Country pub that was doing a roaring trade with both drinkers and diners on our Sunday evening visit. Being hungry, we decided to eat. The food was just what the doctor ordered, despite me not getting exactly what I'd asked and paid for. But, it was too busy to complain about the lack of a pineapple ring!! The pub has plenty of character, with real fires creating a cosy atmosphere. There are also tables outside and a beer garden with a children's playground over the road, next to the car park. Ales were Butcombe Original, Rare Breed & Hot Air. Ciders were Weston's Rosie's Pig, Hand Brake & Flat Tyre & Harry's Haymaker. A really nice pub.

HenPen is quite right, I was pleased to see that this house is indeed alive and kicking. I had indeed been told a rumour which really related to the New Inn

The report of this pub closing is nonsense; it is the New Inn that has gone (with all the fittings due to be sold off by public auction this weekend). This seems in healthy shape (or, it did today, when I made a special out of the way trip to see it the report of closing was true). It has always been a pleasure to visit here. Excellent.

Reported by their suppliers to be closed. Apparently it is doomed to become an executive residence.

What a pleasure to have a good Landlord in the Queen Vic at last! Mark has turned this pub right around its buzzing, popular and clean. I have been using this pub for at least 25 years and for the first time, the loos are clean and smell fresh. The food is spot on and reasonably priced. I cant comment on the beer, but the cider is great and there is a good selection of wine. Very popular with locals and people from surrounding villages. Great food, fabulous atmosphere, friendly staff and top Landlord. Highly recommended!

Went to lunch yesterday. What a find! The english country pub we all dream of!
Good food and excellent beer. Recommend the Priddy ham.
Very friendly staff and locals (at least on a Wednesday when the previous landlandy runs the bar - can speak for other days).
Bags of oldy-worldy atmosphere too. CAMRA recommended 2012 but dont believe the 'Free House' sign outside - its a Butcombe pub.

Went today, the day of the annual sheep fair. The pub was full as to be expected and they were only serving with plastic glasses (yuk)
Anyway as a cider head i saw my favorite Thatchers Cheddar Valley and asked for a pint (2.50) The cider from the barrel looked ok but was completely watery not like i get from Tuckers or the Fox and Badger. My mate hugh had one as well from a new!!! barrel and it was the same. I don't think Thatchers would water down their own cider and nor would Butcombe, so i suspect the Landlord after a quick buck from the unsuspecting visitors. Anyway we went straight off to the Hunters lodge for a fantastic pint of Wilkins cider.
Gave it 2 for location , but never go on the sheep fair, you have been warned.

The couple who had run it for a while and made a better job than anyone for a while have fallen out with Butcombe and gone.

I am reminded of Oscar Wilde, to lose one landlord quickly is unfortunate, to lose several seems like carelessness. Butcombe really must get a grip here, it is a good pub that could be great.

Still not as clean as it should be.

Rumours that an experienced Burcombe landlord-"Mark" who used to run the Swan at Roberrow is to take over in a week or so. Let us hope he really cleans it up and gives some consistency.

Under temporrary management last three weeks beer has been ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.

It's now a free house (or at least so the sign says). Yes, the upholstery is improved and yes, the beer is good and well-kept. Didn't try the food this time, though. Still streets ahead of the New Inn. I'll stick by my previous 7/10.

What a change! New couple imported by Butcombe Brewery to manage have got a grip on cleanliness, even the seat cushions! Why has this taken so long?

Beer consistently excellent now. Butcome Bitter is 2-80, (standard it seems across the estate). Always a nice fire burning.

At last a decent second beer on instead of the rubbish, Fullers London Pride.. This is popular in other Butcombe pubs. If we are going to have a guest beer can it please be one like this that people will want to drink? Are you listening Butcombe?

Food not tested yet but a passing steak looked excellent

This is a Butcombe Brewery owned pub with a character interior and (naturally) good beer. The interior is truly filthy, frankly a disgrace to Butcombe and they need to do something about it. Check out those removable (but absolutely filthy) seat cushions, the dirty windows. This is not character, this is wilful mismanagement and neglect. The beer is good! The open fires and interior COULD be great. A real tragedy. I have never been brave enough to eat here.

This was my pub of choice today, although still olde worlde, it's in need of a good clean. Locals and barmaid still as friendly and, ale in fine fettle. But, that's it then, we ordered the Priddy burger and the Butcombe ale pie with new pots. At 8-95 for the pie albeit i could smell the ale in it, I expect to get the pots I ordered and, not saute and a Dam sight more veg than just a large spoon of peas. The priddy burger must have just sneezed at the stilton topping and, no side relish appeared. The chips were of differing shades of brown, the salad was grossly over oiled and the only local thing on both plates I would say were the meats. ? Poor presentation all round. Lets face it a nice place to go for a drink but, that's it

Attractive pub in the centre of the village with a useful outside seating area. Quite large, with a stone built central fire place in the middle of the main bar, and a few rooms off that are more geared up for eating.

Reasonable looking menu, and a pleasant and friendly barmaid. They do a meat raffle on a Friday and have acoustic nights on a Monday. All in all a very decent hostelry.

Beers on this occasion were Butcombe, Butcombe Gold and Tribute. Ciders were Ashton Press, Thatchers Traditional and Cheddar Valley.

Visited the other week after a gap of 20 odd years. Nice to see the place unchanged. The menu may not appear to be very adventuous, but it is to a very high standard. Beer was very well kept. The better of the two in the village.

Beer quality was ok, and it was quite busy but decor was "horse brassy" and emphasis was on food. Hunter's Lodge is far more to my taste.

A good Pub welcoming locals and strangers alike. Full butcombe range and one guest beer is served as well as the ubiquitous and violently orange Cheddar Valley cider. The logos and badges of various Caving clubs are shown above the Bar and the food is good.

Lovely pub, particularly if you like Butcombe beer. Nice atmosphere.
Darren_in_the_City - 8 Sep 2009 14:04
The better of the two pubs in the centre of Priddy. Good beer and the Beef & Butcombe pie was really most satisfactory.
BinBagBob - 13 Jul 2009 09:17
Maintains a rural pub character and has a couple of well kept ales. Didn't try the food, but the menu looked nothing out of the ordinary. Very pleasant garden and overspill area.

good beers; on a walking trip from Wells to Cheddar a great pit stop - pub served lunch for 16 (plenty of outdoor tables) at 2pm on a Saturday. Great setting.

While searching for the nearby Hunters Lodge, I stumbled across this little gem, which although very different from the aforementioned competitor, is a distinctly different experience, and both have merit for different reasons.
Unlike the Lodge which is pared-down, no-nonsense rusticity, the QVI specialises in a more typical, but indulgent rural pub experience. If you are an appreciator of classic country pubs that are warm, welcoming, serving substantial meals, and are full of beams, assorted horse-brasses, breweriana etc then this is for you. On a chilly Autumn day with the log fire roaring (pictured above - I was lucky enough to get a seat right next to it), it is like being given a big comforting hug! Even before entering the smell of the wood burning is immediately evocative of cosy evenings in in friendly surroudings.
Both landlord and punters were very friendly and didn't mind being asked the way to the Hunters. Enjoyed a quick half of the Butcombe Bitter and it was on form. I can't comment on whether this place has lost some magic since their takeover, but it seemed to be making a pretty good fist of things to me. Recommended.

This was one of my favourite pubs a while back. I don't come quite so much any more, but still manage about once a month. I agree that it isn't quite as good since it has been taken over, but it is still a very good place to stop for a pint. Mind you, when I am here I only drink the Thatchers Cheddar Valley cider now and haven't tried the Butcombe choices.
HenPen - 17 Aug 2008 21:35
cold wet day, was welcomed by a smile and two log fires. once we made our way through the crowd of locals at the bar, the service was friendly and quick. food was excellent; home cooked and cheap. the burgers are among the best you will find!

The pub was aquired by Butcombe brewery back in July and unfortunately has lost some of it's charm since. Small changes serve to give a more commercial feel and some of the local atmosphere has dissapeared. I hope they stop short of turning this gem into yet another generic "food" pub, with little room for drinkers and locals.
ciderdrinker1 - 20 Nov 2006 16:12
Some recent minor enhancements have only served to improve this wonderful pub whilst maintaining its charactor. Home-cooked food is superb quality & value, and the ales are well kept. Dogs are allowed which I dont agree with in a pub.
6x_in_the_daytimes - 7 Nov 2006 17:40
This pub has been in the hands of new owners for a little over two years. The home cooked food is excellent and there is a wide choice of well kept beers and three ciders. The welcome is always as warm as the three open fires and there are enough pub games to keep the most harden pub olympians happy. Bar Billards, Shove Ha'penny and Darts are all available. Prices are now some of the lowest in the area meaning all in all the pub is hard to beat.
ciderdrinker1 - 16 Feb 2006 14:04
Nice wide range of ales and a couple of ciders.
beersponge - 31 Jul 2005 13:51
Has recently changed hands, and the new owner is now making great improvements. Beer (6X and other Wadworths) is much better (locals are drinking it now), and food is exceptional and great value.

nice old place, pricy food but good food and great ales.
