
The pub co owning this pub said that they have reduced the rent and fixed it into next year.
wyndham - 4 Oct 2008 19:34
Further to my review below I have been informed by the landlord that the reason for not starting the promotion was the lack of a delivery. I understand that it has either started or will do shortly.

As for my comment about the barmaid all I am saying is that a volume control might come in handy! She is indeed lovely and I have absolutely no complaints about service.
GuideDogSaint - 24 Sep 2008 21:24
Went in last week and can't aggree with the other review, best barmaid I've seen in ages! talks to every one knows her stuff & made me and my mates very welcome! we're deffo going back
tinahat - 24 Sep 2008 14:00
I visited recently & found all the staff to be very friendly & welcoming, lunch was exelent as was the service, Good selection on hand pump although not all in use. there was a good atmosphere with the staff & locals all enjoying themselfs, I would recomend this pub to anyone in the area.
Stevethebar - 24 Sep 2008 13:08
Seriously starting to wonder about this place. Headed down tonight as according to a press release they are selling real ale at 2 a pint from now until the end of October. Not tonight they weren't. To be fair not an unreasonable 2.75 for Everards Equinox and Butcombe Gold. For a pub with 6 handpumps it was all they seemed to have on, the Copper Dragon Scotts 1816 was halfway turned so not entirely clear. Add to this the most insufferable barmaid you can find and somewhere that seemed a cert for the next Good Beer Guide is going to start losing votes. Down a mark from me.
GuideDogSaint - 22 Sep 2008 23:37
what a fantastic pub this is. Im amazed as to how they keep coming up with new ideas. There's lots of great deals going on; jazz, quiz, karaoke, kids eating free, bingo mornings just to name a few ! A real family orientated pub. Lovely couple running the pub. Imagine my surprise when i walked in to find a bouncy castle as a permanent feature in the garden. Really relaxed atmosphere, smiles all round from the staff. Nothing is too much for them. Definately the best pub in epsom. 10/10. Stars all round. And the Best Cask Ale for miles !
tinkerbell - 29 Aug 2008 22:31
We had a pub lunch today, sat outside in a pleasant garden and the food was wonderful - heard other people saying the same. Noticed a number of elderly people having a leisurely lunch and decided we'd be returning very soon. The people were lovely and so helpful; many children indicated it's child friendliness and I could see that my veggie daughjter would have plenty of choice from the menu. Wish it was my local. Never mind.

Apologies for any confusion with my last post I have asked the admin team to remove it some time ago, the pub is now open on Tuesdays however we do not currently serve food on monday or tuesday and jazz is returning weekly on a Thursday evening starting this week.
Stuart_Down - 4 Aug 2008 22:26
See comment below from SD, suggests closed all day Tuesday. Not indicated to my recall on the sign on the door so Again I'd recommend checking.

Worth the slog uphill from the station in the summer heat, a pleasant bright and welcoming place. Hancocks HB, St Austell Tribute, Brains SA, Batemans XB, Adnams Explorer and Abbot Ale on today. A side room contains a bar billiards table and juke box, there is a piano in the L shaped main bar. A seperate rear room was set up for a party later on. The rear walled garden is pleasant with a decked area, the remainder grassed. Generally traditional table and chair seating with a couple of chesterfields by the front entrance. Papers and board games available. Leaflets in the bar advertise jazz on Thursdays but an earlier post says different so probably worth ringing ahead. A beer and cider festival is advertised for 22-25th August.
Opening hours should be noted, Monday 6-11 and Sunday 12-9. Rest of the week 11-11/12. No food Mon and Tues according to the sign showing the hours. Free WiFi available for those who need to take their laptop to the pub with them.
Maldenman - 26 Jul 2008 16:48
Jazz is now only on the last Saturday of every month, and our ale offering has now increased to 6 hand pulls with abbot as the house ale. Please also note we are now closed on Monday's untill 6PM and all day Tuesday, the pub is available for private hire on Tuesdays. We also now have our very own bouncy castle available upon request for parties.

What a change! Not only has the old nag been refreshed..it must be the ale..but the licensees are refreshing in their welcome...whilst normally I do not like kids in pubs they are not too obvious...a small but tidy garden with a good food offer and an ever changeing range of beer, (maybe one too many for the level of trade?)..quality recognised by a recent cask marque award..we can only hope that their enthusiasm is not crushed by Punch's corporate hand.BQ 8.5

Moorhouse Premier, Bath Barnstormer, Coach House Cheshire Gold and Bishop's Finger tonight. Had the first three which were all very good. On last visit they only had one ale which was a bit disappointing but if they keep up to this standard then I will be in here lots. Up a mark based on tonight.

A small pub just outside Epsom Hospital. A pub I didn't used to like because I felt that it was too clichey. However it is now under new management who are promoting it as a real ale pub. It is planning a beer festival on May Day weekend. It has an awkward shaped lounge which makes poor use of the available space and is dominated by the bar which can be difficult to get to when it gets crowded. It has a fine range of real ales, including some from unusual breweries. There are 2 large leather sofas at the front of the pub but the rest of the seating is fairly basic. It is does a good range of food but I haven't tried any. The atmosphere is now completely changed and is well worth a visit.

Looked on this site for a post 'Chessington' pub for a decent meal. The food was excellent, not many pubs do homemade tartare sauce and handcut chips. We took my 6yr old and although this isn't a typical kids pub, he was made to feel very welcome and enjoyed his homemade pizza and chocolate and orange sponge very much, also the kinder egg that the barman produced for him at the end of his meal! A clean, friendly pub, excellent food and service, we will be back!

Finally a welcoming Pub with a community spirit. Bags( or barrels!) of lovely ales to fill the gap in Epsom left by the demise of "the Riser".Now four real ales and moving up,plus foreign bottles and draft.Food good ,and all very reasonably priced. Please dont become too popular!More power to the elbow.

What a change from the dobbin of old. The White Horse is a mustang in the pub dross of Epsom these days. The French barman makes it worth it alone and the manager is a lovely chap with some good ideas including beer tasting evenings with brewers ETC. The Riser dies but the horse gallops on!

Strangely this is my nearest pub and I hadn't been in here for something like 10 years. After reading good reviews I thought it was worth a visit and there was no disappointment. OSH which I assume is the regular and three rugby themed ales: Caledonian Try'd and Tested, Bateman's Hooker and Brains Bread of Heaven. Also Leffe and Hoegaarden and bottles of Belle Vue Kriek. Clan and spacious with promises of a beer festival in May. Only minor gripe is that it is a little too "nice".

Glad to have rediscovered it.

A very pleasant surprise a pub in Surrey where the ale is 2.50 a pint (with a note on the wall apologising for the recent price rise!) and served in dimple mugs! Lovely. 4 ales on the go (OSH; Caledonian Tried and Tested; Titanic Steerage and Batemans Hooker). Pub also runs an ale connoisseurs club, nice touch!

Ticks a lot of other boxes. Big screen TVs for sport and good food available slightly posher pub food than usual but still fairly affordable served well and tasted nice. Service was friendly, beer garden a bit of a sun-trap and well fenced for the kids.

Enjoyed my visit, would like to get back here soon. Proof of what can be done with inventive management and a bit of effort.

What a great pub. Nice to see a good traditional pub that stands by traditional family values. The staff and management are friendly and helpful especially good for those with a family. Great to see a family running the place. Keep up the great work guys. definately the best pub in Epsom

We went to this pub after finding it on this site and now happily give it 10 marks:

FOOD 2/3: Exquisite. Small menu, caters to varied preferences and extremely well prepared. All produce is from local farms apparently, which just adds to the appeal. Camembert fondue thoroughly recommended. Note that prices are gastro-pub, rather than traditional, but that can be forgiven considering quality. Still 1 point off, though.

LOCATION 1/1: Although on a busy road, the garden is behind so the noise cannot be heard. There is a fenced children playground. Tables are nicely spaced out so there is privacy.

SERVICE 3/3: The drinks are actually brought to you if you want. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

DRINK 3/3: Some real ales, some imported lagers and some white beers. Wine list also has a good selection.

There is also live music at weekends, which earnt it the bonus point.

Wow what a change this place has had!!! You can now enter this public house with out beady eyes following you everywhere making you feel uncomfortable, and no more worrying when the next fight will break out the new guys running the place are polite and extreamly friendly. They have made the pub non smoking already which is a big plus for me and the new menu is great. Finaly i can recomend my local to friends and family.

Visited the White Horse for the first time last night. Much nicer inside than it looks from the outside. Good garden with patio heaters if required. Very friendly and helpful barmaid and other staff were equally welcoming. Serve a good pint of London Pride. Would happily use it as my local if I lived a little closer.

Smallish pub on the main Epsom to Ashtead road by Epsom Hospital.

Has some space-management issues that need to be addressed by the management, as the current layout is only good for lonely drinkers and loved-up couples.

Friendly atmosphere though, worth a try.
