Cleveland, Brightonback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
The place has gone downhill generally over the past couple of years. I hate to see bar staff staring at their mobile phones all evening and this is exactly what they are doing all the time.

Well, we've tried out the food this week (March 2012) and sad to say it's not too good. The chef is probably overstretched or underappreciated by the management - whatever the reason it's just not very good. Long waits, poor quality ingredients, unimaginative and generally sub-standard. Bar is still great and the bar staff are wonderful as always tho!

Previous poster is right, thank goodness! It's not a flash pub and is a bit scruffy around the edges. The once-fab chef has gone, but has been replaced by a new one recently so it's probably a good time to try the food again.... and to be honest as long as it's edible, clean and hot I don't mind - it's just my local. The barmaids are mostly PhD students, but will talk to anyone! Some nights it's almost empty, then another it's buzzing with locals eating at every table, sometimes just a few blokes sitting chewing the fat. On a sunny afteroon/evening it's rammed with families, kids popping back and forth from the park opposite, and tennis teams on post-match coolers. All-in-all it's just a local, something that's hard to find in uber-trendy Brighton. Long live the madness of the Cleveland! Oh and the beer's not bad; Harvey's, London Pride and some of that Belgian stuff.

Well, this was going to be the place to eat tonight, based on the reviews below. No idea what's happened, guessing the amazing caring chef is no longer there. Please correct me if I'm wrong though. We went somewhere else and wondered up here for a beer. Old smelly stuffy place with 5 people in on a Saturday night. Heart FM on the stereo. Toilets are ok, toilet roll holder in the mens was all open and hanging down. Whole place on its last legs, which based on reviews is v sad. Anyway, stayed for one and left quickly.

Lived in the area for 25 years, had 4 local pubs in walking distance to choose from, overall this is still my favourite, even though its not the nearest. A fine traditional corner house, plenty of room to sit, not too noisy, with benches outside for a fine summer evening.

C'mon guys....could do alot better with the ale selections....food tip top though

How I envy those lucky enough to have this little gem as their local. The beer is as fine a pint as you will find anywhere in the City, the food is ruddy marvellous, the staff a delight to be served by, and the locals as an eclectic mix as Brighton can deliver.
A great place to go wtih good friends if you want to sit and talk and while away the hours.

My local pub, so I'm probably biased, but having tried the others in the area, this is by far the best. Good atmosphere, very friendly bar-staff plus a chef in the kitchen who can work wonders, and certainly does care about food (The food is so fresh that it is not unusual to see unplucked pheasant, or freshly caught fish brought in, and put on the menu forthwith), plus the best belly pork I have ever tasted. The clientele is certainly civilised, and very eclectic (the regulars include a roofer, an opera singer, a carpenter, a film director, a ski instructor, a nurse, a magician, and more than one artist! The main occupation within the pub however, is conversation. Good food, good beer, good company - say no more!

Fab pub. Excellent 'real' food. We only had two sandwiches and I was bowled over. Someone in the kitchen really cares about food. Real hand carved ham from a joint and a fantastic cheddar on a really lovely artisan bread, plus a Haloumi sandwich that was also excellent. Nice local ales too. Staff are really friendly and accomodating as are the few local people who were at the bar when I was ordering. Never been there in my life before but it felt like home. There's a lovely little dining area at the back and the TV is mercifully in it's own little room too so not intrusive.
My only minor criticism would be with the interior of the main bar, which is a bit dated and has a weird layout gives a feeling a bit like a bunker. Obscured glass at the lower windows and blinds half closed makes it feel a little oppressive as do solid 'closed' doors especially to the front. Clear glass and glazed doors would connect it with the splendid outside view and make it lighter and maybe a little more inviting as would returning the rest of the interior to nearer original period. hard to fault it otherwise though, a welcome surprise.

A good small traditional street corner pub. Nice beer ( good Harveys) and very cheerful staff, who dont get flustered when its busy. A bit cliquey and not much space. Park opposite, so take the kids and watch them from the patio. Dogs ok.

Quality beer and nice outdoor drinking area overlooking park. Easily the best pub in the locality.

Good real ales, and well kept. Nice fire in the grate and thankfully, a civilized clientele - unlike some other pubs in the area.

A fairly basic, but perfectly acceptable locals' pub. As a real ale fan, I have to say that they really do keep their beers in top-notch condition, and that's the main reason to come here. Decor-wise, the pub has just been given a lick of paint, which has helped.
